BACKGROUND: Between 1.7 and 3 million sports-related concussions occur every year. While most concussion symptoms resolve within 3 weeks, the absence of biomarker-based tests makes evaluating return to sport difficult. Existing guidelines primarily focus on cognitive and executive functions and often overlook proprioceptive abilities. This omission may increase athletes' risk of subsequent lower extremity injuries during competition.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to assess the rate of lower extremity injuries in athletes in the year following their first concussion. It was

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare but life-threatening infection characterized by rapid and extensive tissue necrosis. Early identification is often difficult, particularly when physical exam findings are subtle or atypical. We present the case of a man in his forties with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus who arrived at the emergency department after noticing discoloration and swelling of his right great toe. The patient had minimal pain but was noted to be hypotensive and tachycardic on arrival. Laboratory workup revealed hyperglycemia, hyponatremia, and elevated lactic acid. Ima

BACKGROUND: Female representation within athletics has increased as a result of Title IX, rising popularity, demand for equal compensation, and greater participation in multiple sports. Despite this, gender disparities in sports medicine research are apparent. This project serves to review the literature available on fifth-metatarsal fractures and assess the representation of female athletes in current literature.
METHODS: We used a standardized protocol to audit the representation of female athletes in sports science and sports medicine research for fifth-metatarsal fractures. Primary factor

Multiple fractures are frequently encountered in adults following road traffic accidents. A 32-year-old male presented with multiple fractures in his right lower extremity, including a femoral shaft fracture, distal third fractures of the tibia and fibula, as well as a calcaneal fracture. The patient provided a history indicative of a road traffic accident. X-rays were performed on both hip joints, both knee joints, and the ankle joints. Treatment involved open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with interlocking nailing for the femur, tibia, and fibula, alongside ORIF with plating using a

Although widely used in follow-up treatment protocols, the added value of routine radiographs to clinical decision-making in nonoperative treatment of patients with metatarsal fractures is unclear. This retrospective cohort study aimed to determine whether routine follow-up radiographs contributed to changes in treatment strategies in nonoperative treatment of patients with a metatarsal fracture. Adult (aged ≥ 18 years) patients who received nonoperative follow-up treatment for a metatarsal fracture between May first, 2020 and May second, 2022 were included. All relevant data were extracted fr

BACKGROUND: The recovery of limb function after ankle fracture surgery is a gradual process. The main purpose of implementing early functional exercise, joint mobility, muscle contraction function, passive ankle flexion and extension exercises, or physical factor therapy techniques is to achieve the rapid recovery of normal physiological limb function. However, currently the most effective rehabilitation training method is staged limb functional exercise, which promotes rapid recovery of limb function while preventing adverse consequences caused by overwork or insufficient training. Staged lim

INTRODUCTION: Seymour physeal fractures of the distal phalanx of the Hallux in children are common but rarely described in the literature. There is limited literature investigating how these fractures should be specifically treated. Generally, good results are reported when open fractures are treated with debridement and antibiotics. This large retrospective review evaluates incidence of infection and compares outcomes of various treatments for Seymour physeal fractures of the distal phalanx of the Hallux in children.
METHODS: This study included patients ≤18 years of age treated for Seymour

INTRODUCTION: The fifth metatarsal fracture is a foot injury that occurs in sports activities. This fracture has been associated with risk factors based on intrinsic variables such as type of feet (flatfoot or cavus foot), foot pathologies, and bone density among others. Extrinsic variables associated with fifth metatarsal fractures include sports maneuvers, the type of sports practice, and contact surface. Although this injury has been investigated over the years, there is no consensus on the most relevant risk factors that cause this injury. An increase in the number of people with fractures

BACKGROUND: Temporary ankle-spanning circular fixation aims to provide osseous stability while (1) allowing access to and recovery of the traumatized soft-tissue envelope and (2) facilitating safe, comfortable, and clinically relevant cross-sectional imaging for surgical planning. It is most commonly utilized in a "span-scan-plan" treatment strategy in cases of peri-articular fractures around the ankle2. Conventional monolateral fixators are prone to morbidity at the half-pin sites in the foot and variation in construct stability. Temporary ankle-spanning circular external fixation of the trau

