Epidemiology of Pediatric Lower-Extremity Injuries in the 5 Most Popular US Sports: A 10-Year Analysis of National Injury Data (2015-2024).

BACKGROUND: Sports injuries are a leading cause of pediatric emergency department (ED) visits in the United States (US), accounting for approximately 20% of all injury-related visits, with 41% requiring operation. Football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and ice hockey are the 5 most popular US sports by viewership and participation, and pose a high risk of lower-extremity orthopedic injury. Despite increasing youth participation, previous studies have focused on a single sport or diagnosis, leaving limited population-level data to compare injury patterns across sports and sexes. PURPOSE: This

Exposure-adjusted injury incidence and the impact of surveillance definitions in handball: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.

Handball carries a substantial injury burden, though reported incidence varies. This systematic review and meta-analysis quantified exposure-adjusted injury incidence in handball by synthesizing prospective cohort studies. Sixteen studies (11,049 players) were included. The pooled overall injury incidence was 5.05 per 1,000 hours; however, substantial heterogeneity was observed and prediction intervals were wide. Match incidence was significantly higher than training incidence, and contact injuries exceeded non-contact injuries. Notably, the difference between non-time-loss and time-loss injur

Hemorrhagic Cholecystitis in an Elderly Patient With Fall Syndrome: A Case Report.

Hemorrhagic cholecystitis is a rare, potentially fatal complication of acute cholecystitis that develops with or without gallstones. It tends to be diagnosed late because its clinical presentation overlaps with that of other acute abdominal conditions, and suspicion is often low, as it is first a ruling-out diagnosis due to its low incidence. We present the case of an 81-year-old man with epilepsy, heavy tobacco use, and alcohol consumption, who ambulated with crutches due to a previous left ankle fracture. He was admitted following a ground-level fall caused by a tonic-clonic seizure, sustain

Sports injuries in the emergency department: an observational study with a gender perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Sports injuries are a significant concern in emergency departments and affect both amateur and professional athletes. With the increase in women's participation in sports, it is crucial to understand sex-specific injury characteristics, as patterns observed in men may not apply to women. This observational, descriptive and retrospective study aims to analyze sex differences in sports injuries to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies. Our hypothesis is that sports injury patterns differ between sexes. METHODS: Patients treated for sports injuries between 2020 an

Imaging Findings in Acute Ankle Sprain and Syndesmosis Injury.

Acute ankle sprain including distal tibiofibular syndesmosis injury is the most common lower limb sports injury. In the athletic population, imaging with magnetic resonance imaging plays an important role in the grading of acute ankle sprain but crucially also in the detection of associated injuries, such as bone contusion, osteochondral lesions, fracture, and tendon injury. Accurate diagnosis in the acute phase of injury facilitates surgical decision making, appropriate rehabilitation, and prediction of return-to-play time. This review article examines the medial ligament complex, the lateral

Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation at alternating intensities preferentially prevents the development of spasticity after contusion SCI in rat.

Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) has become an increasingly popular and effective research intervention for functional recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI). Despite its surge in application for clinical investigations, there is a current lack of systematic approaches to investigate the optimal design of electrical stimulation protocols for a desired outcome. Important parameters that can affect the outcome are stimulation frequency and intensity. Previous work in humans and rodents have identified tSCS as a promising strategy to reduce spasticity and hyperreflexia after SCI. Ho
