The thumb is pivotal to many functions of the hand. Loss or absence of the thumb can be catastrophic to a patient's functioning. Different methods can be employed to surgically fashion a new thumb. However, for proper decision on antibiotics in medical management of DFO, accurate determination of microbes is necessary to narrow the spectrum of coverage and to reduce adverse effects of long-term administration of antibiotics. With differing pattern of use of antimicrobials and their resistance pattern in different countries, it is empirical to determine the microbiological characteristics of bone cultures in DFO from a referral institute in South India.

BACKGROUND: Brachydactylies are a group of inherited conditions, characterized mainly by the presence of shortened fingers and toes. Based on the patients' phenotypes, brachydactylies have been subdivided into 10 subtypes. In this study, we have identified a family with two members affected by brachydactyly type A2 (BDA2). BDA2 is caused by mutations in three genes: BMPR1B, BMP2 or GDF5. So far only two studies have reported the BDA2 cases caused by mutations in the BMPR1B gene.
METHODS: We employed next-generation sequencing to identify mutations in culpable genes.

We report the use of obliquely oriented V-Y advancement pulp flaps to reconstruct 17 consecutive, lateral oblique fingertip traumatic defects over a 2-year period. All flaps survived completely with no bone protuberance, prominent scar or neuroma evident at an average follow-up of 11 months (range 7 to 19).
