Severe injuries in football players. Influencing factors.

The aims of this prospective study were to analyze factors related to the occurrence of severe football injuries in players of different ages (14 to 42 years) and different skill levels (local teams to first league teams). In the Czech Republic, 398 players were followed up for 1 year, during which time they sustained 686 injuries. Of these, 113 (16.5%) were severe injuries. Ninety-seven severe injuries (86%) were able to be documented in detail. Trauma was the cause of 81.5% of the injuries and overuse was the cause of 18.5%. Joint sprains predominated (30%), followed by fractures (16%), musc

Injury toll following the 1997 Maccabiah Games bridge collapse: implications of major disasters for sports medicine teams.

A major disaster was encountered at the 1997 Maccabiah Games in Israel. As the Australian team was about to enter the main stadium for the opening ceremony, a pedestrian bridge they were crossing collapsed, killing 4 athletes and injuring many others. The aim of this paper is to establish the rates, types and anatomical locations of musculoskeletal injuries incurred by members of the Australian Maccabiah Games team, with particular reference to the impact of the bridge collapse. In total, the 410 members of the team (360 athletes and coaches and 50 team officials) reported 166 injuries from th

From the RSNA Refresher Courses. Radiological Society of North America. MR imaging of the ankle and foot.

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has opened new horizons in the diagnosis and treatment of many musculoskeletal diseases of the ankle and foot. It demonstrates abnormalities in the bones and soft tissues before they become evident at other imaging modalities. The exquisite soft-tissue contrast resolution, noninvasive nature, and multiplanar capabilities of MR imaging make it especially valuable for the detection and assessment of a variety of soft-tissue disorders of the ligaments (eg, sprain), tendons (tendinosis, peritendinosis, tenosynovitis, entrapment, rupture, dislocation), and other soft

Injuries of the foot and ankle in occupational medicine: a 1-year study.

With occupational injuries, both the employee and employer are impaired by monetary or physical damages. Administrative and clinical data can assist in identifying risks for these injuries. While musculoskeletal injuries are well known, foot and ankle injuries are not as frequently described as back and hand injuries. Changes in the workplace may then be implemented dependent on the risk factors identified. A retrospective study was completed on all foot and ankle injuries that were reported to the Oakwood Hospital Downriver Center Occupational Medicine Clinics over 1 year. Of 3851 new injurie

Typical homicide ritual of the Italian Mafia (incaprettamento).

Certain methods of homicide used by the Italian Mafia are intended to have an admonitory significance. One such method is the so-called "incaprettamento." This study analyzes 18 cases of homicidal ligature strangulation in which the body was found in this typical position. The circumstances of the crime and the macroscopic and microscopic evidence were evaluated to determine whether or not the ligatures on the wrists and ankles were placed antemortem or postmortem.

The snowboarder's foot and ankle.

We undertook a prospective study to determine the type and distribution of foot and ankle snowboarding injuries. Reports of 3213 snowboarding injuries were collected from 12 Colorado ski resorts between 1988 and 1995. Of these, 491 (15.3%) were ankle injuries and 58 (1.8%) were foot injuries. Ankle injuries included 216 (44%) fractures and 255 (52%) sprains. Thirty-three (57%) of the foot injuries were fractures and 16 (28%) were sprains. The remaining injuries were soft tissue injuries, contusions, or abrasions. There was no significant correlation between boot type (soft, hybrid, or hard) an

Incidence and clinical significance of bone bruises after supination injury of the ankle. A double-blind, prospective study.

We used MRI to study a prospective series of 95 patients with inversion injuries of the ankle and no fracture on plain radiographs. We found an incidence of bone bruises of 27%, but these made no difference to the time of return to work, limitation of walking or physical activity, or the clinical outcome scores at three months. We conclude that bone bruises have very little clinical significance after inversion injuries of the ankle.

[Chondral and osteochondral lesions of the upper ankle joint. Clinical aspects, diagnosis and therapy].

Chondral and osteochondral lesions as well as bone bruises of the ankle are caused in the most cases by trauma and are localized almost exclusively at the talus. For diagnosis, operative management and follow up, magnetic resonance imaging was useful, which can be further improved by application of intravenous or intraarticullar contrast enhancement (Gadolinium). In adults operative therapy is favored. Due to new techniques, arthroscopy became an important alternative to arthrotomy. According to the stage of the disease, drilling or curettage, removal or fixation of the fragment, autologous bo

Injuries in collegiate wrestling.

We evaluated the data of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Injury Surveillance System on collegiate wrestling with a focus on musculoskeletal injuries. Over 800,000 athlete-exposures during an 11-year period compose these data. Findings particular to wrestling and a comparison with other collegiate sports are included. Collegiate wrestling had a relatively high rate of injury at 9.6 injuries per 1000 athlete-exposures. It was second to spring football in total injury rate. Most injuries in this study were not serious, with 6.3% resulting in surgery and 37.6% resulting in a week or m

Occult osseous injuries after ankle sprains: incidence, location, pattern, and age.

We retrospectively evaluated 109 magnetic resonance studies in patients with prior ankle sprains to investigate the frequency and pattern of bone bruises. Patterns of bone bruises were then correlated with the ligaments injured. In addition, the age of the injury was determined from medical records to correlate the presence of bone bruises with the temporal period from injury. Bone bruises occurred in 39% of ankle sprains. Multiple bone bruises were seen in 40% of those with bone bruises; they occurred more frequently in patients with multiple ligaments injured. The marrow changes may be secon
