FRACTURE-DISLOCATIONS OF THE ELBOW: CAN THEY INFLUENCE THE PATTERN FRACTURE OF RADIAL HEAD?

INTRODUCTION: Radial head fractures are consistently part of a terrible triad of the elbow and can occur in association with Monteggia fracture-dislocations, transolecranon fractures, and their variations. Understanding the degree of comminution of the radial head fracture and the location of fragments determines the course of action to be taken. OBJECTIVES: To correlate fracture-dislocations with the pattern of radial head fracture (number of fragments) and involvement in the proximal radioulnar region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study (level II) of patients undergoing surgery f

Orthognathic surgery with removal of lipoma in the asymmetric mandibular prognathism of a patient with a mandibular bone defect due to intramuscular lipoma on the medial aspect of the ramus: a case report.

Lipomas, the most common soft-tissue mesenchymal neoplasms in adults, are characterized by the proliferation of mature white adipocytes without cytologic atypia. Lipomas are rarely observed in the head and neck region. We present a case of resection and orthognathic surgical removal of an intramuscular lipoma of the mandible with involvement of the mandibular ramus and condylar head and neck. An 18-year-old female patient was referred to our hospital for orthognathic surgery for the management of facial asymmetry and mandibular prognathism. The patient did not present with facial swelling, pai

Characteristics of equestrian accidents and injuries leading to permanent medical impairment.

BACKGROUND: Equestrian sports, also referred to as equestrianism, is practiced all over the world and a popular leisure activity in Sweden. Equestrianism is the country's second-largest youth sport, and previous studies indicate that accidents are common in equestrianism. However, few previous studies have examined acute equestrian injuries leading to permanent medical impairment (PMI). METHODS: By using nationwide insurance data comprising all injured equestrians registered in the Swedish Equestrian Federation, the aim was to analyse characteristics of equestrian accidents and particularly i

Worsening orbital roof "blow-in" fractures following traumatic brain injury: A report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Orbital roof fractures are often the result of high-velocity collisions and are seen in 1-9% of patients with craniofacial trauma. Although the majority of orbital roof fractures are displaced superiorly, a subset results in inferior displacement of fracture fragments, posing a risk for muscle/nerve entrapment and possible blindness. Many of these patients have severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and, in addition to orbital fractures, also have elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). Management of depressed orbital roof fractures in the setting of severe TBI with elevated ICP represe

Predicting functional outcome after nonoperative treatment of proximal humeral fractures involving the surgical neck.

BACKGROUND: In nonoperative treated proximal humeral fractures (PHFs), uncertainty remains regarding functional outcome. Therefore, the aim was to identify predictors of functional outcome following nonoperative treatment of PHF and to develop predictive models. METHODS: Adults with a nonoperatively treated PHF involving the surgical neck were followed for 1 year. Radiographic parameters included fracture configuration, displacement, bone quality, and the critical shoulder angle. The neck-shaft angle and humeral head offset assessed displacement. The greater tuberosity index (GTI) addressed g

Intraoperative navigation in craniofacial surgery.

Craniofacial surgery requires comprehensive anatomical knowledge of the head and neck to ensure patient safety and surgical precision. Over recent decades, there have been significant advancements in imaging techniques and the development of real-time surgical navigation systems. Intraoperative navigation technology aligns surgical instruments with imaging-derived information on patient anatomy, enabling surgeons to closely follow preoperative plans. This system functions as a radiologic map, improving the accuracy of instrument placement and minimizing surgical complications. The introduction

Case Report: Facial fracture sequelae: the importance of using a specific customized implant (PSI) for orbital reconstruction.

The reconstruction of orbital fracture sequelae is a major challenge due to concerns regarding surgical approach and implant stability. Few anatomical sites of such minute size have presented with as much variation in treatment as the orbital floor fractures and related sequelae. Our patient developed sequelae of an orbital fracture over the last 3 years, presenting with dystopia, ophthalmoplegia, and diplopia in the supra- and lateroversion and aesthetic impairment. The variety of implant materials for reconstruction after orbital fractures is extensive, and the decision as to which material

Head-to-neck screw fixation and radial head arthroplasty result in similar postoperative outcomes for low-comminuted radial head fractures with neck involvement.

BACKGROUND: Fixation of radial head fractures with neck involvement presents challenges. It remains unclear whether the outcomes of head-to-neck screw fixation are similar to those of arthroplasty in this scenario. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the clinical outcomes of these two methods for treating such fractures. METHODS: Demographic data, fracture type, number of fragments, and concomitant injuries were recorded. Range of motion, Visual Analogue Scale for pain, Mayo Elbow Performance Score, and Quick-Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand at three-year follow-u

Direct Anterior Approach "No Trial Reduction Technique" in Bipolar Hemiarthroplasty for Treatment of Osteoporotic Femoral Neck Fracture: Surgical Techniques and Case Series.

Bipolar hemiarthroplasty (BHA) for osteoporotic femoral neck fractures has a risk of proximal femoral fracture during trials, especially with larger trial bipolar shells. This study introduces a novel technique for BHA via the direct anterior approach, aiming to reduce trial use and lower the risk of iatrogenic femoral fractures. The "no trial reduction technique" involves positioning only the trial neck segment against the acetabulum's me-dial wall, without the bipolar shell and trial head. Fluoros-copy measures limb length differences to determine optimal femoral head and bipolar shell thick
