The Evans osteotomy has become an important option in the surgical treatment of adult pes planus deformity of multiple causes. Despite its increasing popularity, however, no single study, to our knowledge, has thoroughly examined the structures at risk when performing the Evans osteotomy on the adult foot. We performed the Evans osteotomy on 20 adult cadaver specimens to determine which soft tissues and bony structures were endangered by the procedure. This is a case report of a 19-year-old woman who sustained multiple fractures including a right calcaneal fracture with extrusion of the posterior facet. The medial soft-tissue injury led to a full thickness skin loss. Despite loss of subtalar motion and decreased toe movement, she is satisfied with her result. The importance of the soft-tissue injuries, especially to the skin and tendons, associated with severely displaced calcaneal fracture dislocations is emphasized by this case report.

We retrospectively evaluated 109 magnetic resonance studies in patients with prior ankle sprains to investigate the frequency and pattern of bone bruises. Patterns of bone bruises were then correlated with the ligaments injured. We report about 48 patients who sustained a deceleration trauma after jumping out of a window. The average free fall height was 11.6 m. 45.8% of the patients suffered from psychic disorders. 12.5% were addicted to opiates or hallucinogenics. The lethality of the analysed group was 12.5%. Eighty missed musculoskeletal injuries in 51 patients in King Khalid University Hospital are analysed. The diagnostic failure rate was 0.6 per cent of all injured patients seen in the emergency room and 6 per cent of admissions under orthopaedic care. During a 4-year period, 35 nonconsecutive intraarticular fractures of the calcaneus were fixed with 2.7-mm minifragment plates and 3.5-mm small fragment screws through an extended lateral approach. Trauma to the lower extremity has been treated in the past by many specialties and subspecialties of medicine. No specialty, however, should be better qualified or trained in treating lower extremity trauma than the podiatrist. This study reviews some critical principles of acute trauma management and treatment. A simple algorithm is suggested. Three representative case studies are presented, demonstrating the importance and value of an established protocol.

Twenty-six patients with major fractures of the talus were studied to assess the long-term outcome. The patients were admitted to a university teaching hospital and major trauma center from 1983 to 1991. The study excluded isolated fractures of the talar dome and posterior tubercle.
