Case of intestinal obstruction due to accidental ingestion of a silicone rubber dental impression.

Accidental ingestion is common and can even necessitate surgery. An 89-year-old man with dementia presented with abdominal distension and pain. A CT scan revealed a high-intensity object in the terminal ileum with distension of the proximal small intestine. Colonoscopy showed ileus caused by a retained foreign body (FB), which was removed via laparotomy the following day. Chemical analysis identified the material of the FB as platinum silicone rubber. Based on its material and irregular shape, the FB was determined to be a dental impression. The patient had dentures made one year prior, and co

Gossypiboma: the hidden surgical threat - delayed diagnosis and management.

Gossypiboma (retained surgical sponge) is a rare, unwanted, avoidable and embarrassing medical event that can complicate the favourable evolution of any surgery. It is a rare but serious complication seldom reported due to its medicolegal implications. Gossypiboma increases the cost of treatment, negatively affects the otherwise good prognosis of the index surgery, and also increases the patient's morbidity and mortality. It can occur after any surgery that requires the use of swabs. Intra-abdominal gossypiboma can migrate into the ileum, stomach, colon or bladder without any apparent opening i

Case Report: Suspected intestinal perforation caused by accidental ingestion of magnet.

INTRODUCTION: Children frequently swallow foreign objects, and ingesting magnets on occasion can cause major problems because they are composed of unique materials that draw to one another in the intestinal wall. As a result, there is a significant chance of intestinal wall necrosis, intestinal perforation, and fistula formation. On the basis of the history of magnet ingestion, clinical signs like nausea and vomiting, and x-ray imaging, it is easy to diagnose magnet-induced complications. However, there was no foreign body shadow in the x-ray, and some intermittent swallowing of magnets in dif

Long forgotten perfume bottle nozzle in the uterus: challenges in retrieval in a low resource setting!

Foreign body in the uterus may lead to severe complications and pose significant management dilemmas. We report a 26-year-old lady who presented with foul-smelling discharge, subfertility, and a failed attempt at foreign body removal outside. Pelvic ultrasound revealed an impacted structure in the endocervical canal while a descending pipe was visualized in the endocervical canal per speculum examination. Partial removal vaginally and surgical removal of the nozzle via laparotomy was necessary due to the size, location, and impaction of the object. Posterior uterine incision was used due to ea

Small intestinal metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma diagnosed and resected as intestinal obstruction caused by a foreign body.

Hematogenous metastases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to the small intestine are rare. In most cases, hematogenous metastasis is symptomatic, including perforation or bleeding, and the prognosis is poor. A 63-year-old man had lower right abdominal pain, and small intestinal obstruction due to chronic inflammation of the foreign body was suspected on computed tomography. Blood tests revealed elevated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). He had undergone four surgeries for HCC. Conservative treatment was administered, but there was little improvement. A segmental resection of the small intestine was per

Know the Anatomy of Your Intrauterine Device: A Case of Hormonal Sleeve Displacement Resulting in Concerns Over Foreign Body Loss.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are one of the most commonly used forms of long-term reversible contraception and are also used for treating gynaecological conditions such as dysmenorrhea, endometrial hyperplasia, and abnormal uterine bleeding. While IUDs have a high safety profile, complications may occur during insertion, use, and removal. IUD fragmentation is a rare but potential complication, in which patients may be subjected to invasive management. We describe a 52-year-old female patient who, after having her levonorgestrel IUD removed, was mistakenly believed to have IUD remnants in her ut

Abortion stick-induced unsafe abortion: a rare modern occurrence and the diagnostic and therapeutic role of hysteroscopy.

Unsafe abortion remains a critical public health issue, particularly in regions with limited access to safe and legal abortion services. This case report highlights the rare use of an abortion stick-a hazardous method involving the insertion of foreign objects into the uterus and its associated complications. A newly married woman in her 20s presented with lower abdominal pain, foul-smelling vaginal discharge and infertility following an unsafe abortion facilitated by a traditional birth attendant. Hysteroscopic evaluation revealed a 9 cm wooden stick within the uterine cavity, which was succe

Managing corneal foreign body injuries in a primary eye care setting.

Corneal foreign body removal is a common office-based procedure conducted by primary eye care practitioners globally. In Australia and New Zealand, optometry is a therapeutic profession capable of removing embedded corneal foreign bodies. In Australia, it has been estimated that ocular foreign bodies account for more than 44% of eye-related presentations to a hospital emergency department. Studies have shown that the majority of these patients can be effectively managed by the community optometrist, reducing the burden on hospital admissions. Regardless of the setting, the use of standardised ter

Regeneration of the Gastrointestinal Tract After Using a Small Intestine Submucosa Patch-A Rat Model.

Background: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a life-threatening condition characterized by necrosis of the gastrointestinal tract caused by hypoperfusion and hypoxia-induced inflammation. Surgical treatment often requires resection, with high morbidity and mortality. Intestinal tissue engineering using absorbable biomaterials represents a potential alternative. Small intestinal submucosa (SIS) is a biodegradable extracellular matrix (ECM) scaffold that may facilitate regeneration of the native tissue. Objectives: The aim of our study is to investigate the regenerative potential of SIS in a r

Plastic Corneal Foreign Body Removal From a 2-Month-Old Infant: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Infantile corneal foreign bodies (CFBs) are rare and frequently result in delayed diagnoses and treatment challenges. This report describes a case of a very young infant with a small plastic CFB that was successfully removed. CASE REPORT A 2-month-old boy was observed to have a "small dot" foreign body on his left cornea by his parents. No crying response to the CFB or other symptoms had ever been identified. Slit lamp examination revealed the presence of a small, oval, plastic foreign body in the corneal epithelial layer. This CFB was determined to be an ornament affixed to the dre

Uterine closure after cesarean delivery: surgical technique, biological rationale, and clinical implications.

Normal uterine function depends on cyclical regeneration and the capacity to sustain pregnancy. A cesarean incision represents an injury to this remarkable organ. Although the uterus possesses exceptional healing potential, cesarean delivery increases the risk of secondary infertility, pelvic pain, uterine rupture, and abnormal placentation in subsequent pregnancies. The two most important determinants of successful hysterotomy healing after cesarean delivery are the location of the incision and the surgical technique used for closure. The anatomic site of entry-whether the corpus, lower uteri

Never Brush off Abdominal Pain: A Case of a Grill Brush Bristle Causing Colonic Perforation.

Acute abdominal pain constitutes 7% to 20% of all emergency department visits. While abdominal pain encompasses a broad differential, etiologies of enteritis can be divided into 4 major categories, with infection being the most common. We present the first case of enteritis caused by sigmoid colon and possibly jejunal perforation secondary to grill brush bristle ingestion. Despite comprehensive workup for enteritis, the cause remained elusive in our case, necessitating computed tomography enterography, which revealed the foreign body. Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for fo

Retained crystal ball in pediatric gastrointestinal tract: a cautionary case report.

INTRODUCTION: Decorative crystal balls, also known as superabsorbent polymer gel beads, pose a significant hazard when ingested due to their ability to expand upon exposure to water. Diagnosing crystal ball ingestion remains challenging because of their transparency to radiation, making them difficult to visualize using X-ray imaging. Small crystal balls may not be detected in their early stages, only becoming visible once they fully swell and cause intestinal obstruction. This often results in some crystal balls remaining in the distal intestine after primary surgery aimed at removing the pro
