Prevalence of intestinal parasites in pre-school and school-aged Iranian children: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are a major public health challenge for children in low- and middle-income countries, linked to malnutrition, stunting, and cognitive deficits. This meta-analysis estimated IPIs prevalence in Iranian preschool and school-aged children and identified associated factors. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed across five international bibliographic databases (Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Google Scholar) to identify articles published between January 2000 and May 2025. The study protocol was in accordance with the r

Multiscale epidemiology of gastrointestinal nematode infections in small ruminants: field evidence from Inner Mongolia and a national meta-analysis in China.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are among the most important parasites constraining small-ruminant production. However, epidemiological evidence in China remains fragmented because existing studies differ substantially in geographic coverage, host species, sampling periods, diagnostic approaches, and ecological settings. METHODS: We applied a multiscale framework integrating a regional survey in Inner Mongolia with a national systematic review and meta-analysis. In the regional survey, 2,084 fecal samples were collected from sheep aged 6-12 months in Ulanqab, Alxa, and Ordos fro

Optimizing Catheter Removal in Amebic Liver Abscess: A Simplified Protocol for Faster Recovery.

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) is widely used in the management of large amebic liver abscesses (ALA). However, considerable variation exists in catheter removal practices, and concerns regarding residual cavities often result in prolonged catheterization and hospital stay. This study assessed whether an early catheter removal strategy could improve clinical outcomes without increasing complications. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 40 adult patients with uncomplicated ALA requiring percutaneous drainage were enrolled. Catheter removal was attempted after

Case Report: mNGS-negative Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome with small bowel obstruction as the initial manifestation in a glucocorticoid-exposed COPD patient: a fatal case.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome (SHS) is a life-threatening condition in immunocompromised hosts with an extremely high mortality rate. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) demonstrates limited sensitivity for parasitic detection, and its clinical value remains to be fully elucidated. The conventional microscopy remains an indispensable tool for the diagnosis of parasitic infections. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 73-year-old male patient with a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cerebral infarction presented with abdo

Pooled prevalence and associated study-level factors of Echinococcus metacestode infection in ruminants in China: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Ruminant echinococcosis represents an important livestock-associated component of Echinococcus transmission in China, but national evidence on host-specific prevalence and associated study-level factors remains fragmented. This systematic review and meta-analysis estimated the pooled prevalence of Echinococcus metacestode infection in Chinese small ruminants and bovines and identified significant associated study-level factors. Six databases were searched from inception to April 10, 2026, following PRISMA guidelines. Cross-sectional studies reporting both examined and positive animals were inc

Host Species and Meteorological Influences on the Prevalence of Babesia microti (Aconoidasida: Piroplasmida) in Wild Rodents: Insights From a Meta-Analysis in Japan.

Rodents play a central role as reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens, yet the ecological and meteorological factors affecting pathogen prevalence remain unclear. In this study, a meta-analysis was used to evaluate the influence of host species and meteorological factors on the prevalence of Babesia microti in two common Japanese field mice, Apodemus speciosus and A. argenteus. The data were collected from seven published studies conducted across Japan. To examine the effects of total annual precipitation, average annual temperature, and host species, generalized linear mixed models were employed. T

Diagnostic Accuracy of a Novel Chemiluminescent Immunoassay for Strongyloides stercoralis in a Non-Endemic Clinical Setting.

Background/Objectives:Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil-transmitted helminth that can cause severe disease in immunocompromised individuals. In non-endemic clinical settings, recommended diagnostic strategies rely on serology alone or in combination with a sensitive fecal test, maximizing sensitivity to avoid missed infections. The S. stercoralis VirClia® IgG monotest (Vircell, Spain) is a novel automated chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) that detects IgG antibodies against the recombinant NIE and SsIR antigens. This study evaluated its diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity and specificity) in

PtRTP1, an Effector of Puccinia triticina, Contributes to Virulence in Wheat.

