A study of peak force exerted under areas of the foot was made in 27 patients with rheumatoid disease and in 30 normal persons. Patients were found to exert considerably less force under their toes and under the first metatarsal head and more force under the 3 outer metatarsal heads. It was possible to correlate these changes with increasing clinical and radiological severity.

The authors have observed ten compartment syndromes of the leg. Nine occurred after tibial fractures, one after a contusive trauma. Early signs those of muscular and neural ischemia, with an acute pain when the toes are passively mobilised. The cast must be promptly removed. In 6 cases the two compartments were involved. A case of an infrequent congenital malformation, partial ring constrictions on fingers and toes and their amputation associated with cleft lip, facial cleft, microphthalmus and hydrocephalus is described. The etiology of the congenital malformation is discussed. Based on the literature, the question is put forward whether an increase in the frequency of this malformation could be connected to the more frequent use of amniocentesis.

22 cases of arterial occlusion below the branching of the popliteal artery and 1 case of traumatic subtotal amputation of the calf were revascularized by autogenous femoro-crural vein bypasses. All patients had pain at rest and/or gangrene. The two children of an epileptic woman who underwent therapy with hydantoin during both pregnancies showed the characteristic findings of the fetal hydantoin syndrome: growth retardation, microcephaly, mental retardation, and a distinct hysmorphic pattern. Two successful cases of replantation of part of an ear are presented; both were done by simple suture. The larger of these replants consisted of a 13 x 43 mm segment of the superior helix and concha. Both were vascularized beofre 48 hours. The greatest problem was venous congestion. In the larger replant we made multiple puncture wounds daily on both sides of the graft with an 18-gauge needle to help relieve this.

Extinction and synesthesia were studied in 50 patients with spinal cord injury with various levels and extents. Extinction was found in 20 (40 per cent) and synesthesia in 6 (12 per cent) of the 40 males and 10 females. No correlations were found between either of the two phenomena and parameters of patient's age, lesion's age, lesion's level and extent, or accompanying head injury. A recent survey of congenital hand anomalies has revealed that symphalangism of the distal interphalangeal joint is more frequent than had previously been reported. To date, however, only 3 familial pedigrees have been documented in the literature. Severe deformities of the hind limb skeleton such as shortening, abnormal curvatures, terminal expansions, curled toes and joint dislocations were produced in frog tadpoles by the osteolathyrogenic principle. In postoperative follow-ups in a large number of patients who underwent Hallus valgus surgery according to Brandes, residual pain was found due to insufficient resection of the proximal phalanx. It is pointed out that the results of this frequent and beneficial Hallux valgus surgery can be improved by using a more subtile surgical technique. Figs. 1-5 show that errors continue to be made. If these errors can be avoided in the future this report will have fulfilled its purpose.

The neurovascular free flap from the first web region of the foot affords unrivalled potential for refurbishing sensibility to the denervated hand. Its greatest application is when no conventional island flap tissue remains for transfer. Two cases of immediate replantation of avulsed scalps by microvascular anastomosis are presented. This method of treatment seems to offer significant economic, social, and psychological advantages over split-skin grafting of the calvarium, or other presently used treatments. The nature and origin of circular constrictions and intrauterine amputations can be studied more effectively in the fetus than in the newborn. Two cases of fetal micro- and syndactyly secondary to ring constrictions are discussed with respect to morphological processes. The amniotic membranes display active chorionic proliferation in addition to amniotic rupture and passive string formation. Moreover, association between the origin of amniotic bands and preceding amniocentesis seems to be possible in one case though it is difficult to ascertain.
