RNA-Seq Reveals Th17 Cell Differentiation Pathway as a Mechanism of Radiation-Induced Brain Injury.

Radiotherapy is a prevalent therapeutic modality for head and neck malignancies; however, it invariably results in radiation-induced damage to normal cerebral tissue, culminating in radiation-induced brain injury (RBI). Despite extensive research on radiation-induced neuroinflammation, the association between RBI and the Th17 cell differentiation pathway remains inadequately understood. C57BL/6 mice underwent a single administration of 30 Gy cranial irradiation to develop the RBI model. Cognitive function was evaluated through the Morris water maze (MWM), open field test, novel object recognit

Post-thyroidectomy pain relief is enhanced by wound infiltration. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

INTRODUCTION: Thyroidectomy is a common surgical procedure. Traditional options for pain management, such as analgesics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), are limited by their side effects. Surgical wound infiltration with local anesthetics has the potential to reduce the need for analgesics in a number of surgical procedures. This systematic review and meta-analysis wanted to resolve these concerns and assess the efficacy of WI in the management of postoperative pain after thyroidectomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The review adhered to Cochrane Collaboration and PRISMA stand

African primary research publications in plastic surgery: A PRISMA-S-compliant systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Plastic surgery (PS) in Africa is a relatively young surgery specialty, and the number of available plastic surgeons on average is one or two surgeons per country in many African low-income countries. This systematic review aims to geographically map the research activities through scientific publications of African PS centres, between February 2012-February 2023. METHODS: We searched four literature databases (Medline, Embase, Google Scholar and African Journal Online) and did a manual search. We included case reports, randomised controlled trials, and clinical, comparative, obse

Transoral Ultrasound-Guided Core Biopsy for Minimally Invasive Sampling of Hard-to-Access Oropharyngeal Cancers.

Pathological diagnosis plays a pivotal role in risk classification and personalized treatment planning for patients with oropharyngeal cancers. However, challenges arise in cases involving trismus and tumors with submucosal spread, hindering traditional endoscopic biopsies and open incisional biopsies. In this study, we examined the clinical and pathological data of patients with trismus who underwent transoral ultrasound-guided core biopsy (USCB) for their oropharyngeal tumors, comparing this method with existing diagnostic approaches. Seventeen patients presenting with oropharyngeal tumors a

Epidemiological Principles in Claims of Causality: An Enquiry into Repetitive Head Impacts (RHI) and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).

Determining whether repetitive head impacts (RHI) cause the development of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)-neuropathological change (NC) and whether pathological changes cause clinical syndromes are topics of considerable interest to the global sports medicine community. In 2022, an article was published that used the Bradford Hill criteria to evaluate the claim that RHI cause CTE. The publication garnered international media attention and has since been promoted as definitive proof that causality has been established. Our counterpoint presents an appraisal of the published article in t

Aesthetic Approaches to Zygomatic Fracture Management: Achieving Optimal Outcomes With Minimal Scarring.

The zygomaticomaxillary complex is integral to facial aesthetics and is frequently involved in facial fractures. These injuries often necessitate surgical intervention, with open reduction and internal fixation being the standard treatment. This article presents a novel philosophy for managing zygomatic fractures, emphasizing the "Scarless Surgery" technique. The authors' approach prioritizes minimal osteosynthesis material and fixation points while utilizing the least visible surgical access. For isolated zygomatic arch fractures, an intraoral technique is preferred, whereas the frontozygomat

Treatment of Post Neck Radiation Carotid Blowout Syndrome with Viabahn Stent Placement.

Carotid blowout syndrome (CBS) is a critical and often fatal complication associated with head and neck malignancies. CBS is characterized by 3 stages as follows: threatened, impending, and acute rupture or hemorrhage. The condition is notably linked with a history of radiotherapy for head and neck cancers, with an incidence of approximately 3-4% among those who have received such treatments. Historically, surgical management of CBS has involved open surgical ligation. However, advancements in endovascular techniques, including endovascular destructive procedures (e.g., coil embolization) and

Ipsilateral femoral head and intertrochanteric fractures with posterior subluxation of the hip: A rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: Hip fractures are common in elderly patients, often accompanied by comorbidities. These fractures can be combined with other injuries, such as a femoral head, neck, or shaft dislocation. The cause of this complex injury is not well-established, but factors like high-energy trauma or falls from a certain height may contribute. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old man presented with an ipsilateral femoral head and left intertrochanteric fracture with posterior hip subluxation after a 3-m fall. This rare and complex injury was diagnosed using X-rays and CT scans. Due to the risk of com

Full SMAS: Endoscopy-Assisted Full Facial Rejuvenation.

BACKGROUND: Every region of the face may bear the signs of aging. Treating isolated areas without adequate anatomical knowledge can lead to incomplete or artificial-looking results and decrease patient satisfaction. The authors' "Full SMAS" technique for complete rejuvenation addresses the anatomical continuity of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS)-platysma to the deep-plane suspension of the face. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of endoscopic techniques to traditional facelift and neck lift procedures. Procedures treating from the frontal and

Traumatic Vocal Fold Paralysis from Fishbone Foreign Body: Diagnosis and Management.

Fish bone foreign bodies (FFBs) are relatively common but can present diagnostic challenges. Herein, we report a case of a 43-year-old female who initially presented to the Emergency Department with fever and throat discomfort after a choking incident, which led to a misdiagnosis of a viral infection after negative chest X-ray findings. Persistent symptoms, including new-onset vocal cord paralysis, prompted further investigation and an otolaryngology - head and neck surgery referral one month later. During the otolaryngology visit eight months after the initial incident, laryngoscopy revealed
