Iatrogenic nerve injury and foot drop: Surgical results in 28 patients.

BACKGROUND: Most peroneal nerve injuries resulting in foot drop are secondary to trauma or iatrogenic. Foot drop can occur due to potential complications from the hip, lumbosacral spine, and knee surgeries, which are critical to diagnose and manage. METHODS: We reviewed our foot drop patients' data to determine the incidence and iatrogenic causes of the injury and managed surgically by neurolysis of the peroneal nerve and transfer of functional fascicles of either the superficial peroneal or the tibial nerve to the deep peroneal nerve. RESULTS: We found 28 iatrogenic foot drop patients who h

Acute foot and ankle injuries and time return to sport.

Foot and ankle sports injuries encompass a wide spectrum of conditions from simple contusions or sprains that resolve within days to more severe injuries that change the trajectory of an athlete's sporting career. If missed, severe injuries could lead to prolonged absence from the sport and therefore a catastrophic impact on future performance. In this article, we discuss the presentation of the commonest foot and ankle sports injuries and share recent evidence to support an accurate diagnosis and best management practice.

Surgical Treatment Using Sinus Tarsi Approach with Anterolateral Fragment Open-Door Technique in Sanders Type 3 and 4 Displaced Intraarticular Calcaneal Fracture.

Although various outcomes of the sinus tarsi approach have been reported, these are limited to the Sanders type 2 displaced intraarticular calcaneal fractures (DIACF) because of the limited visibility of the posterior facet joint. In this study we aimed to (1) introduce a sinus tarsi approach combined with an anterolateral fragment open-door technique that enables adequate visibility of the innermost and middle portion of the posterior facet joint, and (2) evaluate the radiographic and clinical outcomes of the patients treated with that technique. This is a retrospective case-series study perf

Operative Ankle Fractures in Complicated Diabetes: Outcomes of Prolonged Non-Weightbearing.

Diabetes increases the risk of developing postoperative complications such as superficial and deep infection, wound dehiscence, and revisional surgery. Prolonged non-weightbearing and/or augmented fixation may reduce postoperative complications in complicated diabetic ankle fractures. This study's purpose was to compare the development of postoperative infection, wound dehiscence, and revisional surgery in complicated diabetic ankle fractures with respect to weightbearing status. We hypothesized that fewer complications would occur in patients with prolonged non-weightbearing. Medical records

Deep Inferior Epigastric Flap Combined Bilateral-Anterolateral Thigh Flap for the Coverage of Both Lower Extremity Soft-Tissue Defect: A Case Report and a Literature Review.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Anterolateral thigh perforator (ALTP) flap and deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap have been advantageous over traditional myocutaneous flaps as they preserve the integrity of donor site muscles and minimize the damage and complication to donor site structures. Here, we reported the efficacy of free ALTP and DIEP in the repair of large skin area and soft tissue defects on both lower limbs after trauma. CASE REPORT: A 19-year-old female traffic accident victim presented with multiple open bilateral fractures to the lower extremities with joint dislocation, massi
