BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To determine whether women with low bone mineral density are at increased risk of stroke, the present study was conducted.
METHODS: We studied 4024 ambulatory women aged 65 years or older participating in the prospective Study of Osteoporotic Fractures. Bone mineral density was measured at baseline using single photon absorptiometry; strokes were ascertained using a computerized Medicare data base and death certificates.

The prognosis of intraarticular calcaneal fractures is variable, ranging from severe functional impairment and pain to complete return of normal function. Clinical assessment and CT scanning were performed 1-11 years after fracture in 45 patients (51 fractures) to determine the relationship between the CT findings and clinical status. 9704 ambulatory women aged 65 years or older were prospectively studied to determine whether low bone mineral density (osteopenia) was associated with mortality. Bone mineral density was measured at entry to the study by single-photon absorptiometry. 299 women died during a mean of 2.8 years' follow-up. Eleven patients with 12 open or closed fractures of the calcaneal apophysis were reviewed. A series of 22 calcaneal fractures operated over 4 yr is presented. Radiographic evaluation of these fractures using axial, lateral, anteroposterior, and oblique medial projection (Broden's view) with varying tube angulation toward the head and computerized axial tomography in two planes, coronal and transverse, were done. Aetiopathogenesis of the necrosis of the talus has not yet been definitely clarified, and neither has that of the other aseptic necroses. In a prospective study of stress injuries of the lower extremities of U.S. Marine recruits, we derived a frequency distribution of stress fractures. The most frequently fractured bone was the tibia (73%), while the single most common site was the posterior calcaneal tuberosity (21%). The natural history of stress fractures by scintigraphy and radiography has been outlined, showing the evolutionary changes on either study as a universal progression independent of injury site or type of stress. 132 injuries of the Lisfranc joint were reviewed in order to show methods of diagnosis and treatment. Injuries of this joint are rare. Almost one third are open fractures and/or dislocations, mostly comminuted lesions, associated with severe soft tissue trauma and so decreasing blood supply of the foot. Experience with forty-nine patients with surgically treated transchondral fractures of the talar dome seen between 1957 and 1977 at our institution has indicated that surgical treatment yields a good long-term result.
