Association between type 2 diabetes and site-specific fracture risk: A systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies including over 13 million participants.

OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to quantify the association between Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and the risk of fracture at various anatomical sites by synthesising data from cohort studies. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across Medline, Embase, CINAHL and Web of Science databases, from inception to 10 June 2025. We estimated pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals using random-effects models. This study is registered with PROSPERO (CRD42024548795). RESULTS: This meta-analysis of 22 studies, selected from 6534 screened studies, assessed a total of 13,074,868

From Head to Toe: Investigating Postconcussion Risks for Lower Extremity Injuries in Young Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Between 1.7 and 3 million sports-related concussions occur every year. While most concussion symptoms resolve within 3 weeks, the absence of biomarker-based tests makes evaluating return to sport difficult. Existing guidelines primarily focus on cognitive and executive functions and often overlook proprioceptive abilities. This omission may increase athletes' risk of subsequent lower extremity injuries during competition. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to assess the rate of lower extremity injuries in athletes in the year following their first concussion. It was

Defining Operative Indications in Lisfranc Injuries: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to determine operative indications for Lisfranc injuries. METHODS: A systematic review using a MEDLINE literature search was performed using the index "Lisfranc Injury" from 1980 onward using PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) guidelines where applicable. Inclusion criteria were all clinical studies reporting on the management of Lisfranc injuries obtained via the search index, including case reports, review articles, cohort studies, and randomized trials. Non-English-language articles, inaccessible articles, those

Is lateral ankle sprain of the child and adolescent a myth or a reality? A systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Ankle trauma in children and adolescents is the most common orthopedic injury encountered in pediatric trauma. It has long been recognized that a lateral ankle injury in this population is often a Salter and Harris type I fracture of the distal fibula (SH1). The purpose of this study is to confirm the existence of a lateral ankle sprain and to report the incidence of each pathology of the lateral ankle compartment: SH1 fracture, ATFL injury, and osteochondral avulsions. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature is done using the database provided by PubMed and Embase. All art

Fractures and Chronic Recurrence are Commonly Associated with Ankle Sprains: a 5-year Population-level Cohort of Patients Seen in the U.S. Military Health System.

BACKGROUND: Whereas ankle-foot injuries are ubiquitous and affect ~16% of military service-members, granularity of information pertaining to ankle sprain subgroups and associated variables is lacking. The purpose of this study was to characterize and contextualize the burden of ankle sprain injuries in the U.S. Military Health System. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of beneficiaries seeking care for ankle sprains, utilizing data from the Military Health System Data Repository from 2009 to 2013. Diagnosis and procedural codes were used to identify and categorize ankle sprains as

Is there any change in surgeon's attitude to the management of ankle fractures accompanying syndesmotic injury? A nationwide survey.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the attitudes of orthopedic surgeons to the management of ankle fractures accompanied by syndesmotic injury with a nationwide survey. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In the first step of this descriptive study, an electronic survey was prepared in Google drive and a survey link was sent to the Turk-Ortopedi e-mail group between 09 and 19 January 2019. The orthopedic surgeons and residents were requested to complete the questionnaire. A total of 320 orthopedic surgeons (77%) and residents (23%) participated in the survey. The responses were analyzed statistical

Technological Innovations in Disease Management: Text Mining US Patent Data From 1995 to 2017.

BACKGROUND: Patents are important intellectual property protecting technological innovations that inspire efficient research and development in biomedicine. The number of awarded patents serves as an important indicator of economic growth and technological innovation. Researchers have mined patents to characterize the focuses and trends of technological innovations in many fields. OBJECTIVE: To expand patent mining to biomedicine and facilitate future resource allocation in biomedical research for the United States, we analyzed US patent documents to determine the focuses and trends of protec

Postoperative Reoperations and Complications in 32,307 Ankle Fractures With and Without Concurrent Ankle Arthroscopic Procedures in a 5-Year Period Based on a Large U.S. Healthcare Database.

Residual symptoms often persist even after successful operative reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of ankle fractures. Concurrent ankle arthroscopic procedures (CAAPs) have been proposed to improve clinical outcomes; however, a dearth of evidence is available supporting this practice. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the reoperation and complication rates after ORIF of ankle fractures with and without CAAPs. Reoperations and complications after ORIF of ankle fractures were identified using the PearlDiver database from January 2007 to December 2011. The CAAPs included bon

Extremity fractures associated with ATVs and dirt bikes: a 10-year national epidemiologic study.

BACKGROUND: Morbidity and mortality of all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes have been studied, as well as the association of helmet use and head injury. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to compare and contrast the patterns of extremity fractures associated with ATVs and dirt bikes. We believe there will be unique and potentially preventable injury patterns associated with dirt bikes and three-wheeled ATVs due to the poor stability of these vehicles. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was used to ac
