Influence of obstacle color on locomotor and gaze behaviors during obstacle avoidance in people with Parkinson's disease.

The color of an obstacle may enable a more detailed view of the environment to facilitate obstacle avoidance. However, people with Parkinson's disease (PD) present visual contrast and color detection dysfunction, which could affect obstacle avoidance according to obstacle color. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of obstacle color on locomotor and gaze behavior during obstacle avoidance in people with PD and neurologically healthy older individuals. Thirteen people with PD and eleven matched-control group individuals, with normal visual acuity (20/20 on the Snellen ch

Sequential Prodrug Strategy To Target and Eliminate ACPA-Selective Autoreactive B Cells.

Autoreactive B cells are thought to play a pivotal role in many autoimmune diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease affecting ∼1% of the Western population and is hallmarked by the presence of anticitrullinated proteins antibodies (ACPA) produced by autoreactive B cells. We intend to develop a method to target and selectively eliminate these autoreactive B cells using a sequential antigen prodrug targeting strategy. As ACPA-expressing B cells are thought to play essential roles in RA-disease pathogenesis, we used this B cell response as a prototype to analyze the feasibilit

How does ballet training alter ankle tendinous morphology and hemodynamics in asymptomatic pre-professional dancers? An ultrasonographic study.

OBJECTIVES: Among symptomatic dancers, sonographic abnormalities are common. Whether asymptomatic dancers have any abnormalities remains unknown. Some dancers became cyanosis over distal feet after ballet training. The hemodynamic changes at the feet in ballet are not clearly understood. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: In 25 dancers and 14 non-dancers, B-mode ultrasonography was used to measure cross-sectional areas (CSA) of tendons of deep posterior compartment muscles. Doppler ultrasonography was used to measure peak velocity (Vpeak) of posterior tibial artery in three ankle postur

The SoftHand Pro: Functional evaluation of a novel, flexible, and robust myoelectric prosthesis.

Roughly one quarter of active upper limb prosthetic technology is rejected by the user, and user surveys have identified key areas requiring improvement: function, comfort, cost, durability, and appearance. Here we present the first systematic, clinical assessment of a novel prosthetic hand, the SoftHand Pro (SHP), in participants with transradial amputation and age-matched, limb-intact participants. The SHP is a robust and functional prosthetic hand that minimizes cost and weight using an underactuated design with a single motor. Participants with limb loss were evaluated on functional clinic

Temporal (in)stability of suboptimal toe-brachial indices.

OBJECTIVE: To be effective in screening, prognostic, and monitoring contexts, the toe-brachial index (TBI) should not be susceptible to large sporadic fluctuations from one time to another. In order to identify whether those fluctuations exist in people who have suboptimal TBIs, the temporal stability of their TBIs was examined in detail across 6 months. METHODS: TBI readings from SysToe and Omron automated devices were taken from 21 participants at baseline and at 2- and 6-month timepoints subsequently. The primary inclusion criterion was that participants had at least one of three baseline

Expanding the Clinical Spectrum of Sotos Syndrome in a Patient with the New "c.[5867T>A]+[=]"; "p.[Leu1956Gln]+[=]" NSD1 Missense Mutation and Complex Skin Hamartoma.

Sotos syndrome is one of the most common overgrowth diseases and it predisposes patients to cancer, generally in childhood. The prevalence of this genetic disorder is 1:10,000⁻1:50,000, and it is characterized by wide allelic heterogeneity, with more than 100 different known mutations in the nuclear receptor-binding SET domain containing protein 1 (NSD1) gene. Most of these alterations are deletions and common micro-deletions with haploinsufficiency. Singular variants are missense mutations. The present study reports a case of a 4-year-old boy with specific clinical features of Sotos syndrome

Inhibitory effect of salvianolic acid on inflammatory mediators of rats with collagen-induced rheumatoid arthritis.

The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of salvianolic acid on inflammatory mediators of rats with collagen-induced rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Thirty rats were randomly divided into the normal control group, collagen-induced arthritis model group (CIA model group) and drug group (Salvianolic Acid-CIA group). In the model group, the CIA models were established through intradermal injection of collagen emulsion at the toes. At 3 weeks after the model establishment, grouped drug administration was conducted, of which salvianolic acid was given by gavage to Salvianolic Acid-

Burst-Like Subcutaneous Electrical Stimulation Induces BDNF-Mediated, Cyclotraxin B-Sensitive Central Sensitization in Rat Spinal Cord.

