60 patients with essential thrombocythemia (ET) have been retrospectively and prospectively followed from 1974 through 1987. Four cases are described wherein massive centrifugal trauma caused a whirl-whiplash type injury to the spinal cord resulting in paralysis. Two patients became paraplegics and two quadriplegics. In three cases, there was a loss of one or more limbs associated with other concomitant injuries. Attention is focused on the problems facing patients with a combination of plegias and amputation.

This descriptive study reports on 17 children who had undergone open-heart surgery. The children were assessed for 6 hours after surgery and once at 18 hours after operation to determine relationship between two scales assessing peripheral perfusion and the temperature of the great toe. Farm-related trauma occurs in more than 25,000 children per year with almost 300 patients dying from these preventable injuries. The incidence of associated farm-machinery injuries and fatalities is increasing at an alarming rate with the majority occurring in young boys during the summer months. To clarify the role the flexor tendon to extensor hood transfer (Girdlestone-Taylor procedure) may have in correction of clawtoes in myelodysplasia, 20 patients with residual paralysis from myelomeningocele who underwent the procedure between 1976 and 1985 were reviewed. We have specifically examined warm and cool sensitivities in 60 diabetic and 43 nondiabetic individuals. A retrospective study of 55 patients with congenital constriction band syndrome was performed. Multiple extremity involvement was found to be the most common clinical feature associated with the disease, and 34% of the patients studied were premature at birth. Thirty patients with 39 recurrent interdigital neuromas were evaluated to determine the success of subsequent surgery. Two surgical techniques were used to resect the nerve over a 2.5-year period and their results were compared. The trimmed-toe transfer is a new modification of the existing great-toe transfer technique for thumb reconstruction. This procedure was devised to circumvent patient concerns regarding overly large reconstructed digits following total great-toe-to-hand transfer. We have witnessed six cases of the hair-thread tourniquet syndrome, an entity characterized by strangulation of an appendage (toes, fingers, or external genitalia) by hair or hair-like fibers in the pediatric population. When an ingrown toenail is unresponsive to simple treatment methods, surgical treatment options are available. At our institution, 100 patients with 142 affected toes were surgically treated by one of five techniques and observed for a mean of 9.7 years (range, 7.8 to 10.0 years).
