Rare distal compressions of lower limb nerves include tarsal tunnel syndrome, entrapment of the first branch of the lateral plantar and medial calcaneal nerves, interdigital neuroma, compression of the deep peroneal nerve on the dorsum of the foot, entrapment of the superficial peroneal and sural nerves. Nerve conduction and electromyographic studies are essential to evaluate these peripheral nerve injuries in order to differentiate focal lower extremity nerve entrapments from ischemic mononeuropathies, lumbar radiculopathies or plexopathies, and generalized peripheral neuropathies. We retrospectively reviewed the records of thirty-two patients who had had an arthrodesis of the tarsometatarsal joints for intractable pain after a traumatic injury of the midfoot. The arthrodesis was performed at a mean of thirty-five months (range, six to 108 months) after the injury. All of the procedures were performed with use of rigid internal fixation, and twenty-four patients, in whom a defect had been created by debridement of the joints, were managed with an autogenous bone graft. Nine patients had at least one concomitant procedure, including a claw-toe procedure (eight patients),

Three patients with calcaneal fractures developed clawing of the lesser toes as a late sequela. Believing that this complication may be the result of contractures from an occult compartment syndrome of the foot, an investigation of the anatomical compartments of the foot was performed. The various compartments of 17 unembalmed adult lower limb specimens were injected with dyed gelatin in a controlled fashion. After freezing, the feet were sectioned either transversely or sagittally. The distribution of the dyed gelatin was then studied. Nine compartments were identified. These were the (1) med

1. Three lymphatic beds have been found in the rabbit hind limb:(i) the lymph from the foot and ankle drains into lymphatics which run with the deep veins to the popliteal node;(ii) the superficial lymphatics of the medial skin from mid-calf to the groin enter the inguinal node while those of the lateral skin drain into the popliteal node;(iii) the lymph draining the muscles collects in vessels which do not enter the popliteal node but join the femoral lymphatic post-nodally.2. The lymphatic system of the hind limb is regionalized so that lymph from a specific area enters the popliteal node in
