Comparison of unisegment and multisegment foot models in ankle biomechanics and distal foot power calculations in individuals with a partial foot amputation.

Multisegment foot models (MFMs) provide a more detailed assessment of foot biomechanics than conventional unisegment foot models (UFMs), yet their added value in individuals with a partial foot amputation remains unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the modified Oxford MFM to a conventional UFM during the stance phase of walking in individuals with a partial foot amputation. Fourteen adults with toe(s) or ray(s) amputation underwent an instrumented gait analysis using force plates and a three-dimensional motion capture system. Joint angles, moments and power were calculated using inve

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation with blood flow restriction shows preliminary effects on abductor hallucis muscle size and toe flexor strength: a pilot randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) combined with blood flow restriction (BFR) on abductor hallucis (ABH) cross-sectional area (CSA) compared with NMES alone in a pilot randomized controlled trial. Toe flexor strength (TFS) and foot posture were also examined as secondary and exploratory outcomes, respectively. METHODS: Thirty participants were randomly allocated to either an NMES + BFR group or an NMES-alone group. Both groups received 15 min of ABH NMES three times weekly for 6 weeks, while the NMES + BFR group additionally received BFR. ABH CSA, T

Composite graft survival in allen zone II fingertip amputations: Independent predictors of graft failure.

BACKGROUND: Composite grafting is a commonly used treatment option for Allen Zone II fingertip amputations; however, reported survival rates vary considerably across studies. Although several clinical and injury-related factors have been suggested to influence graft survival, independent predictors of failure and clinically meaningful ischemia duration thresholds remain insufficiently defined. This study aimed to identify independent clinical predictors of composite graft survival and to explore, secondarily, whether ischemia duration is associated with graft failure. METHODS: Forty-two patie

Medial Plantar Proper Digital Nerve Thickening - a Sonographic Finding in Volunteers Without Joplin's Neuroma.

Thickening of the medial plantar proper digital nerve (MPPDN) along the medial aspect of the big toe is frequently observed incidentally during high-resolution ultrasound examinations in asymptomatic individuals. However, the clinical significance of these findings remains unclear, as no study has definitively linked them to symptoms. Although the localization and visualization of the medial plantar nerve using ultrasound have been documented, its cross-sectional area has not yet been utilized to assess thickening at this specific site. The study aimed to assess the frequency and specific loca

Sensory Survey 3D: an open source utility for the annotation of projected fields for sensory neural interfaces.

One goal of neuroprosthetics is to restore sensation to those who have lost it due to disease or injury. This is often accomplished with electrical stimulation of nervous tissue. Common approaches to quantifying evoked sensations for somatosensory prostheses involve asking participants to draw or annotate flattened, 2-dimensional (2D) representations of body parts, a process that can distort the true nature of the 3-dimensional (3D) projected fields. In particular, patches of skin between the fingers and toes or at the edge of the wrist often go unrepresented in 2D, leaving them unquantified.

Ventral Surface Microanatomy of the Raptor Pes Is Most Strongly Linked to Prey Size and Diet Rather Than Phylogeny in Australian Species.

The ventral microstructures on the digits of birds are comprised of reticulate scales. This epidermal structure presents as cornified papillae, rather than the typical flattened scutellate scales (scutes) found on the dorsal surfaces of the tarsus and toes. Reticulate scales are likely functionally important structures, particularly for predatory species when capturing prey with their feet, as they serve as the initial contact interface between a bird and an object. These scales are found only on the plantar surface of feet and digits, and as such these structures offer a unique avenue of enqu

Joint Pain Outcomes After Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in Patients With and Without Hypermobility.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity increases the risk of musculoskeletal conditions, but retrospective studies have suggested that individuals with joint hypermobility experience more joint pain after metabolic and bariatric surgery and weight loss. Joint hypermobility is the ability of one or more joints to move beyond the normal range of motion. This study prospectively investigated postoperative joint pain and its association with joint hypermobility. METHODS: A survey including the 5-Part Questionnaire (5PQ) and a self-developed joint pain questionnaire was completed prior to and 1 year after metabolic a

Impact of Psychosocial intervention on Quality of life in patients with post- traumatic limb amputation/s: a randomized controlled trial: Psychosocial care in post-traumatic amputees.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma results in approximately 1.19 million deaths and 20-50 million disabilities globally each year. With increasing industrialization, road traffic injuries have become a leading cause of Disability Adjusted Life Years and traumatic amputations. These sudden amputations often lead to significant psychological distress. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in enhancing the Quality of Life of post-traumatic amputees. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This randomized controlled trial enrolled 74 post-traumatic extremity amputees aged over 18 years, who w

Patients with Achilles Tendinopathy Show Reduced Intratendinous Sliding during Dynamic Exercises.

PURPOSE: Intratendinous sliding, that is, nonuniform motions between the superficial and deep layers of the Achilles tendon, is reduced in individuals with Achilles tendinopathy compared with healthy controls during isometric contractions. Previous work has shown that intratendinous sliding can be increased by performing isometric contractions with a horizontally outward-rotated ("toes-out") foot position. The purpose of this study was to compare intratendinous sliding between healthy individuals and patients with Achilles tendinopathy during dynamic exercises, and to determine the effect of a

Risk score for lower-limb amputation and its ability to predict major kidney and cardiovascular events in people with type 1 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: To develop a 10-year risk score to predict lower-limb amputation (LLA) in individuals with type 1 diabetes, and to assess whether this score also predicts kidney failure, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS: The LLA risk score was derived from GENEDIAB and GENESIS, two prospective French and Belgian cohorts of 828 individuals with type 1 diabetes. External validation was assessed in SURGENE, an independent cohort of 247 individuals with type 1 diabetes. LLA was defined as a non-traumatic amputation above the metatarsophalangeal joint, kidney failure as the need for renal rep

Comparative Outcomes of Percutaneous Needle Tenotomy Performed by a Podiatrist Versus an Orthopaedic Surgeon in the Management of Toe Ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Foot ulceration is a debilitating and often disabling complication of diabetes mellitus, with negative prognostic associations in terms of morbidity and mortality. Percutaneous needle tenotomy (PNT) is increasingly recognized as a safe, minimally invasive procedure for treating tendon-related deformities, including mechanical forefoot ulceration. This study evaluated clinical outcomes of needle flexor tenotomies performed by a podiatrist versus an orthopaedic surgeon. METHODS: This service evaluation reviewed consecutive adult patients with foot ulceration who received needle teno

Photo-based individual identification is more reliable than visible implant elastomer tags or toe-tipping in young agile frogs.

In amphibian capture-recapture studies, commonly used individual-identification methods include toe clipping as well as less invasive alternatives of varying cost. Yet, choosing the best method for a study is challenging, because both the reliability for identification and the severity of adverse effects of a given mark type can greatly vary between species as well as life stages. We compared the reliability of three identification methods in young agile frogs (Rana dalmatina): clipping a single phalanx, injecting visible-implant-elastomer (VIE) tags (one of six colours) under the skin, and ph
