There is very little literature on the overall management of adolescent traumatic amputation, specifically of the lower extremity. We present a case involving an adolescent patient involved in an industrial farm tractor rollover with substantial crush and degloving injuries requiring bilateral lower extremity amputations. The patient was initially assessed and acutely managed in the field before arriving at an adult level 1 trauma center having two right lower extremity tourniquets already applied and a pelvic binder in place. During his hospitalization, he was revised to bilateral above-knee

BACKGROUND: River surfing (also called "rapid surfing") involves surfing on stationary waves that are artificially created or placed in rivers and is gaining popularity, especially among surfers in landlocked areas but also among athletes without experience in ocean surfing. Different wave setups, types of boards, and types of fins, as well as the use of safety equipment, can lead to overuse and injuries.
PURPOSE: To analyze the incidence, mechanisms, and risk factors of river surfing-related injuries for different types of waves and to evaluate the usage and appropriateness of safety equipme

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is little available in-depth analysis of the biomechanical effect of different prostheses on the musculoskeletal system function and residual limb internal loading for persons with bilateral transfemoral/through-knee amputations (BTF). Commercially available prostheses for BTF include full-length articulated prostheses (microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knees with dynamic response prosthetic feet) and foreshortened non-articulated stubby prostheses. This study aims to assess and compare the BTF musculoskeletal function and loading during gait with these two type

BACKGROUND Circumcision is commonly performed in males, especially in Jewish and Muslim cultures, and is considered a safe surgical procedure with a low complication rate. Major complications, such as partial and total penile amputation, can occur, but those are rare complications. However, high replantation success rates have been reported and reviewed. CASE REPORT We describe the case of an 8-year-old boy who experienced total penile amputation during ritual circumcision performed by a layperson outside the hospital setting. Microsurgical penile replantation was performed after an ischemic p

BACKGROUND: There have been many reports on replantation of complete auricle amputation, but few reports on successful replantation of partial auricle amputation. The main reason is that the diameter of blood vessels at the end of auricle is only 0.3 mm, and it is difficult to find suitable blood vessels, especially venous vessels. The purpose of this study was to investigate the method of revascularization after partial auricle amputation.
METHODS: Microvascular repairs were performed in an amputated segment with only identified artery vessels for anastomosis, and vein was unavailable for an

PURPOSE: Clinicians assessing patients with deliberate self-inflicted amputations face a problem of whether or not to replant. The objective of this study was to summarize the literature on this topic and provide recommendations regarding the acute management of patients following self-inflicted amputations in the upper extremity.
METHODS: Two reviewers searched four databases using the keywords "Upper extremity," "Amputation," and "Self-Inflicted." The reviewers systematically screened and collected data on publications reporting cases of self-inflicted upper-extremity amputations. The findi

UNLABELLED: We observe delayed referrals to appropriate Microsurgery Unit and definitive treatment of traumatic limb amputations. Cases with wrist proximal amputations have a deadline for surgical replantation as these configure life-threatening injuries.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze patients with traumatic proximal wrist upper limb amputations with prolonged ischemic time who underwent temporary artery catheterization to assess stump viability and results.
METHODS: A case-series study including all patients with a proximal wrist upper limb amputation and a cold ischemic time equal to or above six

BACKGROUND: Some patients with post-stroke claw toe respond well to botulinum toxin (BoNT) treatment while others do not. This study was designed to assess the impact of stroke type (cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral infarction) on the outcome of BoNT treatment for claw toe.
METHODS: We retrospectively examined the medical records of patients who received local BoNT (onabotulinumtoxin A) injections into the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) and flexor digitorum longus (FDL) muscles. All patients suffered stroke-related leg paralysis and spasticity.
RESULTS: The study participants were 58 patients

BACKGROUND: The treatment of severe diabetic toe infection complicated with osteomyelitis is often surgical. The decision on the level of amputation, when required, is difficult. Very few articles reported comparative outcomes between toe amputation and ray resection, and only in relation to the hallux. The aim of this preliminary report is to record the results of these procedures when performed on all toes.
METHODS: This is a comparative retrospective study where the charts of a continuous series of 44 patients (48 procedures) with diabetic forefoot infection were analyzed. Only cases of se

BACKGROUND: Digital and ray amputations are common surgical treatments for infected bone and traumatic injuries in the foot. When disarticulated, the exposed articular cartilage can be addressed by either leaving the cartilage cap as a "protective barrier" to infection or by remodeling the exposed bone, removing the cartilage to bleeding bone to better fight infection.
METHODS: Our objective is to provide the first study in the foot to determine whether leaving exposed articular cartilage after toe amputation results in more returns to surgery and delayed healing. We performed a review of the

