BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) aims to improve cosmesis and minimize soft tissue disruption by using small skin incisions. When using MIS in the forefoot, there is concern about iatrogenic neurovascular and tendon damage. The aim of this anatomical study was to assess the risk of iatrogenic injury while performing MIS techniques.
METHODS: Ten normal cadaveric feet were used. All of the procedures were performed in a cadaveric lab using a mini-C-arm by two surgeons: a consultant who has attended a cadaveric MIS training course but does not perform MIS in his regular practice (eig

Pseudoaneurysms in the foot are more often reported in the lateral plantar artery than the medial plantar artery, most likely because of its more superficial location. There are no reports of pseudoaneurysm of the medial plantar artery after trauma. We present two cases of pseudoaneurysm of the medial plantar artery after blunt foot trauma and foot laceration. This pseudoaneurysm compressed a posterior tibial nerve, resulting in tarsal tunnel syndrome. The patients were treated successfully using transcatheter embolization without the need for surgical intervention. The tarsal tunnel syndrome

This study examined (a) the effect of formalin administration into two different sensory fields, the lateral and medial hindpaw, in the spared nerve injury (SNI) model in rats and (b) peripheral antinociception by morphine when co-administered with formalin at lateral and medial hindpaw sites. Following SNI and injections into the lateral hindpaw, the site most commonly used to evaluate sensory changes using this model, flinching responses to formalin (0.5%, 1%) were unchanged. In contrast, following medial plantar hindpaw injections, flinching responses to formalin (1%, 2.5%) were significant

Heel pain is a common presenting symptom in ambulatory clinics. There are many causes, but a mechanical etiology is most common. Location of pain can be a guide to the proper diagnosis. The most common diagnosis is plantar fasciitis, a condition that leads to medial plantar heel pain, especially with the first weight-bearing steps in the morning and after long periods of rest. Other causes of plantar heel pain include calcaneal stress fracture (progressively worsening pain following an increase in activity level or change to a harder walking surface), nerve entrapment (pain accompanied by burn

Improvement of nerve regeneration and functional recovery following nerve injury is a challenging problem in clinical research. We have already shown that following rat sciatic nerve transection, the local administration of triiodothyronine (T3) significantly increased the number and the myelination of regenerated axons. Functional recovery is a sum of the number of regenerated axons and reinnervation of denervated peripheral targets. In the present study, we investigated whether the increased number of regenerated axons by T3-treatment is linked to improved reinnervation of hind limb muscles.

Sonography is commonly used for diagnosis of desmopathy of the proximal part of the suspensory ligament in horses. However, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has been stated to be superior for detecting disease and localizing lesions. In this retrospective study of 39 horses or 46 hind limbs with lameness due to proximal plantar metatarsal pain, the clinical and diagnostic findings are discussed and sonography and MR imaging compared for examination of the proximal part of the suspensory ligament. With MR imaging interpreted as the clinical gold standard, desmopathy of the proximal part of the s

The hindfoot is the part of the foot which is proximal to the midtarsal joint. The obvious causes of pain are not considered (post-traumatic etiologies, sprains and fractures but also cutaneous lesions). The main etiologies on the subject are successively exposed by following the localization of the pain. Diffuse pains (ankle arthritis tarsal osteoarthritis, algodystrophy, calcaneo-navicular synostosis but also bone diseases like stress fractures, Paget disease or tumors). UNLABELLED: Compartment syndrome of the lower leg or foot, a severe complication with a low incidence, is mostly caused by high-energy deceleration trauma. The diagnosis is based on clinical examination and intracompartmental pressure measurement. The most sensitive clinical symptom of compartment syndrome is severe pain. Clinical findings must be documented carefully. A fasciotomy should be performed when the difference between compartment pressure and diastolic blood pressure is less than 30 mm Hg or when clinical symptoms are obvious. Once the diagnosis is made, immediate fasciotomy of all

Central sensitization, caused either by tissue inflammation or peripheral nerve injury, plays an important role in persistent pain. An animal model of capsaicin-induced pain has well-defined peripheral and central sensitization components, thus is useful for studying the analgesic effect on two separate components. The focus of this study is to examine the analgesic effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on capsaicin-induced secondary hyperalgesia, which represents central sensitization. Capsaicin (0.1%, 20 microl) was injected into the plantar side of the left hind paw, and foot withdrawal thresh

Composite defect of the posterior aspect of the heel, including the Achilles tendon, usually is very difficult to reconstruct as we face the problems of controlling infection, resurfacing the deficient skin defect, and restoring plantar flexion. With the latest advances in microsurgery, several free composite flaps have been used to reconstruct the defect in the Achilles tendon region to achieve stable and functional soft tissue coverage. We report such a single-stage reconstruction of a complex Achilles wound using the modified neurosensory lateral arm free flap including the triceps tendon s
