Chewing lice are among the most significant ectoparasites affecting poultry, causing irritation, anemia, and reduced productivity, thereby posing economic and welfare challenges for poultry farmers. Their impact is particularly pronounced in sub-Saharan Africa, where poultry production is predominantly free-range with limited biosecurity, which increases exposure to infestation. This review was conducted to determine the epidemiology of chewing lice species of poultry in sub-Saharan African countries. A search of peer-reviewed literature on the epidemiology of chewing lice species of poultry w

Feline leishmaniosis (FeL) is still considered an emerging and neglected disease. Cats, once considered accidental hosts, are now recognized as adjunctive reservoirs of the disease, especially in areas where canine (CanL) and human (HumL) leishmaniosis are widespread. Although often asymptomatic, infected cats could contribute to the transmission cycle of the parasite. Recent studies in Campania (Italy) have found a significant prevalence of feline infection, indicating the need to implement diagnostic and surveillance protocols to prevent the spread of the disease. The aim of the study was to

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa, Plasmodium falciparum is unequivocally responsible for almost all malaria cases and deaths. However, the long-neglected human P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae parasites also emerge as relevant, though their prevalence and contribution to the burden of the disease are very poorly appreciated. This study aimed to bridge this gap and surveyed the circulation of non-falciparum malaria parasites among febrile patients in four regions in south Senegal.
METHODS: Blood samples were obtained from 1990 febrile patients during the malaria transmission seasons of 202

Current treatment for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is associated with toxicity, a high cost, and the emergence of drug-resistant parasite strains. Moreover, no human vaccine is available. In this context, immunotherapeutics combining vaccination and chemotherapy have emerged as a promising alternative. In this study, we combined a recombinant chimeric protein (ChimT) with the adjuvant 3-O-desacyl-monophosphoryl lipid A (MPLA) and the antileishmanial drug miltefosine (Milt) and used it to treat Leishmania infantum-infected mice. Parasitological, immunological, and toxicological assays were perfo

We investigated tick infestations in stray dogs from Chișinău, the capital of the Republic of Moldova, focusing on tick species distribution, and pathogen infection rates. Ticks were collected from 232 stray dogs across six major urban parks in 2021-2022. A total of 443 ticks were collected, belonging to five species: Ixodes ricinus (43.8%), Dermacentor reticulatus (35.2%), Dermacentor marginatus (20.5%), Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. and Haemaphysalis punctata with only 1 specimen. Notably, 92.5% of ticks were adults, while only 7% were nymphs and <1% were larvae. On average, 44.4% of stray d

Toxoplasma gondii is the most common infectious cause of posterior uveitis in immunocompetent adults. While the parasite is typically acquired through ingestion of undercooked meat or contaminated food and water, unpasteurized goat milk has been identified as a less frequent but plausible source of infection. Coinfections in ocular toxoplasmosis are rare, and the role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in these coinfections remains poorly understood. We report the case of a 70-year-old immunocompetent male presenting with severe, refractory panuveitis in the left eye. Initial serologic testing confir

Previous studies have evaluated the association between different blood groups and human infection with Toxoplasma gondii. No similar studies exist in cats. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of some risk or protective factors, including the AB blood type system phenotypes, in T. gondii infection in cats. Feline sera and surplus EDTA anticoagulated blood samples, for which AB blood group system phenotypes had been determined, were analyzed for T. gondii antibodies (ELISA, cut-off S/P% ≥ 50% and IFAT, cut-off ≥ 1:64) and DNA (nested and real-time PCR). T. gondii status and the

Canine hookworms represent some of the most globally prevalent parasitic nematodes affecting dogs and pose a significant zoonotic risk to humans, in whom they can induce cutaneous larva migrans. Infection with these parasites may lead to blood loss, anaemia, and, in severe cases, mortality-particularly in young puppies. The present study reports a confirmed case of Ancylostoma caninum infection in a 15-month-old dog in the Slovak Republic. The infected dog presented with severe, persistent diarrhoea, and haematological examination revealed a decrease in erythrocyte and haemoglobin levels, as w

Parasitic infections, particularly those caused by Haemonchus contortus (H. contortus), severely impact livestock production, with growing resistance to commercial anthelmintics posing a major challenge. Green-synthesized metallic nanoparticles using Artemisia cina (A. cina), a plant with known anthelmintic and antioxidant properties, represent a promising sustainable alternative for parasite control. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized using an aqueous extract of A. cina to evaluate their anthelmintic activity against infective larvae (L3) of H. contortus and their ef

