Vascular and Osteological Morphology of Expanded Digit Tips Suggests Specialization in the Wandering Salamander (Aneides vagrans).

For over a century researchers have marveled at the square-shaped toe tips of several species of climbing salamanders (genus Aneides), speculating about the function of large blood sinuses therein. Wandering salamanders (Aneides vagrans) have been reported to exhibit exquisite locomotor control while climbing, jumping, and gliding high (88 m) within the redwood canopy; however, a detailed investigation of their digital vascular system has yet to be conducted. Here, we describe the vascular and osteological structure of, and blood circulation through, the distal regions of the toes of A. vagran

Effectiveness of Perioperative Finger Sensory Rehabilitation in Patients Undergoing Fingertip Amputation and Reimplantation: A Retrospective Study.

AIM: Finger reimplantation is an effective method for the treatment of amputated fingertips. However, there are several shortcomings in traditional postoperative rehabilitation programs, which may affect a patient's functional recovery after surgery. Finger sensory rehabilitation is a comprehensive program that helps patients restore sensory and motor function to their fingers through the use of specific training methods and equipment. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the effect of finger sensory rehabilitation on a group of patients who had undergone fingertip amputation and reimplantation.

Exposed digits increase weight bearing and alter sub-bandage pressures in dogs with forelimb splints.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to evaluate the difference in weight bearing in a toes-in splint versus a toes-out forelimb splint and to determine the difference in sub-bandage pressures between the groups. We hypothesized that (1) weight bearing would not be different between the 2 splints and that (2) sub-bandage pressures would be distributed higher on the distal digits in the toes-out splint and pressures would be more evenly distributed across the paw in the toes-in splint. METHODS: In this controlled crossover trial, a random forelimb of 10 healthy dogs was bandaged with a splint

Relationship between floating toe score and performance in track and field athletes.

This study explored the relationship between floating toes and athletic performance among collegiate track and field athletes. A total of 422 athletes (sprinters, jumpers, and distance runners) and 136 controls participated in this study. Plantar surface images were captured using a specially designed foot scanner during standing to calculate the floating toe score. The score, which sums the floating toe points of all toes, categorizes them into 'floating toe', 'incomplete contact', or 'normal toe'. The World Athletics score served as a measure of athletic performance. Overall, collegiate trac

Impact of single versus dual arterial supply on perfusion and function in finger replantation after complex hand injuries.

Finger amputations following complex hand injuries (CHI) pose a significant challenge in hand surgery due to severe tissue trauma and neurovascular damage, necessitating precise arterial repair. While restoring arterial perfusion is critical, it remains unclear whether reconstructing both proper palmar digital arteries is required for optimal outcomes. This study evaluates whether restoring one or both arteries in finger replantation after complex injuries impacts perfusion and overall outcomes. In this retrospective, cross-sectional, follow-up study, we investigated patients with finger amput

Toe Polydactyly and Supernumerary Nipple: Broadening the Phenotypic Spectrum of STAR Syndrome.

STAR syndrome is a very rare X-linked dominant disorder characterized by the association of toe syndactyly, facial dysmorphism including telecanthus and a broad nasal tip, and anogenital and renal malformations. We hereby report a patient with a novel frameshift mutation in CCNQ, the STAR syndrome causative gene. More importantly, the patient presented hitherto unreported clinical features, namely toe polydactyly in addition to syndactyly, and a supernumerary nipple. This nineteenth reported case further broadens the phenotypic spectrum of STAR syndrome.

Complex Limb Injuries: Limb Salvage Versus Amputation-A Mini Review and Meta-Analysis.

Introduction: The management of complex limb injuries can be very challenging, and it demands a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. Amputation and limb reconstruction are the two options that clinicians must choose. This study aims to comprehensively synthesize existing tools and resources from the literature that can assist clinicians in the decision-making process. Evaluation: The initial resuscitation and the prehospital care are the first important steps in the management of these injuries, while the immediate transfer to trauma centers is recommended for complex cases. After the stab

Long Term Outcomes After Flexor Tendon Tenotomy of the Diabetic Foot.

BACKGROUND: Hammertoes is one if not the most common deformity that afflicts the diabetic foot and leads to increased risk of diabetic foot ulcers. Flexor tendon tenotomy treatment of the diabetic hammertoe has gained increased interest and is now recommended in international guidelines as a treatment of hammertoes to prevent diabetic foot ulcers. There is however no published data on the long term outcomes following tenotomy treatment. INTRODUCTION: The objectives of this study was to describe the demographics and long-term outcomes following tenotomy treatment of individuals with diabetes w

Effect of Repetitive Loading from 5 km of Running on Plantar Pressure in Healthy Young Participants.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive loading during running is associated with the occurrence of running injuries. Several previous studies have assessed plantar pressure before, during, and after running. However, the difference in plantar pressure before and after 5 km of running has not been investigated. A 5-km running distance can be easily achieved by novice and recreational runners. There is evidence that novice runners are more likely to experience injuries from running compared with experienced runners. This study aimed to examine changes in plantar pressure before and after 5 km of running. METHO

Surgical Treatment of Digital Papillary Adenocarcinoma: A Systematic Review.

Digital papillary adenocarcinoma (DPA) is a rare malignant tumor of eccrine sweat glands, primarily affecting fingers or toes. Currently, there is no established consensus on optimal treatment. Our study compares recurrence rates following various surgical treatments for DPA, including excision, digit amputation, and Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS). A systematic review conducted in June 2024 examined PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. The primary search terms included "DPA" and "aggressive digital papillary adenocarcinoma". Included studies required a histologically confirme

Validation of Parental Reports in Assessing Idiopathic Toe Walking Using Quantitative In-Shoe Device Measurements.

BACKGROUND: Toe walking is prevalent among children, affecting 5% to 24% of the pediatric population. Clinicians rely on parental reports of frequency of toe walking to guide clinical decision making and outcomes assessment. However, recall accuracy and differing environments challenge the reliability of parental reports. This study aims to validate parental reports against quantitative in-shoe device measurements (NURVV/RUN). METHODS: Twenty children with persistent idiopathic toe walking (ITWp) (mean age: 9.6y; 13 males, 7 females) from 8 pediatric orthopaedic specialty care sites participa

Low multiscale entropy of ankle joint position during toe gait in children with cerebral palsy is related to contracture development.

BACKGROUND: Toe walking in children with cerebral palsy is typically less stable and less energy-efficient than plantigrade walking in typically developing children. We hypothesized that children with cerebral palsy may, nevertheless, show more stable toe walking due to the development of contractures compared to age-matched typically developing children. METHODS: Multiscale entropy of the vertical position of the ankle joint was used to measure ankle joint stability during the stance phase of walking. Kinematic data were obtained from 37 children with spastic cerebral palsy and habitual toe

Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface Surgery to Treat Chronic Postamputation Pain: A Prospective Study in Major Lower Limb Amputation Patients.

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to assess the postsurgical outcomes of regenerative peripheral nerve interface (RPNI) surgery in a prospective cohort of major lower extremity amputation patients with chronic postamputation pain. BACKGROUND: Chronic pain in lower limb amputation patients is commonly the result of neuroma formation after traumatic peripheral nerve injury. By implanting more proximal transected nerve ends into autologous free muscle grafts, RPNI surgery can treat postamputation pain by diminishing the development of neuromas. RPNI surgery in prior retrospective studies has been sho
