The study involves 421 patients who had suffered injury while playing handball. It describes mechanism and trauma, the injuries and their consequences, and data on training and technical conditions. 2/3 of the injured were female and one half belonged to the younger age-classes. The incidence of injury was highest among senior players. Distortion was the most frequent type of injury, followed by contusions and fractures. In November 1982, epidemiologic data were collected in a unique, large scale, population-based survey on sports injuries in school-aged children living in Holland. A total of 7,468 pupils, aged 8 to 17, completed questionnaires covering a retrospective period of 6 weeks. A retrospective survey of 267 snowboarders was undertaken to determine the population at risk and types and mechanisms of injuries sustained in this sport. Snowboarders are young (average age, 21 years), male (greater than 90%), view themselves in average or above average physical condition (96%), and have varied sports interests. One hundred ten injuries that resulted in a physician visit were reported. Ligament sprains, fractures, and contusions were the most frequent types of injury. Fifty percent of all injuries occurred in the lower extremities, with ankle injuries being the most common.

A prospective study of injuries encountered during participation in a summer soccer camp for youths aged 6 through 17 years revealed an injury incidence of 10.6 per 1000 hours for girls (107 injuries in 458 girls) and 7.3 per 1000 hours for boys (109 injuries in 681 boys). Ankle pain can be disabling for the geriatric patient. Unlike symptoms in younger individuals, symptoms in the elderly are often insidious in onset and result from chronic disease processes. Acute injuries, when they occur, are often managed differently than in younger patients. Accurate diagnosis is essential for appropriate treatment. An anatomic approach to diagnosis is presented along with guidelines for appropriate conservative and surgical treatment.

A one-year prospective follow-up study of all patients visiting Tampere Research Station of Sports Medicine (TRSSM) was carried out in order to determine the specific features of women's sports injuries compared to those of men. A prospective study of women's flag football injuries was carried out over a 4 year period at Mississippi State University. Data was gathered on 114 injuries. Organized intramural flag football activities caused 93% of the injuries observed (7% were injured in pick-up games). The finger accounted for 39%, knee for 16%, and ankle for 8% of these injuries. In a one-year prospective study of 42 elite orienteers, 73 recent injuries (1.7 per runner per year) were found. Acute injuries totalled 52% and 48% were due to overuse. The clinical features of 311 patients with apparently sprained ankles were analysed and compared with radiographs. Measurable swelling was found to be a constant feature of ankle fractures and bruising was very common. The incidence of fractures increased with age. No other physical sign nor the history was useful in predicting fracture in this context. It is concluded that advanced age, bruising and particularly swelling are strong indications for ankle radiography and the absence of swelling is a strong contraindication.

During a soccer tournament with participation of 6,600 boys and girls (9-19 years) all injuries were evaluated, 5.2% of the players were injured; out of these 51% had "slight injuries", 42% "moderate injuries" and 7% "severe injuries". All sport injuries treated at the Emergency Department, Ullevål Hospital in Oslo (OKL) were registered for one year. They accounted for 6.3% of the total number of patients treated at OKL in that period. 4673 patients were seen; 3292 males and 1381 females. In brief: The authors analyzed 1,877 high school football injuries to determine differences between game and practice injuries. The results indicate that games are more dangerous per time unit of exposure than practice. Significantly more contusions, especially to the trunk, occurred during games, and strains occurred more frequently during practice. To investigate high school football injuries, we analyzed 1,877 injuries (661 game, 1,216 practice) treated from 1976 through 1979 at the Sports Medicine Clinic at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. The common injury types were sprain (32.2%), contusion (24.8%), strain (12.4%), fracture (11.0%), tear (3.8%), dislocation (2.1%), myositis ossificans (1.4%), tendinitis (1.3%), and concussion (1.0%). Position of the player injured was quarterback (8.7%), running back (19.6%), receiver (12.4%), offensive lineman (23.7%), defensive lineman (10.2%), defensive back (9.2%), and linebacker (9.0%).
