Outcomes of Open, Percutaneous, and Closed Treatment of Isolated Mandibular Condylar Fractures.

Objectives Mandibular condylar fractures are common facial fractures, and the optimal balance between open and less invasive treatment remains debated. Readmission provides a reproducible hospital-utilization outcome that can be examined in large administrative datasets. This study aimed to compare 30-day readmission following open, percutaneous, and closed treatment of mandibular condylar fractures (MCF) using national inpatient databases. Methods We performed a retrospective database study using the 2016 Kids' Inpatient Database (KID) and the 2019-2020 National Readmissions Database (NRD). K

Stress Fracture Along with Transient Osteoporosis in a 72-Year-Old Female with Hip Pain: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: Transient hip osteoporosis (THO) is a rare, self-limiting condition characterized by acute hip pain and bone marrow edema. Although typically benign, THO may coexist with or predispose to femoral neck stress fractures, creating critical diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report a case of concurrent THO and femoral neck stress fracture in an elderly patient and discuss implications for management. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 72-year-old female presented with an eight-month history of persistent right hip pain. Initial radiographs suggested synovial chondromatosis; however, symptoms

Stress fracture of the neck of talus in an adolescent female with hypothyroidism: a case report of an unusual cause of ankle pain.

INTRODUCTION: Stress fractures occur when repetitive, cyclic loading exceeds the bone's capacity for remodeling. Talar stress fractures are rare, typically affecting the head or body, while involvement of the talar neck remains largely undocumented. Early diagnosis is essential, as even high-risk fractures can be managed successfully with conservative treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old hypothyroid female on levothyroxine therapy (37.5 mcg/day), undergoing intense training for military recruitment, presented with persistent anteromedial right ankle pain for 5 months. Examination reve

Total Hip Arthroplasty Using Temporary External Fixation for Limb Control in Short Transfemoral Amputation: A Case Report.

CASE: A 61-year-old man with a short residual limb after traumatic transfemoral amputation developed progressive ipsilateral hip osteoarthritis with severe pain during prosthetic gait. Intraoperative limb control was challenging because of the absence of a distal lever arm. A temporary circular external fixation system was applied to the proximal femur before preparation, enabling traction and rotation. Total hip arthroplasty was completed successfully. At 1 year postoperatively, the patient demonstrated substantial pain relief and improved prosthetic gait without instability or implant-relate

Intramedullary cement augmentation in locking plate fixation for Neer four-part proximal humeral fractures: a technique for preventing early mechanical failure.

BACKGROUND: Locking plate fixation for Neer four-part proximal humeral fractures is frequently complicated by varus collapse and screw cut-out, leading to mechanical failure, particularly in osteoporotic bone. This study evaluates the clinical and radiographic outcomes of a modified technique involving intramedullary polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement augmentation applied during its thread-forming phase to create an internal support structure. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 66 consecutive patients with Neer four-part proximal humeral fractures treated between January 2023

Parallel versus non-parallel cannulated screw fixation for femoral neck fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Femoral neck fracture (FNF) is a common type of hip fracture, for which cannulated screw fixation is a primary internal fixation method. The optimal configuration for cannulated screw fixation remains controversial, with debate primarily focused on two approaches: parallel fixation configuration (PFC) versus non-parallel fixation configuration (NFC). The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of two configurations in the treatment of femoral neck fractures. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library,

Re-Evaluation of the Ideal Injury to Flap Time Frame for Lower Extremity Free Flap Reconstruction: Is 72 h Still the Gold Standard?

BACKGROUND: Traumatic lower extremity injuries often require free tissue transfer (FTT) for limb salvage when local tissue is insufficient. Traditionally, reconstruction within 72 h has been considered optimal; however, advancements in wound management and perioperative care have challenged this paradigm. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate outcomes of lower extremity FTT based on time from injury to reconstruction. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on patients undergoing lower extremity FTT after trauma at a single Level 1 trauma center (2014-2022). Patients were grouped by time from injury

Risk factors for post-traumatic lymphedema after open fractures of the lower leg: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic lymphedema (PTL) is an underrecognized complication of severe limb trauma and is characterized by persistent limb swelling. Patients with open fractures of the lower leg may be more susceptible to PTL, and clinical factors such as extensive soft-tissue injury, wound infection, and repeated surgical procedures may be associated with lymphatic injury and local inflammation. However, the clinical factors associated with PTL in this population remain unclear. This study aimed to identify factors associated with PTL after open fractures of the lower leg. METHODS: We retr
