Limited clinical value of follow-up radiography in symptom-guided ankle fracture care: A retrospective cohort study in the virtual fracture care model.

BACKGROUND: Ankle fractures are common injuries encountered in emergency and orthopedic trauma care. Although routine follow-up radiography is widely used, its clinical utility has been increasingly questioned. In response, structured care models such as Virtual Fracture Care (VFC) have been developed to optimize efficiency by minimizing unnecessary follow-up. PURPOSE: To assess whether clinically and non-clinically indicated follow-up radiographs meaningfully impact treatment decisions in patients with ankle fractures managed within the VFC model. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.

Return to sport following Lisfranc injuries in elite athletes-2024 International Foot and Ankle Sports Consensus and systematic review.

PURPOSE: Lisfranc injuries, also referred to as tarsometatarsal joint injuries, are relatively uncommon within the general population and can possess profound clinical implications, especially for elite athletes. Existing follow-up and return to sport (RTS) protocols remain poorly defined and variable based on surgeon preference or institutional protocols. The purpose of this study was to both perform a systematic review and determine if consensus on postoperative protocols and RTS timelines could be reached among an expert panel of orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons who manage Lisfranc injur

Two-week cumulative tendon load estimated from insole sensor contact forces is associated with plantar flexor function in Achilles tendinopathy.

Tendon loading dictates rehabilitation outcomes in Achilles tendinopathy but is difficult to track in the real world. In this study, we used instrumented insole sensors to monitor Achilles tendon load for two weeks in fifteen individuals with Achilles tendinopathy, who also completed assessments of their plantar flexor strength, dynamic function, and survey-based outcomes. We used insole data to estimate two types of cumulative Achilles tendon load: overall (≥ 0.3×body weight) and high-level load (≥ 3×body weight). We determined Pearson correlations between (1) overall and high-level tendon lo

Nanomaterial-Enhanced Conductive Hydrogels for Peripheral Nerve Repair: Biomimetic Design, Mechanisms, and Translational Challenges.

Peripheral nerve injuries often lead to permanent functional deficits, and current surgical or grafting techniques offer only partial recovery. Conductive hydrogels have recently emerged as a versatile platform that integrates tissue-like softness with electrical conductivity to actively promote nerve regeneration. By providing both mechanical support and electroactive cues, these materials enhance axonal extension, Schwann cell function, and neuroimmune modulation. Advances in hydrogel design-such as self-healing networks, injectability, and controlled release-further expand their therapeutic

Weightbearing Radiographic Predictors of Middle Facet Subluxation in Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity.

BACKGROUND: Middle facet subluxation (MFS) of the subtalar joint is a key indicator of peritalar subluxation in progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD). Although its assessment relies on weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT), it remains unclear which weightbearing radiographic (WBR) measurements correlate with MFS. We hypothesize that radiographic parameters assessing hindfoot alignment are correlated with MFS. METHODS: Seventy-three feet diagnosed with PCFD were evaluated using WBR and WBCT. Five parameters were measured in both modalities: talonavicular coverage (TNC) angle, hindfoo

Walking on the Achilles tendons.

BACKGROUND: The 'walking Achilles tendon' technique can be safely adopted when the initial percutaneous repair fails to achieve sufficient grip in the proximal stump of the ruptured tendon. In such instances, two additional stab wounds are produced proximal to the initial most proximal ones to increase the tendon area available for suture grip. SOURCES OF DATA: A total of 36 patients had who sustained Achilles tendon rupture were included in the present study, divided in two groups: 'the walking on the Achilles tendon group' and 'traditional repair' group. AREAS OF AGREEMENT: There was no di

Long-term functional outcomes of augmented primary repair using the peroneus brevis tendon for traumatic Achilles tendon ruptures: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Achilles tendon rupture is increasingly common and may result in significant functional impairment. Intraoperative findings such as frayed tendon ends, poor tendon quality, and larger tendon gaps may compromise the reliability of primary end-to-end repair alone. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mid- to long-term functional outcomes of primary repair with peroneus brevis augmentation in closed traumatic Achilles tendon ruptures with unfavorable intraoperative findings. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients with closed traumatic Achilles tendon ruptu

Surgical outcomes after superior peroneal retinaculum repair without bony procedures for chronic peroneal tendon instability: A consecutive case series.

BACKGROUND: Although bony procedures tailored to retromalleolar groove morphology have been advocated to reduce recurrence in chronic peroneal tendon instability, concerns remain regarding tendon adhesion and procedure-related morbidity. Consequently, it remains unclear whether isolated superior peroneal retinaculum repair alone is sufficient across different fibular morphologies, providing the rationale for the present study. PURPOSE: This study evaluated whether isolated superior peroneal retinaculum repair, without adjunctive bony procedures, can restore stability and function in chronic p