Toxoplasma gondii, a widespread parasite, poses significant public health concerns. It infects humans and animals, with rodents serving as important intermediate hosts. The present study investigated the prevalence and genetic ITS1 diversity of T. gondii in wild rodents from Lithuania. A total of 469 rodents from eight species were captured across various regions, and DNA from neural and cardiac tissues was analyzed using nested PCR. Overall prevalence of T. gondii was 26.2% (95% CI = 22.3-30.5). The prevalence of infection varied among rodent species (0-50.0%) and across geographic locations.

Orthohantaviruses are zoonotic pathogens that cause severe diseases in humans primarily through inhalation of aerosols from rodent excreta. Recent studies suggest that ectoparasites may be potential vectors for Orthohantaviruses. This study aimed to obtain molecular evidence of Orthohantavirus in trombiculid mites collected from wild rodents. In April 2025, 4963 trombiculid mites were collected from 128 wild rodents captured in 17 regions of the Republic of Korea (ROK). Among them, 1660 mites were grouped into 204 pools by collection sites and tested for the Orthohantavirus RNA using quantitat

Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) pose a significant threat to canine health in Nigeria. Despite this, there is little data on the molecular identification of ticks and TBPs of dogs in Nigeria. This study assessed the prevalence of ticks and TBPs in Nigerian dogs, along with associated risk factors. A total of 259 dogs were enrolled in the study, from which 112 adult ticks were collected. Of these, 40 were characterized by molecular barcoding confirming Rhipicephalus sanguineus (R. sanguineus, 35/40) and Haemphysalis leachi (H. leachi, 5/40) infestations. Nucleotide sequences showed high percentage

During the first week of T. b. brucei infection, pro-inflammatory IFN-γ production drives acute anaemia by promoting red blood cell clearance by activated macrophages in concert with insufficient bone marrow compensation. The latter is followed by a partial recovery phase, which later progresses to chronic anaemia. To compensate for acute anaemia, stress-induced extramedullary erythropoiesis occurs in the spleen. However, the role of IL-10, a key anti-inflammatory cytokine in regulating stress-induced acute anaemia during African trypanosomosis (AT), remains unclear. Using both genetic and pha

Avian haemosporidians have been widely studied because they provide important insights into parasite distribution and diversity. However, most available data come from passerines, resulting in gaps regarding other bird groups, primarily due to the difficulty of sampling non-passerines in natural environments. Thus, we aimed to detect infections caused by Plasmodium spp. and Haemoproteus spp. through molecular and morphological analyses of blood samples from non-passerine birds in Midwestern Brazil. We evaluated 344 individuals from 60 species across 16 non-passerine orders. Among them, 18.89%

Root-knot nematodes, known for their broad host range and the challenges associated with their control, cause significant losses in global agricultural productivity. The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway amplifies signals through a phosphorylation cascade to regulate downstream transcription factors or effector proteins, which is essential for maintaining normal physiological functions in nematodes. This study presents a comprehensive characterization of the MAPK signaling cascade regulatory network in Meloidogyne incognita, elucidating the regulatory roles of Mi-let-60, Mi-lin-4

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a severe zoonotic disease characterized by high mortality and a pronounced systemic inflammatory response. Although Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) has been implicated in infectious and inflammatory disorders, its role in human VL remains poorly defined, and host-derived indicators that simultaneously reflect inflammatory and parasitic activity are limited. This study investigated the association between plasma PTX3 levels, parasite load, and PTX3 gene polymorphisms (rs1840680 and rs2305619) in patients with VL. An observational study was conducted between 2017 and 2021, incl

The endophytic Streptomyces sp. PRh3 (PRh3), isolated from Dongxiang wild rice (DXWR), exhibited impaired biosynthetic capacity in the laboratory. To address this defect, rifampicin-based ribosome engineering was first applied to PRh3 to generate PRh3-r55, which acquired a characteristic H473Y rifampicin-resistant mutation in rpoB to activate the production of two β-carboline alkaloids JBIR-133 and JBIR-134. Then the biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) ksl was introduced into PRh3-r55 for heterologous expression, generating PRh3-r55K. This combined approach achieved a synergistic effect, enabling
