A retrospective study on the clinical features of skin lesions in Chinese acquired digital fibrokeratoma patients.

BACKGROUND: Acquired digital fibrokeratoma (ADFK) is an uncommon benign fibro-epithelioma, which is rarely reported in China. AIMS: To analysis the clinical features of ADFK in Chinese people from current cases. METHODS: From December 2019 to October 2021, there were 21 patients diagnosed with ADFK, we made a retrospective analysis on the clinical features of skin lesions in them. To summarize the clinical morphology, location, and surgical follow-up of ADFK. RESULTS: We concluded that ADFK is more common in females than males on the hands (7:3), while the male-to-female ratio is largely th

Comparative Study of Digital Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Giant, Standard, and Miniature Schnauzers.

UNLABELLED: In schnauzers, a breed predisposition to squamous cell carcinoma of the digit (dSCC) is well known. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and macroscopic findings of dSCCs in giant (GSs), standard (SSs), and miniature schnauzers (MSs). METHODS: Pathology reports of 478 dSCCs from 417 schnauzers (227 GSs, 174 SSs, and 16 MSs) were retrospectively evaluated. RESULTS: The MSs were older than the SSs and GSs (p ≤ 0.01). The male GSs were predisposed to dSCC (p < 0.05). In the GSs, the nodular dSCCs were larger than in the MSs (p ≤ 0.05) and SSs (p ≤ 0.001). The digital SC

Composite graft repair in distal finger injuries: emergency room or operating room?

BACKGROUND: Fingertip amputations are common injuries presenting to the emergency room. However, all amputations do not have a chance of replantation, and composite graft is among the salvage treatments in this case. This treatment is both easy to apply and economical. Our study compares the success and cost of composite grafting in the emergency and operating rooms. METHODS: Thirty-six patients who met the criteria were included in the study. The decision on the repair site was made by the sur-geon according to patient compliance and the intensity of the emergency clinic. Demographic and dis

A meta-analysis of the validity of the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task in predicting young children's academic performance.

The present study represents the first meta-analytic synthesis of the utility of a widely used early-childhood self-regulation measure, the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task, in predicting children's academic achievement. A systematic review of the literature yielded 69 studies accessed from peer reviewed journals representing 413 effect sizes and 19,917 children meeting the complete set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Robust variance analysis demonstrated that the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulders task was a consistent predictor of children's academic achievement across literacy, oral language, and

The heart-lung machine in major limb replantation: Report of two cases.

Replantation of amputated limbs after long ischemic hours almost always comes with reperfusion syndrome and poor outcomes. An ischemic time of greater than 6 h is often considered unsuitable for major limb replantation. However, usage of extracorporeal perfusion has been shown to prolong the viability of major limbs in animal studies. The aim of this report is to show that extracorporeal perfusion with cardiopulmonary bypass machine (CPBM) is a safe and reliable technique in improving limb survival as illustrated by our cases. We report two cases of successful major limb replantation with late

Functional and patient-reported outcomes following single digit replantation: A systematic literature review.

OBJECTIVES: Finger amputations can involve different levels of injury complexity, and the success of a finger replantation is further shaped by a variety of factors, including patient characteristics, surgical technique, and postoperative rehabilitation. These variables may interact in complex ways and contribute to heterogeneity that makes it challenging to guide management for individual patients. As such, this systematic review seeks review the outcomes of isolated single digit replantation and compare patient reported outcomes following revision amputation to guide decision making. METHOD

Effect of multiple-digit replantation in patients with amputated digits.

PURPOSE: The replantation of multiple amputated digits is a technically challenging procedure for reconstructive surgeons that requires more time than the replantation of a single digit. We evaluated the effect of multiple-digit replantation on the success of digital replantation. METHODS: Patients who experienced digital amputation and underwent digital replantation from January 2018 to December 2021 were studied retrospectively. Patients who experienced successful and failed replantation were compared, as were digits that survived or became necrotic after replantation. A multivariate logist

Bone Shortening After Amputation: A Report of Two Cases.

We report two cases of shortening of the bone at the stump after amputation. Case 1 was a 57-year-old male with a traumatic transhumeral amputation. The remaining humerus had shortened by 3.5 cm in eight months. Case 2 was a 27-year-old male with a traumatic transtibial amputation. The remaining tibia had shortened by 1.4 cm in 72 months. These two cases had the same cause of amputation, but the amputation site, age, and time course differed. Few studies have examined the bone length of stumps after amputation. The bone length of stumps is generally assumed to not change after amputation. Howe

Is self-inflicted amputation to the upper extremity a contraindication to replantation?

PURPOSE: Contraindications to replantation include severe medical or psychiatric comorbidities. Recently, authors have suggested that due to the improving therapeutic options for patients with psychiatric decompensation, this should no longer be listed as a contraindication to replantation. Despite this, authors continue to list severe psychiatric comorbidities as a contraindication to replantation. This case series and review of the literature discusses this complex topic and provides recommendations regarding the management of patients following upper extremity self-inflicted amputations. M

The new bone WB-SPECT/CT: hybrid, from head-to-toe and digital! Is it worth the effort?

INTRODUCTION: A bone scan (BS) plays a pivotal role in many oncological and non-oncological conditions. The planar BS is characterized by high sensitivity but low specificity. With respect to planar imaging, the implementation of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) has allowed increased image contrast and more accurate tracer localization. AREAS COVERED: Recent technological innovations in the field of BS are treated, with a particular focus on multi-field-of-view devices allowing to cover the entire scan length with a 3D acquisition (WB-SPECT/CT). In addition, the applications

Effect of Targeted Cytokine Inhibition on Progression of Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis Following Intra-Articular Fracture.

Intra-articular fractures (IAF) result in significant and prolonged inflammation, increasing the chances of developing post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). Interleukin-one beta (IL-1β) and Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α) are key inflammatory factors shown to be involved in osteochondral degradation following IAF. As such, use of targeted biologics such as Infliximab (INX), a TNF-α inhibitor, and Anakinra (ANR), an interleukin-one (IL-1) receptor antagonist (IL1RA), may protect against PTOA by damping the inflammatory response to IAF and reducing osteochondral degradation. To test this hyp

Machine Learning-Based Shear Optimal Adhesive Microstructures with Experimental Validation.

Bioinspired fibrillar structures are promising for a wide range of disruptive adhesive applications. Especially micro/nanofibrillar structures on gecko toes can have strong and controllable adhesion and shear on a wide range of surfaces with residual-free, repeatable, self-cleaning, and other unique features. Synthetic dry fibrillar adhesives inspired by such biological fibrils are optimized in different aspects to increase their performance. Previous fibril designs for shear optimization are limited by predefined standard shapes in a narrow range primarily based on human intuition, which rest
