In a 5-year period (1996-2001), the authors performed supramalleolar osteotomies for the correction of distal tibial mechanical malalignment of at least 10 degrees with concomitant pain and with or without radiographic evidence of arthritic changes. Thirty-two patients with 33 ruptures were available for comprehensive evaluation, which included a questionnaire, physical examination, and manual as well as objective (Kin-Com) strength testing. Problems of treatment of battle injuries of the ankle joint and foot are discussed. These injuries are characterized with severe disturbances of regional circulation and microcirculation causing hypoxia and metabolic disorders both in soft tissues and in bones. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of surgical management for acute Jones' fractures and Torg types I and II proximal diaphyseal stress fractures presenting acutely in both athletes and nonathletes. Twenty-two patients underwent intramedullary screw fixation between 1994 and 1999.
