Tinea Unguium and Tinea Pedis and Their Correlation With Diabetes Mellitus in the General Population in the Hail Region, Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Tinea pedis or foot ringworm is an infection of the feet affecting the soles, interdigital clefts of toes, and nails, with a dermatophyte fungus. It is also called athlete's foot. Onychomycosis of the nail is caused by dermatophytes called Tinea unguium. An abnormal nail not caused by a fungal infection is a type of dystrophic nail. Onychomycosis can infect both fingernails and toenails, but onychomycosis of the toenail is much more prevalent. Aim The study aimed to assess the knowledge, perception, and awareness among a sample from Ha'il City, Saudi Arabia, of the definitions, risk

[Clinical picture, causative agents and diagnostics of dermatomycoses].

Dermatomycoses affect free skin, hairy scalp, fingernails and toenails. In addition, oral mucosa and genital mucosa can also be affected by fungal infections. The most common pathogens causing skin fungal infections are dermatophytes. They are responsible for, among others, tinea corporis, tinea capitis and onychomycosis (tinea unguium). Mainly anthropophilic dermatophytes are found as pathogens. In the case of tinea capitis-at least in Europe and in German-speaking countries-zoophilic skin fungi must also be considered. Rarely, geophilic dermatophytes can also be isolated. Yeast infections of

Comparison of the effects of itraconazole and prednisolone on fibroblast growth factor-2 gene expression and clinical manifestations in patients with persistent severe asthma.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Tinea incognita (TI), or the other equivalent tinea atypica, is a term used to declare the atypical presentation of dermatophyte infections caused by the administration of steroids or other immunosuppressive medications which modulate the local and systemic immune response. It can mimic other dermatoses; hence making diagnostic challenges for dermatologists. Tina incognita may be misdiagnosed as many dermatoses. Based on previous studies, corticosteroids may cause different clinical manifestations of dermatophytes that might be very different from those that are commonl

Management of Diabetic Foot Ulcers Using Topical Oxygen Therapy: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Surgical and endovascular revascularization procedures along with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and topical oxygen therapy (TOT) for chronic oxygen-deprived wounds are standard care treatment protocols for diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). Topical developments in the delivery of topical oxygen therapy have made this a more feasible treatment in practice. The present case series highlights the efficacy of NATROX therapy as TOT in wound healing and the impact of increased oxygenation on ulcer healing in patients with diabetic foot ulcers. METHODS: The TOT was evaluated in 6 pati

Functional Surgery for Subungual Melanoma: Surgical Tips Based on Histological Analysis of 21 Cadavers.

BACKGROUND: Amputation has been the standard treatment for subungual melanoma. Although there is growing attention toward a more conservative functional surgery, specific operative techniques are not yet available. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to provide objective measurements for use in functional surgery by analyzing the anatomy of the nail apparatus obtained from 21 cadavers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nailbed thickness was histologically measured in each subunit, and skin surface anatomy was evaluated to determine the proximal resection margin. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to analyze mi

The discrepancy between radiographically-assessed and self-recognized hallux valgus in a large population-based cohort.

BACKGROUND: There has been a paucity of literature revealing the discrepancy between self-recognition about hallux valgus (HV) and radiographically-evaluated foot configuration. Knowing this discrepancy will help to make a comparative review of the findings of previous literatures about epidemiological studies about the prevalence of HV. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Is there a discrepancy between radiographically-assessed and self-recognized HV in the general population? (2) What factors affect the self-recognition of HV in the general population? METHODS: The fifth survey of the Research on Oste

Modeling toes contributes to realistic stance knee mechanics in three-dimensional predictive simulations of walking.

Physics-based predictive simulations have been shown to capture many salient features of human walking. Yet they often fail to produce realistic stance knee and ankle mechanics. While the influence of the performance criterion on the predicted walking pattern has been previously studied, the influence of musculoskeletal mechanics has been less explored. Here, we investigated the influence of two mechanical assumptions on the predicted walking pattern: the complexity of the foot model and the stiffness of the Achilles tendon. We found, through three-dimensional muscle-driven predictive simulati

An ultra-thinned groin flap for reconstruction of complete digital ring avulsion injuries.

