BACKGROUND: Energy-storage and return feet incorporate various design features including split toes. As a potential improvement, an energy-storage and return foot with a dedicated ankle joint was recently introduced allowing for easily accessible inversion/eversion movement. However, the adaptability of energy-storage and return feet to uneven ground and the effects on biomechanical and clinical parameters have not been investigated in detail.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the design-related ability of prosthetic feet to adapt to cross slopes and derive a theoretical model.

OBJECTIVE: Autoreactive antibody responses, including the use of several isotypes of autoantibodies, have been shown to be associated with clinical outcome in several rheumatic autoimmune diseases. The goals of this study were to evaluate whether (1) anticentromere antibody (ACA)- and antitopoisomerase antibody (ATA)-specific isotype expression, and (2) organ involvement are associated with the degree of microangiopathy in systemic sclerosis (SSc).
METHODS: ACA and ATA IgG, IgM, and IgA levels were measured in baseline serum samples of ACA IgG-positive (+) and ATA IgG+ patients with SSc. The

OBJECTIVE: Anti-topoisomerase I (anti-topo I) autoantibodies in systemic sclerosis (SSc) are associated with diffuse skin involvement and interstitial lung fibrosis. Thus far, however, the relationship between anti-topo I antibody response and disease course has not yet been fully evaluated. This study was undertaken to gain insight into the association between characteristics of the anti-topo I antibody response and clinical disease course in SSc patients positive for anti-topo I antibodies.
METHODS: Levels of anti-topo I IgG, anti-topo I IgM, and anti-topo I IgA were assessed in consecutive

BACKGROUND: Measurements of plantar loading reveal foot-to-floor interaction during activity, but information on bone architecture cannot be derived. Recently, cone-beam computer tomography (CBCT) has given visual access to skeletal structures in weight-bearing. The combination of the two measures has the potential to improve clinical understanding and prevention of diabetic foot ulcers. This study explores the correlations between static 3D bone alignment and dynamic plantar loading.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with diabetes were enrolled (group ALL): 15 type 1 with (N, 7) and without (D, 8) d

Exosome proteomic analysis may reveal differentially abundant proteins that are of significance for clarifying the pathogenesis of SAPHO (Synovitis, Acne, Pustulosis, Hyperostosis and Osteitis) syndrome. Exosomes were isolated from the serum, bone marrow and skin tissue of the palm and toe pustular areas in a unique patient with SAPHO syndrome. The exosomes were not different from those of healthy subjects in size (114.1 ± 73.7 nm) or morphology. Label-free exosome proteomic analysis identified 198 more abundant proteins and 183 less abundant compared with those of healthy subjects. Gene ontol

Macrodactyly of the foot is an extremely rare congenital malformation characterized by an increase in the size of all the elements or structures of a digit or digits. Most sources indicate that macrodactyly affects the hand more often than the foot. This rare medical condition usually requires surgical intervention with a precise preoperative plan and postoperative rehabilitation. We present a case of macrodactyly of the right foot in which surgical reduction of the foot under assistance of 3-dimensional image technology was performed with satisfying cosmetic and functional outcomes.

PURPOSE: Cone-rod dystrophy (CRD) is a rare hereditary eye disorder that causes progressive degeneration of cone and rod photoreceptors. More than 30 genes, including RAB28, have been associated with CRD; however, only a few RAB28 variants have been reported to be associated with CRD. In this study, we describe two brothers with CRD and a homozygous missense variant, c.55G>A (p.Gly19Arg), in RAB28.
METHODS: The missense variant was identified as part of a study investigating underlying genetic defects in a large patient cohort (n = 667) using targeted next-generation sequencing of 125 genes a

In Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, patients may have a particularly severe clinodactyly of the thumb. We evaluated a new method for correction of these severe clinodactylies using non-vascularized toe phalanx transfer as a replacement for the abnormal delta phalanx. Results of the new technique are presented, together with those of an osteotomy technique. We retrospectively recorded the angle of the clinodactyly before and after surgery and at long-term follow-up of 11 osteotomies and five transfers in nine patients from 1990 to 2017. The pre-operative angle of clinodactyli was similar between the

BACKGROUND: The success of digital replantation is highly dependent on the patency of the repaired vessels after microvascular anastomosis. Antithrombotic agents are frequently used for preventing vascular occlusion. Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) has been reported to be as effective as unfractionated heparin (UFH) in peripheral vascular surgery, but with fewer adverse effects. Its benefit in microvascular surgery such as digital replantation is unclear. This is an update of the review first published in 2013.
OBJECTIVES: To assess if treatment with subcutaneous LMWH improves the salvage

Background Apert syndrome is characterized by craniosynostosis, midface hypoplasia and symmetric syndactyly. Case report: A 36-year-old mother, G2P1 underwent an ultrasound scan at 19 week's gestation. There was craniosynostosis, brachi-turricephaly and bilateral hand syndactyly. Genomic DNA from amniocentesis revealed the mutation C758C>Gp. (Pro to Arg substitution) at 252 of the exon 8 of the FGFR2 encoding for Apert syndrome. The pregnancy was terminated. Femoral chondral plate histology showed an increased interstitial matrix between bony trabeculae. Compared with normal, the trabeculae we

PRKACA and PRKACB code for two catalytic subunits (Cα and Cβ) of cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), a pleiotropic holoenzyme that regulates numerous fundamental biological processes such as metabolism, development, memory, and immune response. We report seven unrelated individuals presenting with a multiple congenital malformation syndrome in whom we identified heterozygous germline or mosaic missense variants in PRKACA or PRKACB. Three affected individuals were found with the same PRKACA variant, and the other four had different PRKACB mutations. In most cases, the mutations arose de novo,

Prior studies have investigated associations between body mass index (BMI) and foot structure; however, these studies are limited only to the evaluation of the longitudinal arch of the foot and do not evaluate associations with body composition. Therefore, this study examined associations between body fat percentage (BFP) and muscle mass percentage with foot structure in adolescents. This study was conducted with 158 healthy subjects aged from 11 to 13 years. Body fat percentage and muscle mass percentage were estimated using bioelectrical impedance analysis. A podoscope was used to calculate

Polydactyly is a common congenital hand, foot, or both anomalies characterized by the presence of extra fingers. Postaxial polydactyly is the most common congenital malformation consisting of the lateral or fibular aspect of the foot. Extra finger excision in the treatment of foot polydactyly is considered the basic procedure in surgery. However, in some cases more complex surgeries should be preferred. In this study, the "on-top plasty" method with a minimally invasive approach is presented in a case of complex foot postaxial polydactyly.