The sinus tarsi approach is increasingly growing in popularity for open reduction internal fixation of calcaneus fractures. Multiple studies have demonstrated favorable short-term results compared to the traditional extensile L incision, however long-term data over 5 years is currently limited to a single retrospective case series. Following local ethical approval, all patients who had completed a minimum 5 years from time of operation were contacted with a Standardized Telephone Questionnaire completed. This followed a previous retrospective chart review, with follow up telephone or clinic co

IntroductionStudies have suggested a strong association between depression and poor outcomes following various orthopaedic surgeries. However, depression's impact on complications following open reduction/internal fixation (ORIF) of trimalleolar fractures has not been elucidated. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether depression is associated with higher rates of readmissions and medical complications following ORIF of trimalleolar fractures.MethodsA database query from January, 2020, through March, 2021, identifying adults who underwent trimalleolar ORIF generated 50 154 patients. Loss of the thumb secondary to trauma leads to significant disability due to the digit contributing 40% of overall hand function. Toe-to-thumb transfer has been a well-studied reconstructive method as a means to restore function after thumb amputation. First described in 1969 by Cobbett and colleagues, toe-to-thumb transfers have undergone several modifications in technique to better improve functional and aesthetic outcomes, including toe wrap-around flaps, trimmed great toe transfer, and second toe transfers. Although these methods have allowed patients to retain use of the thumb, traditiona

The aim of this study is to bring attention to a unique case and our approach to treatment in this context. We describe a case of an 11-year-old male who presented to us with an injury to his left knee following trauma with pain, swelling, shortening and deformity for one day. An X-ray revealed a transepiphyseal fracture dislocation of the left distal femur (Salter-Harris type 1 injury) and neurovascular examination was conclusive of foot drop which pointed towards injury to common peroneal nerve (CPN). The patient was taken up for closed reduction with percutaneous pinning under mobile C-arm

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Acute rupture of the tibialis anterior tendon and other tendons is an extremely rare injury. It is usually associated with minor trauma in older patients with medical comorbidity. Surgeons must be alert for rupture of these tendons which can complicate a closed tibial fracture.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old man was transferred to the emergency department with a segmental fracture at the lower third of his tibia. The patient could not actively dorsiflex his right ankle and first toe but was able to dorsiflex other toes actively. The tibialis anterior and extenso

In 3D-analysis of the calcaneus, a consistent coordinate system aligned with the original anatomical directions is crucial for pre- and postoperative analysis. This importance stems from the calcaneus's key role in weight-bearing and biomechanical alignment. However, defining a reliable coordinate system based solely on fractured or surgically reconstructed calcanei presents significant challenges. Given its anatomical prominence and consistent orientation, the talus offers a potential solution to this challenge. Our work explores the feasibility of talus-derived coordinate systems for 3D-mode

Background Virtual fracture clinics (VFCs) offer a remote alternative to traditional fracture clinics, potentially reducing the burden on in-person services. This is particularly relevant for fractures that typically do not require follow-up, such as toe fractures, which are commonly managed conservatively. Methods This study evaluated the effectiveness of VFCs in managing toe fractures. Patients treated conservatively were identified using HIVE software, and their outcomes were assessed via a telephone survey. The survey included the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) and additional questi

BACKGROUND: Lisfranc injuries describe a spectrum of midfoot and tarsometatarsal joint (TMTJ) trauma ranging from purely ligamentous to multiple fracture-dislocations. Lisfranc injuries represent 0.2 % of all fractures and are seen predictably, with mechanisms involving a fall from height, crushing, or torsion. Diagnosis can be challenging, with approximately 20 % of cases being missed, and relies upon clinical acumen and proficient image interpretation. Whilst multiple classification systems have described Lisfranc injuries using a 3-column concept, these add zero prognostic value and are the
