The cytologic development of Meissner corpuscles of the mouse toe pad has been studied using light and electron microscopy, and correlated with silver impregnations of frozen sections. By 18 days of gestation, neurites are seen near the epidermis, but intraepidermal neurites are few. The systolic blood-pressure at the ankle and the first toe was measured in 30 patients, mean age 42, who had taken ergotamine regularly for more than a year. With one exception, the patients had no symptoms or signs of arterial insufficiency in the limbs, but all had low-normal or abnormal foot systolic blood-pressures. In a group of 13 patients who stopped taking ergotamine the distal pressures rose significantly and from the ninth day were normal.

Twenty-six samples of human skin from three non-weight-bearing and 27 samples from three weight-bearing sites were obtained at autopsy from 11 subjects varying in age from 4 to 91 years. The dermis was idssected free of other tissues and after proteolytic digestion, the glycosaminoglycans were isolated quantitatively by ion-exchange chromatography. The distribution of hair of the right lower limb has been studied in a random sample of 220 healthy Central Indian males 17 to 45 years of age. The common hair patterns observed are the proximal phalangeal hair in all toes in 55.45%, the middle phalangeal hair in the third toe in 8.18%, the tibial on the dorsum of foot in 69.55%, and the pedo-cruro-femoral in the lower limb in 70.00% subjects. Resting blood flow in the leg was measured twice per week by venous occlusion plethysmography, for two or more menstrual cycles in 11 normal female volunteers, 5 of whom were taking an oral contraceptive. Inversion of the intrahepatic flow is a phenomenon commonly observed during the initial days of a liver contusion. We have reviewed the records of 25 patients who underwent a transmetatarsal amputation at San Francisco General Hospital. The average patient age was 63 years old. Twelve of the patients were diabetic, while transmetatarsal amputations were performed in eleven with simple arteriosclerosis. Two patients underwent amputations for either trauma or nonhealing ulcer. Thirteen of the patients healed their amputation, and twelve of these became ambulatory. Yao and Bergan [8] have shown that an ankle systolic index of more than 0.25 is associated with a high rate of success from lumbar sympathectomy. Two brothers with severe and rare lower limb malformations but normal upper limbs are described. Both brothers had glans hypospadias and they died in early infancy. In the first brother the limb malformation was a severe deformity of the right foot which was split and of rockerbottom shape with oligosyndactyly. Two years of experience with our replantation service in Vienna serves to define the criteria by which an amputated member is deemed worthy of replantation. 68 cases are analyzed and the complications and failures are discussed. This paper is the second part of a survey of 370 patients with craniosynostosis. It concerns 109 patients with coronal synostosis, with or without additional suture involvement who lacked polysyndactyly or syndactyly. This survey shows that there are at least 6 autosomal and 2 gonosomal aberrations which may produce specific types of limb anomaly in 30%-80% of cases. A study was made over two winters in Chittenden County, Vermont of 15 persons injured by snowblowers and 17 neighbors who owned such machines but had not been injured. Twelve of the 15 injuries involved amputation, fracture, or laceration of fingers from contact with an impeller blade in inadequately guarded chutes. The use of 21 gauge winged needles for direct arterial pressure monitoring is described. The results obtained with this technique compare favourably with those obtained from direct cannulation of major vessels. Ninety-two acute combat amputations were performed in 70 casualities of the Vietnam conflict. In the 67 surviving patients with 83 stumps, primary closure was done in 24 limbs (30%) and delayed closure in 11 more. Closed cases were observed 2 weeks and no failures noted. In selected patients early suture of war amputations can be practiced with a satisfactory result.
