A survey of injuries sustained in the game of touch.

Three hundred and forty-five Touch football players were retrospectively surveyed to determine the nature and incidence of injuries sustained over a one year period. The definition of injury was that it prevented playing or training for at least one week. A total of 177 injuries were sustained by 117 players who participated in a total of 1043 hours of playing and training each week. The injury rate was 4.85/1000 hours of playing or training which was less than in other football codes. This rate was significantly more (p < 0.05) among males and no relationship was evident based on representati

Common sports injuries in young tennis players.

Tennis is a popular racquet sport played by boys, girls, men and women. Tennis players frequently begin playing in childhood and may continue playing into late adulthood. Preadolescent and adolescent players have open growth plates and a reduced muscle power, lower level of coordination and smaller stature compared with adult players. The physical characteristics of the young tennis player mean that unique demands are placed on the developing athlete which can, in turn, be associated with different types and patterns of injury. The most common types of injury in tennis players of all ages are

[Trendy inline skating sports. Pattern of injuries and groups at risk].

One hundred and eighty-two patients presented with 200 inline-skating injuries over a 30-month period. Of these, 14% were admitted to hospital, 10% required operative treatment. Fractures (49%), contusions/lacerations (27%) and capsular/ligamentuous injuries (16%) were the most prevalent types of injury. Children had an even higher risk of sustaining fractures (62%). Falling on the extended arm caused 44% of all injuries. Thirteen percent resulted from torque mechanisms of the leg, whereas direct trauma to elbow or knee (5% each) were uncommon injury mechanisms. Injuries of the elbow, forearm,

Skiing injuries in children, adolescents, and adults.

We prospectively gathered data on skiing injuries that had been sustained at the Sugarbush North ski area since 1972 and at the Sugarbush South ski area since 1981. The purpose of the current study was to document the overall rates of injury in children, adolescents, and adults participating in alpine skiing. We also sought to determine the ten most common injuries in each age-group. Finally, we analyzed short-term and long-term trends to determine if changes in equipment had had an effect on the frequency or pattern of injury. From the 1981-1982 to the 1993-1994 season, there were 2.79 injuri

Common soccer injuries. Diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.

Soccer is a game with worldwide appeal. Increasing numbers of participants are members of all age groups and skill levels. The game presents to the sports medicine practitioner a wide variety of musculoskeletal and medical problems. Soccer injuries increase in frequency as the age of participant increases, with a low incidence of injury in preadolescent players. Musculoskeletal injuries most commonly affect the lower extremities and include contusions, acute and chronic musculotendinous strains, and ligamentous injuries to the knee and ankle. Most injuries are minor and respond to analgesics,

Bone bruises detected by magnetic resonance imaging following lateral ankle sprains.

Although bone bruises have been well described in the knee joint, little is known about their presence in the ankle joint. The present study attempted to document the association of bone bruises with lateral ankle sprains. Magnetic resonance (MR) images were obtained from 60 consecutive patients with lateral ankle sprains between April 1994 and June 1995. There were 29 men and 31 women, aged on average 25 years (range 12-68 years). All of the patients presented within 3 weeks of the sprain. MRI examinations were done within 3 weeks of the injury in 15, after 3-6 weeks in 21, and after 6-8 week

Injuries in military parachuting: a prospective study of 4499 jumps.

In this prospective study, the parachuting injuries which occurred during 2031 jumps in basic courses of free fall were compared with the injuries occurring during 2468 jumps for reserve paratroopers on training exercises. Fifty-eight injuries were recorded in 51 paratroopers. The ankle was most commonly affected, and 80 per cent of the injuries involved the lower extremity. Only 14 per cent of the injured troopers suffered severe injuries (fractures, knee ligament ruptures). The injury rate for paratroopers on basic courses (19.7 injuries per 1000 jumps) was significantly higher (P < 0.0001)

The treatment of acute soft tissue trauma in Danish emergency rooms.

Rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE) is the most recommended treatment for acute traumatic soft tissue injuries. A questionnaire was given to all Danish emergency rooms (n = 5) regarding their routines for acute treatment of ankle sprains and muscle contusions. Complete answers were received from 37 emergency rooms (73%), covering the treatment of 111 ankle sprains and 101 muscle contusions. Treatment with RICE was given in a minority of injuries, ice (21%), compression (32%) and elevation (58%) similarly between injury types. A complete RICE treatment was rarely applied (3%). Study of aeroball injuries.

OBJECTIVE: To present the risks of aeroball, a new sport played by either two or four players on a trampoline court surrounded by specially constructed fabric walls, and to propose ways to increase awareness and reduce the incidence of injury, in particular, ankle injury. METHOD: A study was carried out to document the nature of aeroball related incidents, between 1991 and 1995, at Lancaster University Sports Centre. Lace-up ankle supports were introduced in April 1992, and their effect on the incidence of ankle injury was recorded. RESULTS: The lower limb received most injuries (90%), follo

Surveillance of work-related musculoskeletal injuries among union carpenters.

Combined data sources, including union administrative records and workers' compensation claims, were used to construct event histories for a dynamic cohort of union carpenters from Washington State during the period 1989-1992. Person-time at risk and the events of interest were stratified by age, sex, time in the union, and predominant type of carpentry work. Poisson regression techniques were used to identify subgroups at greatest risk of filing claims for a variety of musculoskeletal disorders defined by ANSI codes for body part injured and injury nature. Distinguishing different kinds of mu

Differences in the incidence of injury between rugby league forwards and backs.

Evidence with regard to the incidence of injury to forwards and backs in the game of rugby league is extremely limited. A four year prospective study of all the injuries from one professional Rugby League club was conducted. All injuries that were received during match play were recorded, and those for forwards and backs compared. Forwards had a higher overall rates of injury than backs (139.4 [124.2-154.6] vs. 92.7 [80.9-104.6] per 1000 player hours, P < 0.00006). Forwards had a higher rate of injuries to all body sites with the exception of the ankle and the 'others' category of injury. They

Sports injuries in children and adolescents treated at a sports injury clinic.

This study presents the results of a three-year (1989-1991) retrospective survey of sports injuries to children and adolescents (5-17 years of age) treated at a sports injuries clinic (Crystal Palace, London). Of the total of 394 injuries, 178 (45.2%) were to females and 216 (54.8%) were to males. In both females and males the frequency of injuries showed a unimodal relationship with increasing age; the peak frequency in females occurred at age 13-14 years and in males at age 15-16 years. Fifty per cent of the injuries (197) were acute, 49.5% (195) were chronic and 0.5% (2) were inconclusive i

Incidence of injury in Texas girls' high school basketball.

We studied the incidence of injury in girl's varsity basketball to characterize injury demographics in high school athletics. We defined a reportable injury as one that occurred during organized practice or competition, resulted in either missed practice or game time, required physician consultation, or involved the head or face. We prospectively evaluated the athletes on team rosters during the 1993 to 1994 season from 100 randomly selected Class 4A and 5A Texas public high schools that employed full-time certified athletic trainers. The 890 student athletes from 80 schools ranged in age from
