OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess quality of life (QOL) and life satisfaction among women with physical disabilities or breast cancer, and to identify factors predictive of QOL and life satisfaction for women and men. QOL and life satisfaction differences were examined between women and men with physical disabilities and cancer, and between women with traumatic and chronic physical conditions.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional design employing several QOL and life satisfaction measures was used.

We investigated age-related changes in the distribution of body weight on soles of feet in 878 healthy subjects ranging from 5 to 80 years of age. DESIGN: Retrospective review of patients identified in a search of two trauma registries for the years 1984-1994.
SETTING: Two pediatric level one trauma centers in one metropolitan area.

A consecutive series of 89 patients (95 limbs) with gangrene were operated on with amputation of toes or some distal part of the foot after arterial reconstruction. 43 patients had diabetes. Healing was achieved in 81/82 feet when the reconstruction was open. Amputation below or above the knee was required in 4/5 limbs when the reconstruction failed. 8 patients died before healing. The median time to healing was 30 (17-452) days, after a single amputation, and 115 (36-466) days, when more than one procedure had been necessary. We studied two human subjects with total deafferentation of one upper limb secondary to traumatic multiple cervical root avulsions. UNLABELLED: Nine patients were treated for complex tibial pilon and talus fractures or non unions from 1990 to 1997 using intramedullary nails introduced through the calcaneus.
