Detection of water-rich areas and seepage channels via the transient electromagnetic method, electrical resistivity tomography, and self-potential method.

Groundwater serves as a vital water resource for human society, yet it also plays a significant role in geological- and engineering-related hazards, such as landslides, tunnel collapses, and mining-related issues. Detecting water-rich zones and groundwater seepage pathways is essential for mitigating these risks. The Xiaogangou Coal Mine, located in a low- to mid-mountainous region at the northern foot of the Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang, China, contains multiple coal seams distributed at a depth of approximately 600 m. Surface infiltration from two rivers in the area has resulted in water-r

Advanced Testing Protocols Simulate Failures and Validate Antioxidant Polyethylene in Ankle Implants.

Total ankle replacement (TAR) has become an effective treatment for end-stage ankle osteoarthritis. Multiple factors, including patient characteristics, surgical technique, alignment, and bearing surfaces, influence TAR survivorship. Polyethylene (PE) fatigue is a key consideration in improving outcomes. This study establishes a novel, clinically relevant testing protocol incorporating varus-valgus rotation to simulate polyethylene fatigue failures observed in mobile-bearing total ankle replacements. Using this robust methodology, we evaluated the impact of oxidation and antioxidant stabilizat

Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor in the Foot Detected by 99m Tc-FAPI-46 SPECT/CT and 18 F-FDG PET/CT.

A 58-year-old woman presented with disabling bone pain and muscle weakness. Laboratory tests were unremarkable, except for decreased serum phosphate and elevated urine phosphate levels. A 99m Tc-MDP scan revealed multiple sites of bone fractures. Both 18 F-FDG PET/CT and 99m Tc-FAPI-46 scans identified a lesion in the left heel, which was later resected and diagnosed as phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor on pathologic evaluation. This case represents a pioneering experience in utilizing FAPI for detecting the origin of tumor-induced osteomalacia. It underscores the potential utility of various rad

Preoperative Ankle Swelling and the Effect On Postoperative Wound Complications Following Ankle Fracture Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Swelling following an ankle fracture is commonly believed to preclude surgical fixation; swelling is thought to be associated with increased wound complications. Delaying surgery until swelling subsides is thought to secure better outcomes, although no guidelines exist to direct surgeons when an appropriate time to intervention is or whether a visual inspection of the swelling is correlated to quantitative measurement. This study aimed to identify whether preoperative ankle swelling influences postoperative wound complications following ankle fracture surgery. METHODS: This prospe

Traumatic Hemorrhagic Lung Injury With Pelvic and Femur Fractures Requiring Resuscitative Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta, Operative Fixation on Dual-Circuit Venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, and Systemic Isoflurane Sedation.

Traumatic pulmonary hemorrhage is uncommon and rarely results in respiratory failure requiring mechanical circulatory support. Indications for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in injured patients are not well-defined, but recent work indicates a potential survival benefit. Additionally, coughing-induced hemorrhage requires a complex sedation strategy. We describe management of a young polytrauma patient with traumatic lung failure requiring advanced venovenous (VV)-ECMO support and novel sedation strategy to facilitate healing. An 18-year-old boy sustained a 40-foot fall and develope

Fifth metatarsal fracture mapping and associated clinical outcomes.

PURPOSE: Fifth metatarsal fractures are among the most common foot injuries. Classification of these fractures are commonly used to guide treatment, however the reliability of classification systems are variable. METHODS: A historic cohort study of 2,165 patients with fifth metatarsal fractures managed at a Level 1 Major Trauma Centre between 2016 and 2023 was conducted. Fractures configurations were mapped to identify common patterns. Clinical outcomes including time to discharge (TTD), further clinic appointments (FCA), and operative intervention (OI) were assessed based on these common pat

Imaging Diagnostics of Lisfranc Joint Injuries.

