Do 3D-printed craniofacial fracture models improve learning outcomes in maxillofacial trauma? A multicenter cluster-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Teaching maxillofacial traumatology is challenging, as it requires not only theoretical knowledge but also advanced visuospatial skills. Conventional educational resources such as CT scans and diagrams offer limited support for understanding complex three-dimensional fracture patterns. Three-dimensional (3D) printing has emerged as a promising educational tool, yet its pedagogical impact in maxillofacial surgery remains insufficiently investigated. METHODS: This prospective, multicenter, cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted at three French medical faculties (Nice, Tou

Successful Use of Peripheral Nerve Blocks for Emergent Trauma Surgery in a Patient With Perioperative Myocardial Infarction: A Case Report.

Patients with concurrent trauma-related surgical emergencies and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (MI) present a unique anesthetic challenge, as damage control surgery and rapid resuscitation must take priority over timely coronary revascularization. During these surgeries, the physiologic insult from general anesthesia can be detrimental to a failing heart, so regional anesthesia techniques and their implications in trauma should be considered. We present a 62-year-old male motorcyclist with hypertension, diabetes, and coronary artery disease and a history of percutaneous coronary i

Rethinking circulatory management in thoracoabdominal aortic repair: split-body perfusion for continuous end-organ flow.

Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair involving the proximal descending thoracic aorta remains among the most technically demanding operations in cardiovascular surgery. Conventional approaches may require systemic hypothermia and periods of circulatory arrest to facilitate proximal aortic reconstruction, potentially exposing the brain, spinal cord, and abdominal viscera to ischemic injury. Strategies that permit complex proximal reconstruction while maintaining continuous perfusion to multiple vascular territories remain limited. We describe a split-body circulation technique designe

Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty for a Displaced Femoral Neck Fracture in an Above-the-Knee Amputee: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Femoral neck fractures in patients with ipsilateral above-knee amputations are uncommon and present unique diagnostic, biomechanical, and surgical challenges. The absence of a distal limb limits fracture reduction, intraoperative manipulation, and implant positioning, making standard treatment techniques difficult to perform. Although several fixation and arthroplasty strategies have been described for lower-extremity amputees, reports detailing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) for displaced femoral neck fractures in young above-knee amputees remain scarce. This case highligh

Efficacy of Pull-In Suture for Tendon Avulsion Injury Associated With Severe Forearm Open Fracture, Forearm Amputation, and Hand Amputation.

BACKGROUND: The pull-in suture technique is a method of primary tendon repair that involves pulling the distal stump of the ruptured tendon into the proximal muscle belly and suturing it to the intact muscle fascia for avulsion injuries at the musculotendinous junctions associated with severe open forearm trauma. The aim of this study is to report the clinical outcomes of the pull-in suture technique for musculotendinous avulsion injuries associated with severe open forearm trauma and to evaluate its effectiveness. METHODS: This study included patients who underwent pull-in suture repair for

Innovative Patient Positioning for Proximal Femoral Nailing in a Bilateral Above-knee Amputee: A Case Report and Technical Note.

INTRODUCTION: Proximal femur fractures in amputees present unique surgical challenges, primarily due to the inability to use standard traction table attachments. Bilateral above-knee amputations further add to this difficulty. The literature mainly describes unilateral amputees and delayed fractures in previously amputated limbs, while reports involving bilateral above-knee amputations are rare. The challenge becomes greater when the fracture and bilateral traumatic amputations occur in the same index trauma, because stump length, soft-tissue condition, fluoroscopic access and infection risk a

Associations of Lipid and Adiposity Indices with Vascular Aging Stages in a Multicenter Chinese Population.

OBJECTIVE: Vascular aging is a significant factor in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and serves as a predictor of all-cause mortality. Although disturbances in lipid metabolism are known risk factors, their links with standardized stages of vascular aging have not been thoroughly assessed in the Chinese population. This multicenter study analyzed the distribution of vascular aging stages in the China Standardized Vascular Aging Management Centers (VMCs). It investigated the relationships between lipid-adiposity-related indices and the progression of vascular aging. METHODS: A tota

Charting Variant Vascular Pathways in Musculoskeletal Imaging: Clinical and Surgical Implications.

Variant vascular pathways often present a challenge to a radiologist interpreting routine musculoskeletal imaging studies. In this article, the authors focus on the prevalence, anatomic landmarks for both normal and variant anatomy, clinical significance of the aberrant vasculature and anatomic associations, and potential risks of surgical complications. In the upper extremity, the persistent median artery and high division of the radial artery, known as the brachioradial artery, threaten median neuropathy or upper extremity ischemia. Pelvic trauma cases should be scrutinized for corona mortis

Post traumatic response of coelomocytes in the common sea star Echinastersepositus.

Regenerative dynamics stem from the coordination of pathways shared with processes of reproduction, post-embryonic development and any tissue mechanisms triggered to reconstitute damaged or lost cells and tissues. In living organisms, following a wound, immune cells are recruited to the injured area to defend against pathogens and promote the structural and functional restoration of the damaged tissue. This repair process is thoroughly investigated in sea stars throughout their development, from the initial repair stages to the actual regenerative phase. In this context, circulating coelomocyt

Anesthetic Management in Pediatric Limb Replantation After Traumatic Amputation.

For children who undergo major limb replantation, there is limited guidance for intraoperative anticoagulation protocols or vasopressor use to protect graft patency. We report a case of a 2-year-old female who underwent successful arm replantation after traumatic amputation with a course complicated by hemorrhage and hemodynamic instability. To protect vessel graft patency, we anticoagulated the patient and limited vasopressor use, both of which made resuscitation difficult. Despite these challenges, the replanted limb remained viable. Although guidelines are needed, this case highlights our e

Pediatric Off-Highway Vehicle Injuries and Fatalities: Exploring Risks, Prevention, and Safety.

Pediatric off-highway vehicle (OHV) injuries-including those from all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), utility terrain vehicles (UTVs), dirt bikes, golf carts, and snowmobiles-are a preventable public health issue. Between 2018 and 2020, children younger than 16 years of age accounted for 27% of the 500 000 OHV-related injuries reported by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. In this review, ATVs were the most frequently involved, with head and neck injuries (56%) and fractures (21%) being the most cited. UTV crashes resulted in severe fractures (45%) and amputations (4%), whereas snowmobiles ca

Profiling bone status indices reveals evidence of a low-turnover bone phenotype in type 2 diabetes: findings from the DiaFALL cohort.

UNLABELLED: People with type 2 diabetes have increased fracture risk despite preserved bone density. In this matched cross-sectional study, suppressed Bone Status Indices and exploratory sex-related hormonal associations were observed in T2D, indicating altered bone remodeling that is not captured by aBMD alone. These findings support the need for fracture risk assessment approaches that incorporate biochemical markers and potential sex-related differences. INTRODUCTION/AIM: People with type 2 diabetes (T2D) experience increased fracture risk despite preserved or higher areal bone mineral den
