A new horned toad of Boulenophrys (Anura, Megophryidae) was discovered in Hubei Province, China.

The diversity of the genus Boulenophrys, with around 72 species identified so far, is still thought to be highly underestimated, as it contains a large number of undescribed cryptic species. The favorable ecological environment of the Dalaoling National Nature Reserve, located in Yichang City, Hubei Province, is home to many characteristic species. This work describes a new species from central China, namely: Boulenophrys dalaolingensis Wang, Chen & Liu, 2025, sp. nov. Morphologically, the new species is characterized by the combination of nine external characters: (1) medium-sized body (SVL 4

Moving Toes Syndrome in Children and Youth: Case Series of a Rare Disorder.

"Moving toes syndrome" is a rare movement disorder with painful and painless forms. There is a paucity of literature on patients presenting with moving toes syndrome in the first 2 decades. We present 3 cases of moving toes syndrome, with symptom onset between 9 and 19 years. Pain was variable in these patients. Etiologies included minor trauma in 2 patients and a central thalamic-hypothalamic lesion in another. Two of 3 patients required no treatment, and symptoms gradually improved. Similar to adults, children and youth with moving toes syndrome can demonstrate features that overlap with fun

A new species of flea-toad of the genus Brachycephalus Fitzinger, 1826 (Anura: Brachycephalidae) from the cloud forests of Serra do Mar, southeastern Brazil.

Species of the genus Brachycephalus are endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, where they inhabit amidst the leaf litter. Depending on their phenotypic traits, these small-sized amphibians are commonly referred to as either flea-toads or pumpkin toadlets. Among them, the pumpkin toadlets (with a bufoniform phenotype) have received more extensive research attention. These individuals are often conspicuous, and prevalent in their natural habitat. In contrast, the flea-toads (leptodactyliform species) are brownish, cryptic with the background. This scarcity has led to their reduced scientific

Ex-vivo limb perfusion in military and civilian medicine: inspired by ex-vivo organ perfusion, pioneered for traumatic limb amputation and peripheral nerve regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic amputations have increased worldwide over the past two decades and are expected to increase by 72% by 2050. Surgical replantation provides superior functional recovery and patient satisfaction but is limited to specialized centers and restricted by short ischemia times, due to life-over-limb prioritization in patient care. To overcome these limitations, we developed an ex vivo limb perfusion system (EVEP) to extend limb viability and, for the first time, investigate its impact on peripheral nerve regeneration, a key prerequisite for functional recovery following replantat

Care of the Dying Patient: Maximizing Compassionate Care on the Battlefield.

Palliative care is a philosophy of treatment that focuses on relieving suffering while aligning care with a patient's goals. This treatment modality has proven benefits for civilian patients of all ages with both traumatic injuries and non-traumatic disease states. It results in the reduction of distressing symptoms and improved patient satisfaction, as well as reducing painful, ultimately futile interventions. Palliative care has also been employed throughout history on the battlefield and is a vital component of compassionate care for dying patients. Unfortunately, its use on the battlefield

Development and validation of interpretable machine learning models for predicting the risk of necrosis after finger replantation: A retrospective multicenter study.

INTRODUCTION: Digital necrosis (DN) is a critical postoperative complication following finger replantation surgery. This can necessitate additional surgical interventions that can adversely affect the patient's hand functionality, psychological well-being, and financial standing. The timely identification and management of the risk of post-replantation DN are thus crucial for enhancing patient outcomes. The objective of this study was to create and validate an easily understandable machine learning (ML) model for predicting the risk of DN following finger replantation surgery. PATIENTS AND ME

Correction of lesser toe deformities: minimally invasive versus open surgery-a prospective randomised study.

OBJECTIVE: To compare soft and hard outcome measures after minimally invasive (MIS) and open (OS) surgical treatment of lesser toe deformities. It was hypothesised that MIS would be associated with fewer complications and comparable subjective and objective results. METHODS: A prospective randomised controlled study was designed. One hundred patients were included consecutively and allotted via block randomisation to two groups. The presence of co-pathologies at the forefoot and midfoot, which were treated simultaneously, was not an exclusion criterion. However, these cases were analysed to e

A systematic review of outcomes following transhumeral amputation for brachial plexus injury.

INTRODUCTION: Brachial plexus injuries (BPI) are devastating conditions that frequently result in flail, insensate upper limbs associated with severe neuropathic pain and loss of function. When reconstructive options such as nerve grafts, transfers, or free muscle transplantation fail to restore meaningful function, transhumeral amputation may be considered as a salvage strategy. The advent of advanced prosthetic technologies, particularly myoelectric and osseointegrated devices, has renewed interest in elective amputation for select patients. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review evaluates func

Microsurgical Foot Reconstruction in Children Affected by Lawn Mower Injury.

BACKGROUND: Lawn mower injuries can cause limb-threatening wounds in the lower extremities of children. Although most cases require only basic wound treatment, a minority need microsurgical and orthopedic reconstruction for limb salvage. These procedures remain complex owing to small vessel diameter, increased vasospasticity, limited postoperative compliance, and continued growth in children. This case series demonstrated successful microsurgical foot reconstructions in a selected pediatric patient cohort. METHODS: Three patients younger than 5 years underwent foot reconstruction after mower

Outcomes of amputation and limb salvage in combat injuries: Does level of injury matter? A secondary analysis of Military Extremity Trauma Amputation/Limb Salvage (METALS) study data.

BACKGROUND: The Lower Extremity Assessment Project (LEAP) and Military Extremity Trauma Amputation/Limb Salvage Study (METALS) reported conflicting results with respect to severe lower extremity injuries treated with limb salvage versus amputation. The LEAP study reported no difference between amputation and limb salvage groups, while the METALS study reported improved outcomes with amputation. The purpose of this study was to re-evaluate the METALS data to determine whether the ankle/hindfoot injuries were the main driver of the results of improved outcome with amputation. METHODS: This is a

Free Chain-Linked Fillet Flaps From a Contralateral Chopart Amputation for Reconstruction of an Extensive Lower Extremity Defect: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Free fillet flap reconstruction transfers composite tissue from an unsalvageable limb to repair a separate defect. We report a case of free fillet flaps based on the posterior tibial artery (PTA) and anterior tibial artery (ATA). A 41-year-old man was crushed under a truck; his right leg suffered an open tibia and fibula fracture (Gustilo IIIB) with extensive soft tissue loss, while his left foot was amputated at the tarsal level. He initially underwent Chopart-level amputation of the left limb, which was subsequently revised to a below-knee amputation. Two free fillet flaps were harvested fro

Total Hip Arthroplasty in a Patient With Contralateral Hemipelvectomy: A Case Report With a One-Year Follow-Up and Literature Review.

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a standard procedure to alleviate pain and improve joint function in patients with advanced degenerative hip osteoarthritis. Hemipelvectomy, or hindquarter amputation, is a complex, technically demanding procedure with a challenging prosthetic rehabilitation journey. It is often indicated for malignancies or traumatic injury. Hemipelvectomy often leads to a lack of structural stability and altered weight distribution, requiring customized approaches to ensure stability and functional restoration. Thus, THA in patients who have undergone contralateral hemipelvect
