Functional Assessment of Peroneal Muscles Using Ultrasound Imaging in Chronic Ankle Instability.

BACKGROUND: Lateral ankle sprains (LAS) result in chronic ankle instability (CAI), causing ongoing instability. Although peroneal muscle weakness is documented in CAI, surface electromyography shows similar activation patterns between CAI and healthy individuals, suggesting structural rather than neural deficits. Ultrasound imaging (USI) uniquely enables noninvasive assessment of muscle morphology and quality through cross-sectional area and echogenicity measurements. However, previous USI studies examined peroneals only in nonweight-bearing positions, potentially missing functional deficits.

[A not-so-typical ankle sprain].

BACKGROUND: An estimated hundreds of thousands of patients are treated in the Netherlands every year for an ankle sprain. We describe two cases where the course of an ankle sprain differed from the usual presentation. CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1: A 22-year-old male presented to the Emergency Department following an inversion sprain to the ankle. The pain and swelling were localized around the subtalar joint rather than the lateral ankle ligament(s), with limited range of motion in the subtalar joint. Imaging revealed a fracture through a tarsal coalition. The patient was treated with cast immob

Platelet-rich plasma and hyaluronic acid in the treatment of acute ankle sprains: A review.

Ankle sprains are prevalent musculoskeletal injuries commonly encountered in the general population, particularly among athletes. While conventional treatments are widely practiced, regenerative therapies have emerged as potential adjunctive options. This narrative review aims to assess the role of regenerative therapy in the management of acute ankle sprains and evaluate its efficacy through an analysis of the literature. We focused on studies available in PubMed, restricting our search to English-language articles published between January 2005 and December 2024. Our review identified five s

Biomechanical evaluation of load transfer in Talus focal resurfacing implant: experimental and finite element models.

INTRODUCTION: Osteochondral lesions (OTLs) are common injuries in ankle sprains, occurring in up to 70 % of patients. Recovery options are limited due to the talus bone's poor vascularization. This study aimed to develop a computational model of an ankle joint to evaluate cartilage stress in the presence of an OTL and assess the biomechanical effectiveness of a focal resurfacing prosthesis in reducing joint stress. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Both in silico and physical model models were developed based on a previous case study involving a patient with a medial OTL in the right ankle. A 10 mm diam

Towards the strategies of return to sport after lateral ankle Sprain: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Returning to sport (RTS) from lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is multifaceted and interdisciplinary. This systematic review aimed to investigate the factors involved in RTS and further establish a standard paradigm of RTS to treat and rehabilitate the LAS. METHODS: Four electronic databases, including PubMed (MEDLINE), Web of Science, Science Direct, and Scopus, were searched until March 1, 2024. The literature was identified, screened, evaluated, managed and data was extracted by developing inclusion criteria based on the PICO model for systematic reviews. The quality of the studies w

Clinical impairments associated with ankle disability in patients with acute lateral ankle sprain.

BACKGROUND: Acute lateral ankle sprains (ALAS) are common musculoskeletal injuries among physically active individuals. While various impairments occur following ALAS, limited information is available on the factors contributing to ankle disability. This study aimed to investigate the association between the clinical impairments and ankle disability in patients with ALAS. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional design with 55 ALAS patients within two weeks of injury. Clinical impairments, including inflammatory symptoms (e.g., pain and swelling), restricted total ankle motion, joint laxity (e

Management of Acute Ankle Sprains: Common Questions and Answers.

Acute ankle sprains are a common musculoskeletal injury. As part of the physical examination, a combination of ankle-specific tests should be used to evaluate ligaments. Delaying the examination until 4 to 7 days postinjury increases diagnostic accuracy of sprain severity. In the acute setting, the Ottawa Foot and Ankle rules can help determine when radiography does not need to be ordered to evaluate for fracture. Management of acute ankle sprains should include joint protection, pain control, external ankle supports for 5 to 10 days, early functional activity, and targeted rehabilitation exer

Volleyball-Related Injuries.

Volleyball is a highly popular women's sport played recreationally and competitively by a wide variety of ages. Game play requires agility, power, flexibility, and stamina to succeed. Although injury rate is lower compared to other team sports, athletes are still predisposed to acute injuries of the ankle and overuse injuries of the shoulder and knee. Injury patterns differ based on player subspecialty and playing surface. Most injuries are amenable to nonoperative treatment and require little time removed from play.

Imaging Findings in Acute Ankle Sprain and Syndesmosis Injury.

Acute ankle sprain including distal tibiofibular syndesmosis injury is the most common lower limb sports injury. In the athletic population, imaging with magnetic resonance imaging plays an important role in the grading of acute ankle sprain but crucially also in the detection of associated injuries, such as bone contusion, osteochondral lesions, fracture, and tendon injury. Accurate diagnosis in the acute phase of injury facilitates surgical decision making, appropriate rehabilitation, and prediction of return-to-play time. This review article examines the medial ligament complex, the lateral

Ligamentous Injuries in Stable Ankle Fractures: An MRI-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Ankle fractures are common orthopaedic injuries, and their management is primarily determined by fracture stability. The Lauge-Hansen classification system categorizes fractures according to mechanism of injury and ligaments involved. Supination external rotation (SER) type 2 fractures correspond to stable weber B fractures and are traditionally treated nonoperatively, whereas SER 3 and SER 4 fractures, characterized by syndesmosis disruption, typically require surgical intervention. We hypothesize that some apparently stable injuries may involve additional structures, challenging

Functional and return-to-sport outcomes after arthroscopic anatomic reconstruction of the lateral ligaments of the ankle.

BACKGROUND: Chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI) affects 20-40 % of patients following a lateral ankle sprain and is frequently managed with surgical reconstruction when conservative treatments fail. Although arthroscopic anatomic reconstruction techniques have been increasingly adopted, few studies specifically examine their functional outcomes and rates of return to sport (RTS). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate functional outcomes and RTS rates after arthroscopic anatomic reconstruction of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) using gracilis