Effector proteins are key virulence factors of obligate parasitic fungi during infection. Wheat leaf rust by Puccinia triticina is a widespread destructive disease drastically limiting wheat production, while the biological role of its effector is still elusive. PtRTP1 is a homolog of Uf-RTP1p, one of the earliest effector proteins verified to localize at the host-pathogen interface. Clarifying PtRTP1 function helps uncover rust pathogenic mechanisms; hence, we cloned PtRTP1 from P. triticina. The gene has a 1453 bp DNA sequence and a 777 bp CDS, encoding a protein with a 23 aa signal peptide,

Septic arthritis attributed to a spider bite - a case report and review of the literature.

Individuals who travel to tropical or subtropical areas are exposed to various infectious, environ-mental, and climatic risk factors, as well as traffic accidents, security problems, natural disasters, and direct contact with potentially dangerous plants or animals. Accidental bites by venomous spiders during long journeys are always dangerous to health and life, but it is not usually recognized that nonvenomous spiders also pose such a substantial threat to the lives of local inhabitants and travelers. Here, we present an unusual case of a 41-year-old male patient who was admitted to the Univ

[Cutaneous larva migrans].

Cutaneous larva migrans is the most frequent parasitic tropical dermatosis imported by travelers returning from tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Epidemiologically, this skin condition is predominantly acquired during beach stays, with high-risk areas including Southeast Asia, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. The underlying cause is an infection with animal hookworm larvae, most commonly Ancylostoma braziliense, which are shed in the feces of infected dogs and cats. Because humans act as accidental hosts, the larvae penetrate the epidermis but are unable to mature into a

Extraction-free LAMP-LFD assay for early diagnosis of congenital Chagas disease directly from neonatal dried blood spots.

BACKGROUND: Vertical transmission is a major driver of new Chagas disease cases. Early diagnosis in newborns is essential for effective treatment; however, conventional screening limitations and high patient attrition lead to severe under-registration. Simplified molecular tools can substantially improve early detection and treatment access. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We developed a simplified loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP)-based assay targeting the repetitive satellite DNA of Trypanosoma cruzi for qualitative detection in newborn dried blood spots (DBS). 4‑O‑Allyl Derivative of Natural Licarin A Exhibits Selective In Vitro Activity against Toxoplasma gondii Tachyzoites.

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan responsible for toxoplasmosis, a widespread parasitic disease that poses a serious health threat, especially to immunocompromised patients and pregnant women. Current therapeutic options remain unsatisfactory because they are associated with adverse effects and do not eliminate latent infections, emphasizing the need for new antitoxoplasmic agents. In the present study, the natural neolignan (-)-licarin A (1), isolated from the Brazilian species Nectandra oppositifolia, together with three semisynthetic derivatives, 4-O-methyl (1a), 4-O-

A stochastic delay framework for East Coast fever dynamics with integrated vaccination, treatment, and acaricide strategies.

East Coast fever (ECF) is a severe tick-borne disease of cattle in Africa caused by Theileria parva and transmitted primarily by the brown ear tick, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. This study develops a stochastic delay differential equation model for ECF transmission between cattle and ticks by incorporating vaccination, treatment, natural recovery, carrier-mediated transmission, and acaricide-induced tick removal. Two biologically distinct delays are included: a cattle-side delay representing the incubation or prepatent period and a tick-side delay representing parasite development within the

From environmental exposure to disease burden: Institutional capacity, structural vulnerability, and global malaria inequality, 2000-2023.

Malaria burden varies markedly between countries with similar environmental conditions. We examined national associations between malaria incidence, institutional capacity, economic development, structural vulnerability and selected environmental indicators during 2000-2023. An ecological panel comprised 4,382 complete country-years across 186 countries. Year-fixed-effects models related log(incidence + 1) to standardised predictors, with country-clustered uncertainty. Vulnerability was positively associated with incidence (β = 0.931, p = .007), whereas GDP per capita was inversely associated

Influence of ecological and management factors on Toxoplasma gondii infection in small ruminants in Algeria.

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic protozoan of major concern for small-ruminant production and public health. This study is among the first to simultaneously compare T. gondii seroprevalence across contrasting Algerian bioclimatic zones. In summer 2024, a cross-sectional study was conducted across 82 herds comprising 4,022 small ruminants in three provinces of central Algeria (Blida, Médéa, Djelfa), representing contrasting bioclimatic zones (humid, semi-arid, and arid). Blood samples were collected from 1,052 animals older than six months to assess the apparent seroprevalence of T. gondii and a
