Arnold Kirkpatrick Henry (1886-1962) and his eponym (Master Knot of Henry): a narrative review.

PURPOSE: The aims of this review were to form a more precise description for Master Knot of Henry (MKH), and to modify classifications related to interconnections between flexor hallucis longus (FHL) and flexor digitorum longus (FDL) for showing all configurations in the literature. METHODS: A literature search was performed in main databases to obtain information related to anatomical definitions and variations of MKH. The search was carried out using the following keywords: "Master Knot of Henry", "Chiasma plantare", "Flexor hallucis longus" and "Flexor digitorum longus". Information extrac

Fibro-Osseous Pseudotumor.

Fibro-osseous pseudotumor is an extremely rare subcutaneous benign ossifying lesion associated with bone formation that is most commonly seen in the hands, followed by the toes. Because the tumor has a certain degree of invasiveness, it is often mistaken for malignancy, which leads to radical, excessive treatment. Our case involved a 32-year-old man with lesions on the left index finger. We documented the detailed data of diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. We also conducted a review and summarized the published cases to advance our understanding of the disease, provide more accurate diagnost

The Roles of Injury Type, Injury Level and Amputation Type in the Need for Revision Surgery after Replantation: Retrospective Clinical Outcome with 296 Finger Replantation.

BACKGROUND: With the development of microsurgical techniques, the replantation survival rate has increased, but in some cases, revision surgery is required. Although there are many studies on replantation survival rate, studies on revision surgery are limited. In this study, we evaluated replantation patients requiring revision surgery in terms of amputation level, injury type, and amputation type (single-multiple). METHODS: This is a retrospective study. Two hundred fifty-six patients (296 fingers) who were operated on for total finger amputation in our hospital between 2013 and 2018 were inc

SMARCA4: Implications of an Altered Chromatin-Remodeling Gene for Cancer Development and Therapy.

The SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex, via nucleosome topology modulation, regulates transcription. The SMARCA4 (BRG1) subunit codes for the ATPase energy engine of the SWI/SNF complex. SMARCA4 is a tumor suppressor that is aberrant in ∼5% to 7% of human malignancies. Class I SMARCA4 alterations (truncating mutations, fusions, and homozygous deletion) lead to loss of function whereas class II alterations (missense mutations) have a dominant negative/gain-of-function effect and/or loss-of function. SMARCA4 alterations typify the ultra-rare small cell carcinomas of the ovary hypercalcemic typ

Persistent Raynaud's Phenomenon Following Methylphenidate Hydrochloride Use During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) is a medical condition characterized by vasospasm of the digital vessels in the fingers and toes. The prevalence of RP in the general population is estimated at 3-5% and can vary based on climate. It is classified into primary and secondary RP based on causality. RP has been reported in some cases diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. We report the case of a 14-year-old Caucasian female who presented during the pandemic with chief complaints of suicidal ideations and attempted suicide and had a history of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorde

Immunoprofiling of early, untreated rheumatoid arthritis using mass cytometry reveals an activated basophil subset inversely linked to ACPA status.

BACKGROUND: Autoantibody production is a hallmark of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) are highly disease-specific, and their presence is associated with more severe disease and poor prognosis compared to ACPA-negative patients. However, the immune cell composition associated with antibody-positive/negative disease is incompletely defined. Mass cytometry (MC) is a high-dimensional technique offering new possibilities in the determination of the immune cell composition in rheumatic diseases. Here, we set up a broad phenotyping panel to study the immune cell

Macrodystrophia Lipomatosa: A Rare Cause of Bilateral Lower Limb Gigantism.

Macrodystrophia lipomatosa (MDL) is a rare congenital overgrowth syndrome characterised by inadvertent proliferation of all the mesenchymal elements resulting in localised gigantism. Herein, we present an eight-month-old female child, who presented to us with a history of gradual enlargement of both lower limbs along with the toes which was noticed by the parents a few days after birth. There was no history of trauma, pain or skin changes. Physical examination revealed unusual hypertrophy of both feet and toes. It was non-tender with no evidence of oedema or bruit over the swelling. Toe Support Pattern as a New Predictive Factor Associated with Falls in Older People with Psychiatric Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining autonomy is one of the principal objectives for seniors and people with psychiatric disorders. Podiatric medical care can help them maintain autonomy. This work aimed to characterize and quantify the support of the toes in a psychiatric population by analyzing the influence of psychotropic medications and toe and foot support parameters on the prevalence of falls. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study in 67 participants (31 people with psychiatric disorders and 36 without diagnosed disorders [control population]). Toe support pattern was analyzed wi

Evolution of anti-modified protein antibody responses can be driven by consecutive exposure to different post-translational modifications.