Intrathecal administration of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) induces long-term potentiation (LTP) and generates long-lasting central sensitization in spinal cord thus mimicking chronic pain, but the relevance of these observations to chronic pain mechanisms is uncertain. Since C-fiber activation by a high-frequency subcutaneous electrical stimulation (SES) protocol causes spinal release of BDNF and induces spinal cord LTP, we propose that application of such protocol would be a sufficient condition for generating long-lasting BDNF-mediated central sensitization. Results showed that a

[The revenue from finger replantation and revision amputation: Is it cost-covering?].

BACKGROUND: Finger amputation injuries are frequently treated conditions in occupational accident hospitals. They are either treated by replantation or revision amputation. The costs of these two treatment options differ significantly. This study aims to determine if the revenue generated from the treatment of finger amputation injuries in the German DRG system is cost-covering and if there are differences depending on the type of health insurance. METHODS: Based on our hospital's cost data from the years 2014 and 2015, we performed an analysis of the revenue generated from finger replantatio

Autoantibody Development under Treatment with Immune-Checkpoint Inhibitors.

Immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) activate the immune system to assault cancer cells in a manner that is not antigen specific. We hypothesized that tolerance may also be broken to autoantigens, resulting in autoantibody formation, which could be associated with immune-related adverse events (irAEs) and antitumor efficacy. Twenty-three common clinical autoantibodies in pre- and posttreatment sera from 133 ipilimumab-treated melanoma patients were determined, and their development linked to the occurrence of irAEs, best overall response, and survival. Autoantibodies developed in 19.2% (19/99)

Firing properties of muscle spindles supplying the intrinsic foot muscles of humans in unloaded and freestanding conditions.

We recently developed an approach for recording from muscle spindles in the intrinsic muscles of the foot in freestanding humans by inserting a tungsten microelectrode into the posterior tibial nerve behind the medial malleolus of the ankle. Here we characterize the behavior of muscle spindles in the small muscles of the foot in 1) seated subjects with the leg horizontal and the foot naturally plantarflexed and 2) standing subjects. In the first study, recordings were made from 26 muscle spindle afferents located within flexor digiti minimi brevis ( n = 4), abductor digiti minimi ( n = 3), qua

The success of salvage procedures for failing digital replants: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The success of salvage procedures for failing digital replants (FR) is poorly documented. We sought to evaluate the success of salvage procedures for FR and factors contributing to successes and failures of replants. METHODS: Adult patients who presented to our center between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2015, suffered ≥1 digital amputation(s), and underwent digital replantation were included. Preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative details were recorded. Digits were monitored postoperatively via nursing and physician assessments. The presumed reason for failure, detail

Re-amputations and mortality after below-knee, through-knee and above-knee amputations.

INTRODUCTION: From January 2013, we changed the surgical strategy in our department and ceased to perform the through-knee amputation (TKA). The primary aim of this study was to investigate re-amputation rates ≤ 90 days after non-traumatic major lower-extremity amputations performed before and after this change of practice. Furthermore, we reported mortality before and after the change of practice. METHODS: All non-traumatic major lower-extremity amputations performed in a single centre in two study periods (before and after the change of practice); 2009-2012 (cohort A) and 2014-2015 (cohort

Joint Position Sense Testing in Young Children.

The standard physical examination evaluation for a proprioception abnormality depends upon the patient's ability to follow directions and respond to the examiner, a skill not yet developed in toddlers. This study demonstrates a new proprioception examination method that may allow for better localization of lesions and determines whether healthy toddlers would cooperate with this test. By placing stickers on children's hands, covering their eyes, and then moving their hands, the examiner can see whether the children reach for where their hands and stickers were previously located or to their ne

External bleeding versus dermal pocketing for distal digital replantation without venous anastomosis.

Venous congestion in distal digital replantations is a common problem as suitable veins are not always available. We compared two methods of venous decongestion, external bleeding ( n = 15) and dermal pocketing ( n = 28) carried out when venous anastomosis was not possible. The findings of this small study suggest that neither method of venous decongestion is clearly better than the other. Level of evidence: IV.
