BACKGROUND: Chronic Achilles tendon ruptures are associated with considerable functional morbidity. When treated operatively, debridement of degenerated tendon ends may create large defects. Various procedures to reconstruct large defects have been described. We present a simple technique in which an autologous semitendinosus tendon graft is used to reconstruct defects larger than 5 cm in chronic Achilles tendon ruptures. The purpose of this study was to describe our operative technique and its functional outcome.
METHODS: Achilles ruptures of more than 6 weeks duration were considered for th

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical and functional outcome of endoscopic-assisted reconstruction of chronic ruptures of the Achilles tendon using free hamstring tendon autograft.
METHODS: We present a case series of 15 patients who had chronic ruptures of the Achilles tendon (>6 weeks earlier) and underwent endoscopic-assisted reconstruction with a free hamstring autograft. The graft loop was passed through and fixed to the proximal stump of the tendon. The graft was then passed through suture to the distal stump and finally inserted into a tunnel in the anterior calcaneus to the Achilles tendo

INTRODUCTION: Many surgeries exist for treatment of insertional Achilles tendinopathy. Another surgical option to consider is an isolated gastrocnemius recession. Recent studies have demonstrated the success of a gastrocnemius recession for noninsertional Achilles tendinitis. We hypothesize that an isolated gastrocnemius recession can be a successful, effective, and less invasive surgery for patients with chronic insertional Achilles tendinopathy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article presents a retrospective review of one surgeon's results of 11 patients (2010-2012), with an average age of 59

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of immediate weight-bearing mobilisation with intensive rehabilitation on muscle strength and lower extremity functional level after endoscopy-assisted Achilles tendon repairs.
METHODS: After warming up for 5 min at a self-selected intensity on a stationary bike 32 male patients were tested for bilateral peak concentric isokinetic ankle dorsi- and plantar-flexor torque, passive range of motion for ankle joint, one-leg hop for distance, single-leg vertical jump height, Achilles Tendon Total Rupture Score, and perceived function using the

OBJECTIVE: Injuries can be a debilitating aspect of professional tennis. Injury rates and trends at the US Open Tennis Championships over multiple years are unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine injury trends in professional tennis players competing in a major professional tennis tournament between 1994 and 2009.
METHODS: From 1994 to 2009, injury data from the US Open Tennis Championships were recorded. Injuries were classified by location and type using terminology derived from a consensus statement developed specifically for tennis. Injury rates were determined based on the exp

UNLABELLED: Peroneal tendon dislocation with recurrent subluxation over the lateral malleolus, both acute and chronic, is well documented in the literature. However, there remains a subset of patients who report symptoms similar to peroneal subluxation that do not actually display active or passive displacement of the tendon over the lateral malleolus. In this article, we describe 7 patients who were followed prospectively for the treatment of ultrasound-confirmed, retrofibular, intrasheath subluxation without the typical lateral subluxation or dislocation of the tendon over the malleolus. Six

BACKGROUND: Treatment of Achilles tendon rupture has long been at the center of debate.
HYPOTHESIS: A new technique in surgical Achilles tendon repair allows for more stability and earlier rehabilitation.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: One hundred Achilles tendon rupture patients (70 men, 30 women; age range, 16-54 years; mean age, 32 years) were treated by a newly modified method of repair. Twenty-one of these patients were high-level athletes, and 79 were recreational-level athletes. The average length of follow-up was 2.4 years (range, 1-6.3 years), and none of

BACKGROUND: Separation of tendon ends after Achilles tendon repair may affect the tendon repair process and lead to postoperative end-range plantarflexion weakness.
HYPOTHESIS: Patients will have disproportionate end-range plantarflexion weakness after Achilles tendon repair.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study.
METHODS: Four-strand core suture repairs of Achilles tendon were performed on 1 female and 19 male patients. Postoperatively, patients were nonweightbearing with the ankle immobilized for 4 weeks. Plantarflexion torque, dorsiflexion range of motion, passive joint stiffness, t

Results of mechanical analyses of running may be helpful in the search for the etiology of running injuries. In this study a mechanical analysis was made of the landing phase of three trained heel-toe runners, running at their preferred speed and style. The body was modeled as a system of seven linked rigid segments, and the positions of markers defining these segments were monitored using 200 Hz video analysis. Information about the ground reaction force vector was collected using a force plate. Segment kinematics were combined with ground reaction force data for calculation of the net inters
