Role and effect of vein-transplanted human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells in the repair of diabetic foot ulcers in rats.

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is one of diabetic complications, which is frequently present and tormented in diabetes mellitus. Most multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are capable of immune evasion, providing an allogeneic, ready-to-use, cell product option for therapeutic applications. The beneficial effect of MSCs for the treatment of a variety of traumatic injuries, such as open wounds, has been extensively explored. In this study, a rat DFU model was used to simulate the pathophysiology of clinical patients and to investigate the localization of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem

Infrared thermal imaging based study of localized cold stress induced thermoregulation in lower limbs: The role of age on the inversion time.

Thermoregulatory control of human body temperature is of paramount importance for normal bodily functions. Exposure of the upper and lower limbs to localized cold stress can cause cold-induced injuries and often lower limbs are more susceptible to damages from cold-induced injuries. In this study, we use infrared thermal imaging to probe localized cold stress induced cutaneous vasoconstriction of lower limbs in 33 healthy subjects. The cold stress is actuated by applying ice to the plantar surfaces of the lower limbs for 180 s and after removal of the cold stress, infrared thermography is util

Studying the impact of young age on prognosis and treatment in laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas using the SEER database.

BACKGROUND: Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) in young patients was reported to be more aggressive and associated with poorer survival than in older patients. However, very few studies contained sufficient cases to permit meaningful statistical analysis. It is still unknown whether less aggressive method like radical radiotherapy (RT) is comparable to total laryngectomy (TL) in survival rate among young patients. METHODS: This study extracted patient data from the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results database from 2004 to 2015. The findings for 304 patients (1.2%) below the age

Vascularized flap transfer to fingers with volar digital veins as recipient vessels.

Traditionally free vascularized flap transfers to the fingers connect to the proper digital artery and dorsal veins. We report our experience using the volar digital veins as recipient veins for free vascularized flap transfers in 14 fingers of 12 patients. One or two veins (three flaps with two veins, 11 flaps with one vein) of the flap were anastomosed to volar digital veins in the recipient site. The arteries of these flaps were connected to the proper digital arteries. All the transferred flaps survived. No vessel crisis occurred. Our patients demonstrated that volar veins can be the recip

The Observation of the Vein Distribution of a Partial Toe-Transfer Flaps with a Short Vascular Pedicle.

BACKGROUND: When performing partial toe-transfer flaps with a short vascular pedicle, as the flap becomes smaller, the likelihood of securing veins in the flap decreases. The purpose of this study was to clarify how frequently the partial toe-transfer flap with a short pedicle (free vascularized half-big toenail flap) contains veins and elucidate how frequently we can secure the veins with an artery via the first web space approach alone, using the Genial Viewer (a near-infrared light transmission imaging device). METHODS: We observed the dorsal vein images of the bilateral big toes of 250 vo

Pseudoaneurysm of the Dorsalis Pedis Artery: Case Report and Literature Review.

Aneurysms and pseudoaneurysms of the dorsalis pedis artery are rare vascular entities usually caused by traumatic injury or iatrogenic intervention, producing a focal soft pulsatile tissue mass in the dorsal foot. Gradual expansion of the fibrous capsule can produce secondary physical signs through the pressure exerted on surrounding structures. We report the case of a 57-year-old male with an idiopathic pseudoaneurysm of the dorsalis pedis artery. A focused history found a low-grade blunt trauma to the dorsal foot that had occurred 2 years previously. The diagnosis of a pseudoaneurysm was con

[Experience with the Hind Foot Relaxation Boot].

The goal of this paper is to report our experience with hindfoot fractures using our specially developed boot, with a follow-up of 557 cases. This boot works like the well-known Allgöwer-Röck ortheses (ARO), but is a hybrid between a boot and an orthesis. It allows full weightbearing without using crutches and completely protects an acutely operated hind foot fracture, hind foot arthrodesis or a hind foot fracture which is suitable for conservative treatment. In its first generation, this boot was custom made and used in 408 cases, from March 1999 to February 2011. This study was performed exc

3D Printing Technology in Planning Thumb Reconstructions with Second Toe Transplant.

OBJECTIVE: To report preoperative planning using 3D printing to plan thumb reconstructions with second toe transplant. METHODS: Between December 2013 and October 2015, the thumbs of five patients with grade 3 thumb defects were reconstructed using a wrap-around flap and second toe transplant aided by 3D printing technology. CT scans of hands and feet were analyzed using Boholo surgical simulator software (www.boholo.com). This allowed for the creation of a mirror image of the healthy thumb using the uninjured thumb. Using 3D images of the reconstructed thumb, a model of the big toe and the se

First Tarsometatarsal Arthrodesis: An Anatomic Evaluation of Dorsomedial Versus Plantar Plating.

Fusion of the first tarsometatarsal joint is a widely used procedure for the correction of hallux valgus deformity. Although dorsomedial H-shaped plating systems are being increasingly used, fusion can also be achieved by plantar plating. The goal of the present study was to compare these 2 operative techniques based on the anatomic considerations and show the potential pitfalls of both procedures. Six pairs of deep-frozen human lower legs were used in the present cadaveric study. In a randomized manner, either dorsomedial arthrodesis or plantar plating through a medial incision was performed.

Outcome of free digital artery perforator flap transfer for reconstruction of fingertip defects.

BACKGROUND: Fingertip defect can be treated with many flaps such as random pattern abdominal flap, retrograde digital artery island flap, V-Y advancement flap, etc. However, swelling in the fingertip, dysfunction of sensation, flexion and extension contracture or injury in the hemi-artery of the finger usually occurs during the recovery phase. Recently, digital artery perforator flaps have been used for fingertip reconstructions. With the development of super microsurgery techniques, free flaps can be more effective for sensory recovery and durability of the fingertip. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Lateral soft-tissue release through a medial incision: Anatomic comparison of two techniques.

BACKGROUND: The distal soft tissue procedure is an integral part of hallux valgus surgery, providing soft tissue balance and alignment restoration of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Various approaches have been established to this end. For techniques that do not include a separate dorsal incision, lateral release may be achieved via a transarticular approach or via a medial incision and a dorsal flap over the first metatarsal. Compared to the double-incision technique, these techniques are not only cosmetically superior and thus meet the demands of most surgeons and patients. MATERIAL AN
