Impact of Illicit Drug Use on Facial Fracture Patterns and Hospital Resource Utilization.

INTRODUCTION: Facial trauma is a public health concern, with reports of about 25% of all traumas having a component of facial injury. Alcohol and illicit drug use have previously been shown to exacerbate the severity of trauma injuries. This study investigates the relationship between illicit drug use and clinical outcomes amongst patients presenting with facial fracture injuries. METHODS: A retrospective multicenter cohort study through the TriNetX database was performed. Drug Involved Facial fracture injury with illicit drug use (DIFFI+) was compared to a Non-Drug Involved Facial Fracture I

Superior Gluteal Artery Perforation Following Girdlestone Resection Arthroplasty: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Girdlestone excision arthroplasty is a surgical procedure for managing severe hip joint pathology, involving the removal of the femoral head and neck. Despite its utility, the Girdlestone procedure carries significant risks, including vascular complications. This report highlights a previously unreported complication: Post-operative hemorrhage from the superior gluteal artery (SGA). CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old female underwent this procedure after recurrent infections and instability following hip hemiarthroplasty. The patient who underwent a Girdlestone procedure experienced lif

Proximal Femur Stabilization Using Prolene Mesh in Girdlestone Resection Arthroplasty: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The Girdlestone resection arthroplasty procedure is one of the options for treating an infected hip arthroplasty. It is a surgical procedure that involves resection of the head and neck of the femur, resulting in pseudarthrosis of the hip joint. This is often kept as a last resort for patients with significant co-morbidities or when other treatments have been ineffective. This procedure should be considered a salvage procedure, primarily aimed at pain relief and infection control. CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 73-year-old male who sustained a fracture of the neck of the fem

Subcondylar Fossa Reconstruction in Pediatric Patients Following Malunion of Proximal Phalangeal Neck Fractures: Technique and Case Series.

The subcondylar fossa is the bony depression between the articulating surface of the proximal and middle phalanges of the fingers that allows for full flexion at the proximal interphalangeal joint. A bony block may form in the subcondylar fossa secondary to the malunion of a proximal phalangeal neck fracture. If there is a substantial loss of flexion, surgical correction could be indicated. Corrective osteotomy is technically challenging in the proximal interphalangeal joint area as the phalangeal head is small, creating fixation challenges and carrying the risk of avascular necrosis and joint

A Rare Case of Ipsilateral Radial Head, Neck, and Shaft Fracture With Intact Ulna in a Young Adult.

Fractures involving multiple levels of the radius are rare and often associated with ulnar involvement or distal radius injury. We report a previously undocumented injury pattern: a comminuted ipsilateral fracture of the radial head, neck, and shaft, with an intact ulna, in a 28-year-old male following road traffic trauma. The classification system of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen (AO), also known as the Working Group for Osteosynthesis Questions, does not include this type of fracture configuration. The patient underwent open reduction and internal fixation using a headless

Comparing the Clinical and Radiological Outcome of Femoral Neck System Versus Dynamic Hip Screw in Femoral Neck Fractures.

Purpose Since its introduction in 1964, the dynamic hip screw (DHS) has remained a mainstay in treatment, offering reliable fixation, high union rates, and early weight-bearing. However, its invasive nature poses a risk of compromising the femoral head's blood supply. On the other hand, multiple cancellous cannulated screw (CCS) allow for a minimally invasive approach but often limit early mobilization. In 2018, DePuy Synthes, Switzerland, introduced the femoral neck system (FNS), promising stability of the fixation equivalent to DHS while maintaining the minimally invasive nature of the proce

Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Electrocardiography Identifies Osteoporosis and has Prognostic Value.

Background: Osteoporosis, a common disease leading to weakened bones and increased fracture risk, often goes undiagnosed until a fracture occurs. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the current gold standard for bone mineral density (BMD) measurement, but it has limitations. Recent studies reported Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled Electrocardiography (ECG) for disease screening. We hypothesized that AI ECG could serve as a screening tool for osteoporosis. Objective: This study aimed to develop a deep learning model (DLM) to identify osteoporosis using EKG features and to assess its p

Effects of different reduction patterns on stress distribution in patients with intertrochanteric fractures with intramedullary nail fixation: a finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Positive medial cortical support is a reliable fracture reduction pattern, but existing research on its use is mainly qualitative. We conducted this finite element analysis study to quantitatively evaluate the usefulness of positive cortical support for intertrochanteric fracture reduction. METHODS: Twenty-five models of intramedullary nail fixation for AO type 31-A1.2 intertrochanteric fractures subjected to different reduction patterns were established. The peak von Mises stress at the femoral fracture surface, proximal intersection of the intramedullary nail, and distal intersec

What is the appropriate axial position in cannulated screw fixation for femoral neck fractures? A finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cannulated screw fixation is a common surgical treatment for femoral neck fractures; however, there is limited information on the optimal axial position of the screws. Herein, we aimed to investigate the impact of axial screw position on surgical stability in femoral neck fracture models fixed with three cannulated screws. METHODS: Eighteen finite element models (FEMs) replicating Pauwels type II femoral neck fractures were constructed and tested using nine normal and nine osteoporotic bone models. Each FEM simulated combinations of three different screw positions (anterior, centr

Injuries in Breaking: An Overview and Synthesis of Case Reports and Letters to the Editor.

Introduction: Breaking, also known as breakdancing, has evolved from street culture to a structured sport, debuting in the 2024 Olympics. Despite its popularity, limited data exists on injury prevalence, types, and risk factors associated with acute and overuse injuries sustained from breaking. While existing studies offer insights into common injury patterns, they provide limited analysis of the specific mechanisms behind these injuries. This overview aims to classify acute and overuse injuries in breaking, reviewing 50 years of literature to identify risk factors and high-risk movements. Met