In complete digital ring avulsions, amputation is usually carried out when replantation of the avulsed tissue is not an option or has failed. The purpose of this study was to report our experience in treating Urbaniak Class III degloved fingers using an ultra-thinned pedicled groin flap. Sixteen patients from ages 11 to 26 years were included. In all cases, the flexor digitorum superficialis tendon, extensor apparatus and proximal interphalangeal joint were intact. Rehabilitation included immediate active mobilization, with flap division at day 21. At a mean follow-up of 15 months, all patient

Model-free robust adaptive integral sliding mode impedance control of knee-ankle-toe active transfemoral prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: Wearing appropriate active prosthesis is the guarantee of daily life for amputees. Normally the controller of the traditional active transfemoral prosthesis is designed based on the mathematical model. The modelling error and the external interference will reduce the control accuracy of the system and make the prosthesis unable to operate in the desired trajectory. METHODS: Firstly, combined with time delay estimation (TDE), a model-free robust integral sliding mode impedance controller is designed. This method not only suppress the impedance error, but also eliminate the nonlinea

Inter-limb coordination in a novel pedalo task: A comparison of children with and without developmental coordination disorder.

Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) have been shown to have different coordination patterns on some tasks compared to their typically developing peers. However, it is unclear whether these differences are driven by the fact that typically developing children tend to be more practiced at the task on which coordination is being measured. The current study used a novel pedalo task to measure coordination in order to eliminate any practice differences. Thirty children (8 years -16 years), 15 with DCD and 15 without were recruited for this study. Children pedalled along an 8 m l

Intralesional Infiltrations of Arteriosclerotic Tissue Cells-Free Filtrate Reproduce Vascular Pathology in Healthy Recipient Rats.

Lower-extremity arterial disease is a major health problem with increasing prevalence, often leading to non-traumatic amputation, disability and mortality. The molecular mechanisms underpinning abnormal vascular wall remodeling are not fully understood. We hypothesized on the existence of a vascular tissue memory that may be transmitted through soluble signaling messengers, transferred from humans to healthy recipient animals, and consequently drive the recapitulation of arterial wall thickening and other vascular pathologies. We examined the effects of the intralesional infiltration for 6 day

Foot strike determines the center of pressure behavior and affects impact severity in heel-toe running.

This study assessed the centre of pressure (COP) behaviour and the relationship with impact severity during heel-toe running in conventional athletic footwear. We hypothesized that the COP behaviour depends on its location at foot strike, which would be associated with the vertical loading rate and peak tibial accelerations in heel-toe running. Ground reaction force and tibial acceleration were measured in 104 distance runners running level at ~3.2 m/s. High-speed plantar pressure captured at high temporal resolution (500 Hz) and spatial resolution (7.62 · 5.08 mm/sensor) allowed for localizat

The effect of heel-to-toe drop of running shoes on patellofemoral joint stress during running.

BACKGROUND: Traditional running shoes with heel-to-toe drops is thought to be a contributor to increased patellofemoral joint stress, which is proposed as a mechanism of patellofemoral pain. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is there an increase in patellofemoral joint stress when running in shoes with drops compared to running in shoes without a drop? METHODS: Lower limbs kinematics and ground reaction force were collected from eighteen healthy runners during over-ground running in shoes with 15 mm, 10 mm, 5 mm drops, and without a drop. Patellofemoral joint force and stress were calculated from the kinem

Site-Specific, Critical Threshold Barefoot Peak Plantar Pressure Associated with Diabetic Foot Ulcer History: A Novel Approach to Determine DFU Risk in the Clinical Setting.

Background and Objectives: Barefoot peak plantar pressures (PPPs) are elevated in diabetes patients with neuropathic foot ulcer (DFU) history; however, there is limited reported evidence for a causative link between high barefoot PPP and DFU risk. We aimed to determine, using a simple mat-based methodology, the site-specific, barefoot PPP critical threshold that will identify a plantar site with a previous DFU. Materials and Methods: In a cross-sectional study, barefoot, site-specific PPPs were measured with normal gait for patients with DFU history (n = 21) and healthy controls (n = 12), usin

Temporal, Location- and Symptom-Specific Likelihood of Patient-Reported Sensory Symptoms Related to Oxaliplatin-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (OIPN) in Patients Receiving Oxaliplatin for Three Months.

While oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy (OIPN) is more common and severe in patients who receive the previous standard, 6-month oxaliplatin-based treatment, we hypothesized that OIPN was still pervasive in patients who received shorter, 3-month-treatment regimens. Using six EORTC QLQ-CIPN20 questions that quantify numbness (N), tingling (T) and shooting/burning pain (P) in upper/lower distal extremities, our aim is to quantify patient-reported responses over 3 months (6 cycles) of oxaliplatin regarding symptom-specific timing, location and severity. For each question, patients were ask