BACKGROUND: Besides anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA), rheumatoid arthritis patients (RA) often display autoantibody reactivities against other post-translationally modified (PTM) proteins, more specifically carbamylated and acetylated proteins. Immunizing mice with one particular PTM results in an anti-modified protein antibody (AMPA) response recognizing different PTM-antigens. Furthermore, human AMPA, isolated based on their reactivity to one PTM, cross-react with other PTMs. However, it is unclear whether the AMPA-reactivity profile is "fixed" in time or whether consecutive expo

Managing Wound Dehiscence With Mechanical Negative Pressure Wound Therapy: A Case Report.

Mechanical negative pressure wound therapy (mNPWT) is commonly used in the management of a variety of wounds, including diabetic foot ulcerations, surgical wounds, venous ulcerations, and wound dehiscence. This mechanically powered, disposable modality can be used to manage wounds in the outpatient setting and has been shown to be an effective wound care option when transitioning patients from the inpatient to outpatient setting and continuing NPWT for wound care. Mechanical NPWT helps promote wound healing by decreasing edema and via removal of tissue debris and exudate. Traditional NPWT is b

Impact of COVID-19 and suspension of colorectal cancer screening on incidence and stage distribution of colorectal cancers in the Netherlands.

Many countries had to suspend their colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programme as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This eventually may lead to postponed diagnoses of premalignant lesions and CRC, resulting in increased incidence or more advanced CRCs rates. This study aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on incidence and stage distribution of CRCs in the Netherlands, by monitoring CRC diagnoses and stage distribution in the months before, during and after the first COVID-19 wave. Data on incidence and stage distribution of CRCs of individuals aged 55-75 years in 25 hospitals

National Rates of Lower Extremity Amputation in People With and Without Diabetes in a Multi-Ethnic Asian Population: a Ten Year Study in Singapore.

OBJECTIVE: Population level data from Asia on amputation rates in people with and without diabetes are extremely limited. Hence it is unclear how the rising diabetes prevalence in Asia has affected the amputation burden. The present study examined national amputation rates in people with and without diabetes in Singapore from 2008 to 2017 in the context of increasing diabetes prevalence and health system changes. METHODS: This was a retrospective observational study using national population data for ages 16 - 100 years obtained from the Ministry of Health Singapore administrative datasets. A

Efficacy of a Pocket Pulse Oximeter and a Digital Pulse Oximeter as Screening Tools for Type 2 Diabetes Patients with Asymptomatic Lower Extremity Arterial Disease.

Introduction: The risk of developing lower extremity arterial diseases (LEAD) increases by 2-4 folds in patients with diabetes mellitus. Diabetic individuals with LEAD are more likely than non-diabetic individuals to have limb amputations, and they have a higher risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular problems. The present study sought to assess the efficacy of two pulse oximeters, a high-quality standard digital pulse oximeter and an inexpensive pocket pulse oximeter, to detect LEAD in patients with diabetes mellitus. Material and methods: Qualifying patients were examined with a pocket pu

Amputation as a First Treatment is Highly Associated With Late Presentation: An Underestimated Modifiable Major Risk Factor for Diabetic Foot Ulcer.

PURPOSE: Several risk factors for lower extremity amputation in diabetic patients have been identified; however, late presentation has been poorly investigated. Very few studies looked at the impact of such risk factor. As none has investigated the link between admission to amputation and late presentation in this population, we investigated such association. METHODS: The study is a retrospective comparative cohort of continuous series of patients admitted for amputation related to diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) as a first treatment. A late presentation was defined as a period of 3 weeks or more f

Self-Reported Severity, Characteristics, and Functional Limitations of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: The early identification of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) (e.g., numbness or tingling in the fingers or toes) is important due to its frequency and the few effective treatment options available. The identification of common patient-reported CIPN characteristics and associated functional limitations may help to facilitate patient-clinician discussions of CIPN in practice. AIMS: To quantify the severity, duration, location, characteristics, and associated functional limitations of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in patients receiving neurotoxic

Quantitative Evaluation and Midterm Progress of Reconstructed Toe Thickness in Lateral Ray Polydactyly of the Foot.

In lateral ray polydactyly, the reconstructed toe often tends to become thicker, but no standard evaluation criteria for this thickness are available. 57 patients (68 toes) with Hirai-Togashi classification type II, III, or IV whom we were able to follow-up for more than 6 months after the operation were underwent measurement of the "Reconstructed toe width to Third toe width ratio." In addition, 16 patients who could be followed up for 3 years through the mid-term course were evaluated for mid-term progress. At 6 months after surgery, the mean R/T ratio was 1.246. In patients who could be fol

Patient-reported Outcome Measures following Traumatic Lower Extremity Amputation: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Outcomes after traumatic major lower extremity amputation (MLEA) have focused on surgical complications, despite the life-altering impact on patients. With advances in the surgical management of MLEA, a heightened need for consistent reporting of patient-centered outcomes (PCO) remains. This meta-analysis assesses articles for the prevalence and methods of PCO reporting among traumatic MLEA studies. METHODS: An electronic database search was completed using Ovid MEDLINE for studies published between 2000 and 2020. Studies were included that reported any outcome of traumatic MLEA.
