Trends of intentional drug overdose among youth: a population-based cohort study.

Background: Intentional overdose is the commonest form of self-harm in adolescents globally. We explored temporal trends in intentional overdose among youth. Methods: Using multiple linked healthcare databases, we conducted a population-based cohort study in Ontario, Canada, from 2002 to 2015. We included all patients aged 8 to 19 years who presented to an emergency department (ED) or were hospitalized for intentional overdose, stratifying by age and agent(s) consumed. We determined the annual rate of intentional overdose over time. For context, we contrasted these data against the annual rate

Axillo-subclavian dissection and pseudoaneurysm following inferior glenohumeral dislocation: Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Axillo-subclavian arterial injuries are generally associated with penetrating trauma. On rare occasion, blunt mechanisms can cause these injuries in the setting of high-energy trauma, humeral head or neck fractures, and severe glenohumeral dislocations. Glenohumeral dislocations sustained from ground-level falls are generally reduced in the emergency department without associated morbidity. PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 80-year-old woman presented with an inferior glenohumeral dislocation after a ground-level fall that was found to be complicated by axillary dissection, pseudoaneurys

What Factors Are Associated With Disability After Upper Extremity Injuries? A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial factors are key determinants of health after upper extremity injuries. However, a systematic review is needed to understand which psychosocial factors are most consistently associated with disability and how the language, conceptualization, and types of measures used to assess disability impact these associations in upper extremity injuries. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What factors are most consistently associated with disability after upper extremity injuries in adults? (2) What are the trends in types of outcome measures and conceptualization of disability in patients'

Nerve injury in severe trauma with upper extremity involvement: evaluation of 49,382 patients from the TraumaRegister DGU® between 2002 and 2015.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) as an adjunct lesion in patients with upper extremity trauma has not been investigated in a Central European setting so far, despite of its devastating long-term consequences. This study evaluates a large multinational trauma registry for prevalence, mechanisms, injury severity and outcome characteristics of upper limb nerve lesions. METHODS: After formal approval the TraumaRegister DGU® (TR-DGU) was searched for severely injured cases with upper extremity involvement between 2002 and 2015. Patients were separated into two cohorts with regard to prese

Injuries associated with bunk beds occurring at schools: results using a US national data base.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate bunk bed injuries occurring across all educational institutions using a national data base. METHODS: National Electronic Injury Surveillance System data for the years 2006-2015 associated with bunk beds was analysed. RESULTS: There were an estimated 639 700 emergency department (ED) visits for bunk bed injuries; 1.3% occurred at school. Those occurring at school were older than those not at school (18.2 vs 12.8 years), and more commonly female (56.4% vs 40.6%), Caucasian (91.7% vs 68.3%) and associated with alcohol (10.8% vs 0.4%). For those occurring at school, the

Trauma in elderly patients: a study of prevalence, comorbidities and gender differences.

BACKGROUND: Group B beta-hemolytic streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae) has been traditionally considered a major pathogen in neonates and pregnant women. However, there is accumulating concern about its significance in non-pregnant adults too. MATERIAL/METHODS: To study Streptococcus agalactiae infections in non-pregnant adults in a 354-bed general tertiary center in Athens, Greece, we analyzed retrospectively collected data from patients with Streptococcus agalactiae isolates during a 5-year period. RESULTS: Sixty-nine strains were isolated from specimens of 65 non-pregnant adults (42

Large-scale GWAS identifies multiple loci for hand grip strength providing biological insights into muscular fitness.

Hand grip strength is a widely used proxy of muscular fitness, a marker of frailty, and predictor of a range of morbidities and all-cause mortality. To investigate the genetic determinants of variation in grip strength, we perform a large-scale genetic discovery analysis in a combined sample of 195,180 individuals and identify 16 loci associated with grip strength (P<5 × 10-8) in combined analyses. A number of these loci contain genes implicated in structure and function of skeletal muscle fibres (ACTG1), neuronal maintenance and signal transduction (PEX14, TGFA, SYT1), or monogenic syndromes

Reference equations for handgrip strength: Normative values in young adult and middle-aged subjects.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Handgrip strength (HS) has been widely used as a functionality parameter of the upper limbs (UL) and general health. The measurement of HS by dynamometry is a low cost, non-invasive method of simple applicability, widely used in pulmonary rehabilitation and in critical care units. However, there are no reports in the literature of reference equations for the Brazilian population involving young and middle-aged adults. The aim of this study was to establish reference equations to predict normal HS for young and middle-aged adults through demographic and anthropometric data.

Predictors of return to work following motor vehicle related orthopaedic trauma.

BACKGROUND: Work disability following motor vehicle related orthopaedic trauma is a significant contributor to the burden of injury and disease. Early identification of predictors for return to work (RTW) is essential for developing effective interventions to prevent work disability. The study aim was to determine the predictors (including compensation related factors) of time to RTW following motor vehicle related orthopaedic trauma. METHODS: Admitted patients were recruited prospectively from two trauma hospitals with upper and/or lower extremity fractures following a motor vehicle crash. B

Analysis of occupant kinematics and dynamics in nearside oblique impacts.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to analyze the kinematics and dynamics of restrained postmortem human surrogates (PMHS) exposed to a nearside oblique impact and the injuries that were found after the tests. METHODS: Three male PMHS of similar age (64 ± 4 years) and anthropometry (weight: 61 ± 9.6 kg; stature: 172 ± 2.7 cm) were exposed to a 30° nearside oblique impact at 34 km/h. The test fixture approximated the seating position of a front seat occupant. A rigid seat was designed to match the pelvic displacement in a vehicle seat. Surrogates were restrained by a 3-point seat belt

The association between seeking financial compensation and injury recovery following motor vehicle related orthopaedic trauma.

BACKGROUND: Motor vehicle related moderate-severe orthopaedic trauma has a major impact on the burden of injury. In Australia, all states and territories provide access to financial compensation following injury in a motor vehicle crash. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of seeking financial compensation (i.e., making a claim) on injury recovery following motor vehicle related moderate-severe orthopaedic trauma. METHODS: Patients admitted with upper/lower extremity fractures after a motor vehicle crash were recruited from two trauma hospitals. Baseline data were collected

[Hand injuries from combat sports].

BACKGROUND: Each year 3.1% of German adults suffer from accidents related to sports and 75% of the injured athletes are male between 20 and 29 years old. The upper limbs are affected in more than 20% of cases and one third of these injuries involve the hands and fingers. OBJECTIVES: More than half a million athletes are organized in combat sport associations in Germany with an increasing trend. Combat sports are commonly said to have a high risk of injuries to the hand. The aim of this study was to test this hypothesis as well as to describe typical hand injuries associated with combat sports
