Injury differences between youth male and female American football players.

OBJECTIVES: American football continues to be a popular and rapidly growing sport among both males and females, with relatively little research concerning injuries for the latter - especially in the youth population. The current study aims to evaluate the differences in the epidemiology of injured body parts and injury diagnoses between youth male and female American football players. METHODS: Injury data for male and female American football players were collected over a 10- year period from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) and retrospectively reviewed. Patients bet

A Randomised Trial Comparing the Outcome of Expert Tibia Nailing and Plating for Distal Tibial Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Management of distal tibial fracture is challenging as it has precarious blood supply and its subcutaneous location. It is frequently complicated by contusion, infection, delayed union, and nonunion and may lead to revision surgeries. Distal tibial fracture needs a stable fixation with minimum damage to the soft tissues by the surgical dissection and implants. The optimal method of fixation remains debatable. Traditional methods like open reduction and rigid internal fixation have been associated with infections and devitalization of soft tissues and hence have poor results. AIMS

Distal Tibiofibular Syndesmosis Injuries in the National Football League (NFL): A Spectrum of Pathology That Correlates With Time to Return to Full Participation.

BACKGROUND: Studies routinely evaluate high ankle sprains in isolation, but recent data suggest that these injuries are often associated with concomitant pathology, potentially influencing return to full participation. HYPOTHESIS: In National Football League (NFL) players, isolated high ankle sprains are rare and syndesmosis injuries with concomitant pathology will result in increased time to return to full participation. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3. METHODS: Distal tibiofibular syndesmosis injuries sustained by NFL players between 2017 and 2019 were ide

Mechanisms and Trends in Women's Lacrosse Head and Musculoskeletal Injuries: A 15-Year Review of National Injury Data.

BACKGROUND: Head injury rates in lacrosse may be higher among women compared with men. Understanding these trends can guide appropriate injury prevention for female athletes. HYPOTHESES: Injuries most commonly involve the head, with no significant decline over the study period; contact with other players would be the most common injury mechanism. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiological. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was queried (January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2022) for women's lacrosse injuries presenting to United States

Foot and Ankle Injuries in Baseball.

Foot and ankle injuries in baseball provide unique challenges to the provider. Most foot and ankle injuries (ie, ankle sprains and contusions) can be managed non-operatively using a similar approach as in other athletic populations, but a few unique mechanisms of injury in baseball are important to be aware of. While upper extremity injuries such as ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tears and labral tears are extensively reported on in the literature, there is a need for further baseball-specific research on foot and ankle injuries, especially given the increasing prevalence of these injuries ov

Teclistamab impairs humoral immunity in patients with heavily pretreated myeloma: importance of immunoglobulin supplementation.

CONTEXT: Although the relationship between workload and injury incidence has recently gained attention, data on the acute-to-chronic workload ratio (ACWR) and injury incidence in Taekwondo remain unavailable. OBJECTIVE: To report the injury incidence related to the categorized ACWR, calculated using the rolling average (RA) and exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) methods, for musculoskeletal injuries in Taekwondo. DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiologic study. SETTING: Data were prospectively collected through Taekwondo training facilities and competition venues. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTI

Guideline-Based Telemedicine Assessment of Orthopedic Low-Risk Conditions by General Practitioners is Not Inferior to that of Face-to-Face Consultations with Specialists in the Emergency Department: A Randomized Trial.

Background: There is a lack of randomized controlled trials focusing on orthopedic telemedicine (TM). The objective of this research was to compare the diagnostic accuracy and pattern of TM consultations of low-risk orthopedic patients performed by general practitioners (GPs) with those of face-to-face evaluations by orthopedists at an emergency department (ED). Methods: This randomized, single-center study was conducted between October 2021 and November 2022 on patients at an ED. Inclusion criteria were age >18 years, low back pain, extremity contusion, ankle sprain, or neck pain. Eligible pa

Age and Sex Comparisons in Pediatric Track and Field Hurdle Injuries Seen in Emergency Departments of the US.

There is limited literature analyzing pediatric hurdle injuries based on sex and age. This study compares hurdle-related injury types, injured body parts, and injury mechanisms by age and sex in pediatrics. Hurdle-related injury data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System were used to retrospectively review the injuries of hurdlers 18 years and under. Differences in injured body parts, injury types, and mechanisms were analyzed by age (pre-high school vs. high school) and sex (male vs. female). A total of 749 cases were extracted. Fractures were more common in pre-high schoole

Futsal injuries: A 7-season incidence and characteristics.

OBJECTIVES: Most literatures describe the injury incidence in futsal during the matches, however, the true injury incidence in matches and trainings through the season is unclear. The number of injuries, player position, circumstances, severity, incidence and burden per 1000 player hours, locations and types of injuries were examined. RESULTS: A total of 518 injuries were reported during the trainings (302, 58.3%) and matches (216, 41.

Observational Study of Self-Reported Offshore Sailing-Related Injuries in a Wide Range of Amateur and Professional Sailors.

INTRODUCTION: Offshore sailing yields injury risk. Unfortunately, many studies are restricted to a specific geographic location, regatta, or class of sailboat or to only professional sailors. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to gather a large database of sailing-related injuries with demographic, injury, and voyage characteristics. METHODS: An observational study of self-reported offshore sailing-related injuries was performed using an internet-based, multiple-choice survey distributed on social media. Data were analyzed statistically with the use of the Shapiro-Wilk test, Mann-Wh

[Do not overlook Lisfranc injuries].

BACKGROUND: Lisfranc injury is rare and often very subtle. Subsequently, 20-50% of injuries are initially missed. Late or missed diagnosis increases the risk of post-traumatic osteoarthritis. CASE: A 51-year old men visited our surgical outpatient clinic with plantar hematoma and inability to bear weight on the right foot after he tripped three weeks earlier. Initial visitation to the emergency department after trauma led to the diagnosis contusion or ligament injury of the foot/ankle. After additional CT-scan of the foot, the final diagnosis of subtle/stable Lisfranc injury was made. Twelve

Epidemiology of Football Injuries of the German Bundesliga: A Media-Based, Prospective Analysis over 7 Consecutive Seasons.

BACKGROUND: This study describes the implementation of a standardised, prospective injury database covering the entire 1st male German football league ("Bundesliga") based on publicly available media data. For the first time, various media sources were used simultaneously as the external validity of media-generated data was low in the past compared to data obtained by way of the "gold standard", i.e. by the teams' medical staffs. METHODS: The study covers 7 consecutive seasons (2014/15-2020/21). The primary data source was the online version of the sport-specific journal "kicker Sportmagazin™
