Restless legs syndrome in patients with sequelae of poliomyelitis.

BACKGROUND: No studies have examined the association between RLS and the sequelae of poliomyelitis (PM). We studied the frequency and severity of RLS in a group of consecutive patients with the sequelae of poliomyelitis (PM) and the effect of treatment with dopaminergic drugs. METHODS: A diagnosis of RLS was made according to the criteria of the International RLS Study Group, and severity was assessed by the RLS rating scale. Information on sex, age, age at onset, site affected by PM, disease duration of PM, and history of post-polio syndrome (pPS) was obtained in a cohort of 52 PM patients.

Lung function in post-poliomyelitis syndrome: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: To compare lung function between patients with post-poliomyelitis syndrome and those with sequelae of paralytic poliomyelitis (without any signs or symptoms of post-poliomyelitis syndrome), as well as between patients with post-poliomyelitis syndrome and healthy controls. METHODS: Twenty-nine male participants were assigned to one of three groups: control; poliomyelitis (comprising patients who had had paralytic poliomyelitis but had not developed post-poliomyelitis syndrome); and post-poliomyelitis syndrome. Volunteers underwent lung function measurements (spirometry and respirato

Tibial lengthening using a humeral intramedullary nail combined with a single-plane external fixator for leg discrepancy in sequelae of poliomyelitis.

The sequelae of poliomyelitis are the common causes of leg discrepancy. Tibial lengthening is an effective way to solve this problem but it is associated with a high rate of complications. In this study, we combined the use of humeral nail and external fixator in tibial lengthening with the purpose of reducing lengthening complications. Compared with the cases lengthened by a single-plane external fixator alone, this combined strategy was found to be beneficial in maintaining the tibial alignment. Therefore, it can be recommended as a good technique for tibial lengthening in patients with sequ

Management of a neglected femoral neck fracture in a limb affected by poliomyelitis - a case report.

Neglected femoral neck fractures are difficult to treat successfully without resorting to total hip arthroplasty. Baksi described a tensor fascia lata muscle pedicle bone graft procedure for such cases. Management of such fractures following poliomyelitis presents additional challenges. We present a case of a neglected femoral neck fracture in a young adult with late sequelae of poliomyelitis managed by Baksi's procedure. At final follow up at 2 years the patient was able to walk without aids and had returned to his job.

OBJECTIVES: To study the severity and 5-year course of fatigue in patients with late-onset sequelae of poliomyelitis (LOSP) and to identify physical and psychosocial determinants of fatigue. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study with 5 measurements over 5 years. SETTING: University hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with LOSP (N=168); 89% of the subjects completed the study. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Fatigue assessed with the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). The role of pantalar arthrodesis in the treatment of paralytic foot deformities. Surgical technique.

BACKGROUND: Pantalar arthrodesis is considered by many to be the final operative option before amputation for the treatment of paralytic foot deformities. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term results of pantalar arthrodesis with regard to its impact on the adjacent joints and the walking ability of patients with paralytic foot deformities. METHODS: Twenty-four patients (seventeen men and seven women) who underwent a one-stage pantalar arthrodesis between 1953 and 1973 for the treatment of sequelae of poliomyelitis were reevaluated. All patients underwent a physical and r

Tibial lengthening over humeral and tibial intramedullary nails in patients with sequelae of poliomyelitis: a comparative study.

Leg discrepancy is common after poliomyelitis. Tibial lengthening is an effective way to solve this problem. It is believed lengthening over a tibial intramedullary nail can provide a more comfortable lengthening process than by the conventional technique. However, patients with sequelae of poliomyelitis typically have narrow intramedullary canals allowing limited space for inserting a tibial intramedullary nail and Kirschner wires. To overcome this problem, we tried using humeral nails instead of tibial nails in the lengthening procedure. In this study, we used humeral nails in 20 tibial leng

Aging and sequelae of poliomyelitis.

OBJECTIVE: We estimate that there are about 50,000 persons who survived poliomyelitis in their childhood in France (mean age estimated between 50 and 65 years). After a few decades of stability, 30 to 65% of individuals who had been infected and recovered from polio begin to experience new signs and symptoms. METHOD: Review of the literature on Pubmed with the following keywords "Poliomyelitis" and "Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS)". RESULTS: These new signs and symptoms are characterized by muscular atrophy (decreased muscle mass), muscle weakness and fatigue, muscle and/or joint pain. All these s

Patients with sequelae of poliomyelitis. Does the anesthetic technique impose risks?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Several questions arise before performing neuro-axis block in patients with sequelae of poliomyelitis. Reports in the literature are scarce. The objective of this study was to describe the anesthetic techniques used in patients undergoing surgeries and possible complications. METHODS: We undertook a retrospective study of patients with sequelae of poliomyelitis who underwent surgeries during a five-year period. Demographic data, physical status (ASA), onset of the disease, body part affected, diagnosis of post-poliomyelitis syndrome, surgeries and type anesthesia us

Insidious phrenic nerve involvement in postpolio syndrome.

A 49-year-old woman with amyotrophic sequelae of poliomyelitis experienced progressive left upper limb weakness and breathing discomfort while walking that had developed over one year prior to presentation. She had flaccid quadriplegia which was more marked in the left upper limb, with the C4- and C5-innervated muscles being most severely affected. Chest radiographs double exposed at maximal inspiration and expiration revealed poor respiratory movements in the left hemidiaphragm. Phrenic nerve conduction study demonstrated conspicuous diaphragmatic paralysis on the left side. The electrophysio

Results in the treatment of paralytic calcaneus-valgus feet with the Westin technique.

Between 1988 and 2003, 23 patients with paralytic calcaneus-valgus feet were submitted to the Westin procedure and 17 patients (25 feet) were re-evaluated. Nine patients were male and eight were female. The mean age at the surgical procedure was 8+/-5 years. The aetiology of paralysis was sequelae of poliomyelitis in 6 patients (8 feet) and of myelomeningocele in 11 patients (17 feet). The mean follow-up period was 6+/-6 years. The results were analysed clinically and radiographically considering the decrease of the retropulsion, the patient's satisfaction, and the increase of the lateral tibi

[Post-polyiomyelitis syndrome].

Postpoliomyelitis syndrome is a clinical syndrome characterized by late progression of symptoms, neuromuscular weakness, fatigue and pain, several (more than 20) Years after acute anterior poliomyelitis. In the United States, where it has been mainly described, frequency is estimated between 20 and 30p.100 in patients with sequelae of poliomyelitis. Although the cause is still unknown, postpoliomyelitis syndrome is likely due to degeneration and dysfunction of terminal axons of enlarged post-polio units, with a possible role of inflammatory reaction driven by persistence of the polio virus.