Lisfranc injuries are traumas to the tarsometatarsal joint, ranging from simple capsular ruptures to complex fracture-dislocations. Overall, these injuries are rare and may be underdiagnosed due to often subtle changes in initial imaging, requiring increased attention. This review provides an overview of the anatomy, injury mechanisms, classification, and diagnosis of Lisfranc injuries using case examples and relevant literature. The Lisfranc joint connects the fore- and midfoot and stabilizes the foot's arch. It is stabilized by multiple ligaments, with the Lisfranc ligament complex between the

Longitudinal changes in lower limb muscle activity during walking and stair climbing with full weight bearing in postoperative Trimalleolar fracture patients.

Patients after ankle fracture are instructed to avoid weight bearing for several weeks. This study aimed to determine changes in lower limb muscle activity during both walking and stair climbing at 1 and 2 months after resuming weight bearing. The study population consisted of 10 patients who had undergone open osteosynthesis for unilateral trimalleolar fracture. Lower limb muscle activity was measured using surface electromyography. When it became possible to walk without the aid of assistive devices, we measured the lower limb muscle activity during walking and stair climbing. As a result of

Lifetime follow-up of an adult patient with pediatric-onset hypophosphatasia complicated with advanced chronic kidney disease.

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare inborn-error-of-metabolism caused by mutations in the ALPL gene, resulting in deficient activity of tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase and impaired skeletal mineralization. Affected individuals have a higher prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) than the general population. We report a woman who underwent craniosynostosis surgery in infancy and lost her deciduous teeth prematurely. From age 27, she experienced recurrent foot pain due to multiple metatarsal fractures. Low levels of total alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was noted at 39 years of age, and low

Arthroscopic Fixation of Tibial Plafond Central Depression Pilon Fracture With Percutaneous Jail Screw Technique.

Ankle fractures comprise up to 10% of fracture cases in adults. Ankle fractures frequently require surgical treatment to prevent posttraumatic osteoarthritis in the future. One of the most complex patterns is the pilon type of ankle fracture. It is commonly associated with high complication rates. When the foot is in a neutral position, a pure compression force leads to a central depression type of tibial plafond fracture. Traditionally, it is managed by open reduction and internal fixation, which requires large incisions and more soft-tissue dissection. The central depression is difficult to

An Unusual Combination of Injuries Involving Lateral Dislocation of the First and Fifth Metatarsophalangeal Joints Along With Fractures of the Other Toes on the Same Foot: A Report of a Rare Case.

Dislocations of the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints following trauma are uncommon and often underreported. Most documented cases involve the first MTP joint, or occasionally one or two of the lesser MTP joints, with the direction of dislocation predominantly dorsal. The rarity of these injuries, particularly those affecting multiple joints or exhibiting atypical patterns, poses challenges in both diagnosis and management. In some instances, diagnosis is difficult without imaging. Prompt reduction is essential to prevent neurovascular complications. MTP joint dislocations can be reduced using

Technical Tip: The Use of Arthroscopic Portals to Safeguard Medial Neurovascular Structures During Suture Button Fixation.

IntroductionAnkle fractures with concurrent syndesmotic instability are commonly encountered orthopaedic injuries. Suture button syndesmotic fixation has emerged as a favorable alternative to traditional screw fixation due to its comparable biomechanical stability and reduced hardware removal rates. However, concerns persist regarding potential injury to medial neurovascular structures during tibial cortical button deployment and a medial incision is often recommended for verification.TechniqueThis paper describes a safe and reproducible technique for suture button fixation that offers an alte

Persuasive of lateral supra malleolar flap for distal leg and foot reconstruction. A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Distal leg and foot have unique anatomical characteristics, and multiple etiologies may cause defects in various patterns that mandate reconstruction. Local flaps, such as perforator flaps, can give good outcomes with less complication. The lateral supra malleolar flap can effectively cover the distal leg and foot defect. In this article, we highlight the utility of this flap and its outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study is a descriptive, retrospective, multi-center, hospital-based performed to assess the efficacy of lateral supra malleolar flap in the reconstruction of dist
