Change of the surface temperature of the leg during open-heart-surgery was determined in five patients, in whom either side of the femoral artery was ligated for cannulation. While the surface temperature at the patella was least influenced, that at the ankle paralleled closely the changes in the core body temperature and blood supply to the leg. Two large series of civilian-incurred (212) and combat-incurred (228) tibial shaft fractures are compared. Closed tibial fractures were treated by closed manipulation and weight bearing ambulation in a long leg plaster cast. Acquired hallux varus deformity of either the static or the dynamic type results from surgery to correct hallux valgus deformity and the accompanying bunion. The dynamic type is disfiguring, uncomfortable, and disappointing to the patient and surgeon alike. Linear as well as rotational forces are at work to produce the deformity. A method of obtaining pure sensory nerve conduction velocities in the lower extremities is described. This involves the use of electronic summation (signal averaging). Potentials were obtained and velocities calculated from all normal subjects examined. In patients with peripheral neuropathies it was often possible to obtain nerve velocities with signal amplitudes as low as 0·1 μV and these were often slower than those obtained from the normal subjects. An electrophysiological study has been made of extensor digitorum brevis muscles in 19 boys with Duchenne dystrophy. The isometric twitches of the dystrophic muscles developed less tension and were usually slower than those in controls.
