INTRODUCTION: Patient with poliomyelitis can have long-term sequelae such as paralysis and muscle weakness in their lower limb caused by motor atrophy and degradation of motor and autonomic neurons. Patients can also develop osteoporosis, causing instability. This leads to a greater risk of falls and fractures, such as hip fractures. There are difficulties and risks in doing management, especially doing total hip arthroplasty (THA) in poliomyelitis patients due to differences in anatomy and function of the lower limb.
CASE REPORT: A 70-year-old woman came to the hospital with pain in her left

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests a close association between circulating micronutrient levels and neuroimmune diseases. Nevertheless, the causal relationship between them remains unclear. Furthermore, due to confounding factors, many micronutrients implicated in these diseases remain unidentified. This study aimed to determine the causal relationship between circulating micronutrients and neuroimmune diseases through genetic association analysis, and to analyze the regulatory role of circulating micronutrients in neuroimmune diseases.
METHOD: In this study, we used a two-sample mendelian

PURPOSE: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in patients with sequelae of poliomyelitis is a surgical challenge due to muscle weakness, bone deformities or post-polio syndrome (PPS). Few data exist to determine the factors contributing to poor functional results. This study aimed: (1) to describe a cohort of patients with poliomyelitis sequelae who underwent TKA; (2) to examine risk factors for poor functional outcome.
METHODS: A monocentric retrospective cohort study of all patients with poliomyelitis sequelae who underwent TKA between January 2006 and December 2019. Clinical, functional outcomes,

INTRODUCTION: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) in patients with residual poliomyelitis (RP) is a surgical challenge. Dysplastic morphology, osteoporosis and gluteal weakness hinder orientation, increase fracture risk and reduce implant stability. The aim of this study is to describe a series of patients with RP treated by THA.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective descriptive study of patients with RP treated with THA between 1999 and 2021 in a tertiary hospital, with clinical and radiological follow-up and functional and complication evaluation until present or death, with a minimum of 12months.

AIMS: Knowledge on total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) in patients with a history of poliomyelitis is limited. This study compared implant survivorship and clinical outcomes among affected and unaffected limbs in patients with sequelae of poliomyelitis undergoing TKAs.
METHODS: A retrospective review of our total joint registry identified 94 patients with post-polio syndrome undergoing 116 primary TKAs between January 2000 and December 2019. The mean age was 70 years (33 to 86) with 56% males (n = 65) and a mean BMI of 31 kg/m2 (18 to 49). Rotating hinge TKAs were used in 14 of 63 affected limbs

BACKGROUND: Poliomyelitis is an infectious disease of the peripheral motor neurons, which predominantly affects children and causes residual palsies. Because of the oral poliomyelitis vaccination started in Germany in 1960 and 1962 and the following rapid decline of the incidence of this infection, the postpolio syndrome in Germany is a disease of older people.
METHODS: Since 2008, we have offered a poliomyelitis outpatient consultation at the Center of Geriatrics, Protestant Hospital Göttingen-Weende and have treated 33 patients.
RESULTS: The spectrum of persistent deficits after poliomyeli

PURPOSE: Following far advancement of modern medicine and technology, functional disability in a certain type of sequelae of poliomyelitis may be effectively improved.
METHODS: Eight consecutive adult patients with unilateral sequelae of poliomyelitis were treated. These patients had shortened lower extremity of an average of 4.8 cm (range, 4.0-5.5 cm) in the lesion side. Muscle power of the ipsilateral knee was nearly intact (grade 4 or 5) but the ankle extension was completely flaccid. The tibia was osteotomized and lengthened with external fixation. Consequently, all external fixators were

A 63-year-old man presented with an asymptomatic infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm. He had scoliosis and atrophic right leg change as sequelae of poliomyelitis. The patient was not a candidate for endovascular aneurysm repair because of anatomic unsuitability. An open surgical repair was performed by the retroperitoneal approach because of severe scoliosis and left lateral aneurysm deviation. To minimize contralateral exposure, the Viabahn stent graft (W. L. Gore & Associates, Flagstaff, Ariz) was inserted in the right external iliac artery and anastomosed with the right expanded polytetraf

There are many techniques for limb lengthening. Lengthening over a plate is an alternative choice of fixation in children or when nailing is difficult. We present a new technique for tibial lengthening with using a monolateral external fixator over a lengthening plate.Lengthening over an intramedullary nail is a commonly used method in patients with short stature or limb-length discrepancy. However, in patients with a narrow and excessively sclerotic intramedullary cavity in the pediatric age group where the skeletal system has not yet fully developed, difficulties have been observed in length

OBJECTIVE: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a painful and disabling syndrome in which the patient presents with neuropathic pain, edema, or vasomotor or pseudomotor abnormalities that are often refractory to treatment. Polio paralysis is caused by the damage or destruction of motor neurons in the spine, which lead to corresponding muscle paralysis. This report is a case report on the application of a pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) current to dorsal root ganglia (DRG) for the treatment of CRPS type 1 in an adolescent patient.
DESIGN: Single case report.
SETTING: Selcuk University Hospita

OBJECTIVE: To determine if coenzyme Q(10) alleviates fatigue in the late-onset sequelae of poliomyelitis.
DESIGN: Parallel-group, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
BACKGROUND SETTING: Coenzyme Q(10) has been shown to boost muscle energy metabolism in post-polio subjects but it does not promote muscle strength, endurance or function in polio survivors with post-poliomyelitis syndrome. However, the collective increased energy metabolism might contribute to a reduction in post-polio fatigue.
PARTICIPANTS: Polio survivors from the Australian post-polio networks in Queensland and New South W

BACKGROUND: Polio infection can often lead to orthopedic complications such as arthritis, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, skeletal deformation, and chronic instability of the joints. The purpose of this study was to assess the outcomes and associated complications of arthroplasty in shoulders with sequelae of poliomyelitis.
METHODS: Seven patients (average age, 70 years) were treated between 1976 and 2013 with shoulder arthroplasty for the sequelae of polio. One patient underwent reverse shoulder arthroplasty, 2 had a hemiarthroplasty, and 4 had total shoulder arthroplasty. Average follow-up w

Isolated coronal fracture of medial femoral condyle with intact lateral femoral condyle is extremely rare. A high index of suspicion is necessary for early diagnosis especially in cases of undisplaced fractures. Here we report a case of medial Hoffa fracture in a post-polio limb presenting as chronic pain. Management of such fractures in limbs affected by late sequelae of poliomyelitis is particularly problematic in view of osteoporosis and osseous hypoplasia. The fracture was approached through medial parapatellar arthrotomy and fixation was done with cannulated cancellous screws in anteropos
