A Novel Approach to the Assessment of Limb Loading Symmetry in Adolescent Athletes with and without a History of Ankle Sprains Prior to an ACL-R.

OBJECTIVES: The limb symmetry index (LSI) is commonly used for return-to-sport decisions but focuses primarily on the knee, neglecting intralimb compensations at the ankle and hip. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using energy absorption contributions (EAC) to assess joint loading asymmetry (LSI EAC ). This approach was compared with the conventional method of joint moment analysis in adolescent athletes with and without prior ankle sprains before anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R) and in healthy controls. METHODS: Thirty-nine adolescent athletes were divided into thre

Lower-extremity kinematics during unanticipated side-cutting including before initial ground contact.

BACKGROUND: The biomechanical reasons why lateral ankle sprains (LAS) are more likely to occur during unanticipated side-cutting (UNA-SC) than under anticipated side-cutting (ANT-SC) are unclear. RESEARCH QUESTION: Are there differences in lower-extremity kinematics between ANT-SC and UNA-SC that are relevant to LAS incidence? METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. Twenty-one male soccer players performed a 45° ANT-SC and UNA-SC. Their ankle, knee, and hip joints and foot segment kinematic data, from 0.2 s before initial ground contact (IC) to toe-off, were analyzed using paired t tests o

Track and Field Injuries: Imaging Aspects.

Track and field sports, also known as athletics, encompassing sports modalities such as running, jumping, and throwing, is a highly demanding sport with significant risk of injury. This review discusses the epidemiology, imaging techniques, and especially typical injury patterns associated with various track and field disciplines. Elite athletes, who undergo rigorous training and repetitive high-impact activities, are particularly prone to musculoskeletal injuries, with lower extremity injuries, such as muscle strains, ligament sprains, and bone stress injuries, the most common. Injury pattern

Acute Lateral Ankle Sprain Impairs Function and Strength Without Altering Muscle or Tendon Stiffness: A Controlled Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Acute lateral ankle sprain (LAS) frequently results in persistent functional limitations. Understanding changes in calf muscle and Achilles tendon (AT) stiffness after LAS may shed light on mechanisms underlying impaired function. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of acute LAS on the mechanical properties of the calf muscles and the Achilles tendon, ankle function, pain, edema, and strength. METHODS: This controlled observational study was conducted from August 2023 to January 2025. Fourteen participants with acute LAS and 14 healthy controls were evaluated twice, 6 weeks a

The effects of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine rehabilitation programs on post-acute ankle sprain: A randomized controlled trial study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprain is a common clinical disease, which has the highest incidence rate among joint and ligament injuries. And acute ankle sprains can easily develop into chronic ankle instability, thereby increasing the difficulty of treatment. The current clinical guidelines for post-acute ankle sprains are still controversial. Pain and functional impairment are the most significant symptoms after ankle sprain. The main purpose of this study is to explore the safety and effectiveness of the intervention of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine rehabilitation programs on pos

Toe-out landing reduces anterior talofibular ligament strain while maintains calcaneofibular ligament strain in people with chronic ankle instability.

BACKGROUND: The anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) are vulnerable to be torn or ruptured during lateral ankle sprain (LAS), especially in people with chronic ankle instability (CAI). This study aims to determine whether landing with a larger toe-out angle would influence ATFL and CFL strains in people with CAI, aiming to contribute to the development of effective landing strategies to reduce LAS risk. METHODS: Thirty participants with CAI (22 males and 8 females, age: 21.2 ± 1.2 years, height: 176.9 ± 9.0 cm, body mass: 70.6 ± 12.1 kg, mean ± SD) were

High-Adhesive Hydrogel-Based Strain Sensor in the Clinical Diagnosis of Anterior Talofibular Ligament Sprain.

Anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) sprain is one of the most prevalent sports-related injuries, so proper evaluation of ligament sprains is critical for treatment options. However, existing tests suffer from a lack of standardized quantitative evaluation criteria, interindividual variability, incompatible materials, or risks of infection. Although advanced medical diagnostic methods already have been using noninvasive, portable, and wearable diagnostic electronics, these devices have insufficient adhesion to accurately respond to internal body injuries. Therefore, we propose a high-adhesive

Impact of Fatiguing Exercises on Movement Strategies in Chronic Ankle Instability, Lateral Ankle Sprain Copers, and Controls.

While research exists to induce fatigue using isokinetic dynamometers or simple repetition tasks in patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI), there is a lack of research examining landing movement strategies using fatigue protocols that mimic actual sports. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of CAI and fatiguing exercises on the lower-extremity kinematics and kinetics during single-leg drop landings among patients with CAI, lateral ankle sprain (LAS) copers and controls. A cross-sectional study recruited 20 patients with CAI, 20 LAS copers, and 20 controls in a biomechanics la

Does Deltoid Ligament Repair Reduce Complications and Improve Functional Outcomes Measured by PROMIS Scores Following Ankle Fracture Surgery?

BACKGROUND: Deltoid repair (DR) in ankle fracture surgery remains controversial. This study aims to determine whether DR reduces complications and improves outcomes measured by Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) computerized adaptive tests (CATs) of physical function (PF) and pain interference (PI). We hypothesized that DR would reduce complications and improve PROMIS scores. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 782 patients at a single institution who underwent ankle fracture surgery between January 2016 and December 2021. Two fellowship-trained foot and

Basketball: Biomechanics and Imaging Findings of Common Injuries.

Basketball is a high-intensity sport associated with a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries, most commonly involving the lower extremities. These injuries frequently result from high-impact loading, rapid directional changes, and biomechanical inefficiencies such as poor neuromuscular control and abnormal movement patterns. Although acute injuries often occur through noncontact mechanisms during play, direct contact injuries have become more common over the years. Overuse injuries are also frequent in basketball and may develop silently and progress over time. Imaging plays a vital role in d