INTRODUCTION: Early diagnosis of systemic sclerosis (SSc) is important to start therapeutic interventions timely. Important risk factors for progression to SSc are the SSc-specific autoantibodies, of whom anti-centromere antibodies (ACA) and anti-topoisomerase I antibodies (ATA) are the most frequent. ATA is associated with a severe disease course. A more detailed characterisation of the ATA-response in SSc might increase insights in preclinical disease stages and improve prognostication. To address this we identified all patients with suspected very early ATA-positive SSc, defined as all pati

BACKGROUND: Giant Cell Tumour of Tendon Sheath (GCTTS) is a slow growing benign soft tissue tumour arising from synovium of tendon sheath or joint. These tumours occur more frequently in upper limbs, especially hands. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the cytomorphological spectrum of GCTTS.
METHODS: This retrospective study includes a total of 56 cases of GCTTS diagnosed over a period of 8 years. The clinical and radiological details of these cases were retrieved from the cytopathology records and detailed cytomorphological features were studied and analysed. Histopathological corre

BACKGROUND: Acromegaly is caused by the long-term excessive secretion of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). It can cause excessive hyperplasia of bone, cartilage, and soft tissue.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old woman had a history of joint pain and swelling for more than 1 year. She visited a local primary care clinic, but her illness was not diagnosed by a primary care physician. After relevant examination in our hospital, we excluded inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis, immune disease-related arthritis, and infectious arthritis, and considered os

BACKGROUND: Increased prevalence of autoantibody Fab glycosylation has been demonstrated for several autoimmune diseases.
OBJECTIVES: To study whether elevated Fab glycosylation is a common feature of autoimmunity, this study investigated Fab glycosylation levels on serum IgG and its subclasses for autoantibodies associated with a range of different B cell-mediated autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, myasthenia gravis subtypes, pemphigus vulgaris, antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, anti-glomerular basement membrane glomeru

Polydactyly is a malformation during the development of the human limb, which is characterized by the presence of more than the normal number of fingers or toes. It is considered to be one of the most common inherited hand disorders. It can be divided into two major groups: Non-syndromic polydactyly or syndromic polydactyly. According to the anatomical location of the duplicated digits, polydactyly can be generally subdivided into pre-, post-axial, and mesoaxial forms. Non-syndromic polydactyly is often inherited with an autosomal dominant trait and defects during the procedure of anterior-pos

OBJECTIVE: To explore the genetic basis for a child featuring short stature and postaxial polydactyly.
METHODS: A child who presented at Ningbo Women & Children's Hospital in May 2021 due to the"discovery of growth retardation for more than two years" was selected as the subject. Peripheral blood samples of the child and his parents were collected for the extraction of genomic DNA. Whole exome sequencing was carried out for the child, and candidate variant was verified by Sanger sequencing of his family members.
RESULTS: The child was found to harbor a heterozygous c.3670C>T (p.Q1224) varian

The finding of "hypermobility" has conventionally been considered as a dichotomous categorical variable in both clinical practice and in the literature. In other words, it is defined as being either "present" or "absent" in patients with hallux valgus. Yet it might be far more likely that this represents a continuous variable described by a bell-shaped distribution. Therefore the objective of this investigation was to consider hypermobility as a continuous variable, and to compare the sagittal plane first ray motion to radiographic parameters commonly used in the evaluation of the hallux valgu

There is no gold standard in the treatment of hallux valgus deformity. The purpose of our study was to compare various aspects of radiographic assessment following scarf and chevron osteotomies and try to determine which technique helps achieve a more pronounced intermetatarsal angle (IMA) and hallux valgus angle (HVA) correction and produces lower rates of complications, including adjacent-joint arthritis. This study included patients who underwent hallux valgus correction with the scarf (n = 32) or chevron (n = 181) method with a follow-up period of over 3 years. We evaluated the following p

BACKGROUND: Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) and autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) are renal ciliopathies. BBS has 22 pathogenic genes, and ADPKD is mainly caused by PKD1 and PKD2 variants. Cases with tri-allelic variants of BBS and PKD1 are rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: The proband was an 11-year-old Chinese male with cysts in both kidneys, blurred vision, hyperopia, and short fingers and toes. The patient underwent a kidney transplant due to rapid deterioration of renal failure. During follow-up, a smaller field of vision, a slow increase in height, and a weight gain were observed.
