Integration of multisources data for quarry slope stability assessment in the Itaoca district (Southeastern Brazil).

Usually, stability conditions of excavation slopes are evaluated by means of kinematic analysis and geomechanical classification systems. However, field surveys are concentrated at the slope toe and information about the upper and internal portions of rock masses are not taken into account. In order to tackle with these issues multisources data were integrated. The studies were carried out in a marble quarry located in one of the largest Brazilian poles of dimension stones. Results have shown that drone images actually help in the structural characterization of rock masses because they allow t

Checkrein Deformity of the Hallux and Second Toe after Soft-Tissue Injury.

We report the case of a patient who developed a checkrein deformity of the hallux and of the second toe following a direct soft tissue trauma to his right leg, with no associated fracture. This dynamic deformity caused the patient significant trouble walking and prevented him from playing any sport as in the stance phase of gait the toes were forced into maximum plantar flexion and ended up trapped under the foot. An MRI study did not show any bone injury or tendinous tethering. So the cause could be a subclinical compartment syndrome. Treatment consisted of a z-plasty and application of a pul

A novel technique for proximal interphalangeal joint fracture-dislocations: the second toe middle phalanx osteochondral graft.

Many different surgical techniques have been used to treat unstable dorsal proximal interphalangeal joint fracture-dislocations. The authors have used the base of the middle phalanx of the second toe base as an alternative autograft to treat this type of injury. This retrospective study assessed the clinical outcomes of this procedure in 11 patients. Range of motion, grip strength, Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score and donor site morbidity were assessed at regular intervals postoperatively. Nine patients had acute injuries and two had chronic injuries. The mean range of motion in

Early weight bearing in acetabular and pelvic fractures.

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK: The incidence of pelvic and acetabular fractures is increasing during the years, counting 37 pelvic fractures per 100000 people annually. No weight bearing or toe touch weight bearing are usually chosen in the initial management to allow fracture and ligamentous healing and avoid fracture displacement and fixation failure. On the other hand, early weight bearing may stimulate fracture healing and allow prompt functional recovery, faster return to work and recreational activities and reduce complications linked to late rehabilitation.  Aim of the study is to revi

Weight-bearing in Trauma Surgery (WiTS) Study: A national survey of UK Trauma & Orthopaedic multidisciplinary health professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Weight-bearing (WB) status following a fracture or surgical fixation is an important determinant of the mechanical environment for healing. In order for healthcare professionals to communicate and understand the extent of bearing weight through a limb, clear terminology must be used. There is widespread variation in the usage and definitions of WB terminology in the literature and clinical practice. This study sought to define the understanding and extent of variation across the United Kingdom. METHODS: A nationwide online survey of UK-based Trauma & Orthopaedic (T&O) multidisci

Changing epidemiology of lower extremity fractures in adults over a 15-year period - a National Hospital Discharge Registry study.

BACKGROUND: Demographic changes led to an increasingly ageing population in Germany and thus to possible changes in the frequency of fractures. The primary aim of this study was to report changes in fracture rates of the lower extremities in Germany in 2002 compared to 2017 and to evaluate those changes. METHODS: Inpatient data from the German National Hospital Discharge Registry (ICD10) for 2002 and 2017 were evaluated. Changes in total counts and incidence rates were analysed for fractures in the following locations: femoral neck, pertrochanteric, subtrochanteric, distal femur, femoral shaf

Platelet rich plasma for hallux sesamoid injuries: a case series.

OBJECTIVE: Hallux sesamoid injuries are well described and can be debilitating and chronically disabling. The role of orthobiologics such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in sesamoid injuries has not been reported. This study describes three cases of recalcitrant hallux sesamoid injuries in teenage athletes who returned to impact activities, pain free, following one treatment of PRP. METHODS: This is a case-series study describing three teenage athletes presenting to a tertiary level pediatric sports medicine practice with chronic hallux sesamoid injuries. RESULTS: The three patients (two femal

Suture Stabilization of Open Physeal Fractures of the Great Toe Distal Phalanx (Seymour Fracture).

BACKGROUND: Open physeal fractures of the distal phalanx of the hallux are analogous to Seymour fractures of the hand. When missed, these injuries can result in long-term sequelae including infection, pain, nail deformity, and physeal arrest. Nevertheless, there is a paucity in the literature regarding optimal surgical treatment for these challenging injuries. We present a novel technique and case series for suture-only stabilization of Seymour fractures of the great toe. METHODS: Billing records were used to identify all children aged 18 years or younger who underwent operative treatment ope

Differences in toe flexor strength and foot morphology between wheelchair dependent and ambulant older people in long-term care: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus, lesser toe deformity, and muscle weakness of the toe flexors contribute to falls in older people. This study aimed to examine the differences in toe flexor strength and foot morphology in older people requiring long-term care due to changes in the way they mobilize in everyday life. METHODS: This study included 84 people aged ≥70 years without motor paralysis who underwent rehabilitation. They were divided into those who could mobilize without a wheelchair (walking group, n = 54) and those who used a wheelchair to mobilize (wheelchair group, n = 30). The presence or

Early Results of a Novel Intramedullary Fixation Device for Proximal Fifth Metatarsal Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Proximal fifth metatarsal fractures are commonly treated surgically due to their poor healing capacity. While intramedullary screws may be the most popular operative treatment choice, newer fixation methods continue to develop. We present a case series utilizing a novel intramedullary fixation device for proximal fifth metatarsal fractures. To our knowledge, no other study in the literature has assessed the safety and efficacy of this fixation method. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for 16 patients with proximal fifth metatarsal fractures who underwent fixation wit

Multicentric Osteolysis, Nodulosis, and Arthropathy in two unrelated children with matrix metalloproteinase 2 variants: Genetic-skeletal correlations.

Multicentric Osteolysis, Nodulosis, and Arthropathy (MONA) syndrome is a rare genetic skeletal dysplasia. Its diagnosis can be deceptively similar to childhood-onset genetic skeletal dysplasias and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. We aimed to report the syndrome's clinical and radiologic features with emphasis on skeletal manifestations. And establish relevant phenotype-genotype correlations. We evaluated two boys, 4-and-7-years-old with MONA syndrome. Both patients had consanguineous parents. We verified the diagnosis by correlating the outcomes of clinical, radiologic and molecular analysis. W

Treatment of shoulder joint luxation with glenoid ostectomy in a miniature donkey.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old 128-kg miniature donkey gelding was evaluated for right forelimb lameness of 7 weeks' duration. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Muscular atrophy of the infraspinatus and supraspinatus muscles over the right scapula with a palpable bony prominence over the point of the shoulder was evident. At the walk, the cranial phase of the stride was reduced with adduction of the distal aspect of the limb, dragging of the toe, and lameness (grade, 4/5). Lateral and craniocaudal radiographs of the right shoulder joint revealed lateral luxation of the humerus in relation to the scapula wi

Tibial lengthening using a retrograde magnetically driven intramedullary lengthening device in 10 patients with preexisting ankle and hindfoot fusion.

Background and purpose - Motorized intramedullary lengthening nails (ILNs) have been developed as an alternative to external fixators for long bone lengthening. The antegrade approach represents the standard method for tibial ILN insertion. In patients with preexisting ankle and hindfoot fusion a retrograde approach provides an alternative technique that has not been evaluated so far. We report the outcome of this method in 10 patients. Patients and methods - This retrospective study included 10 patients (mean age 18 years [13-25]) with preexisting ankle and hindfoot fusion who underwent tibia
