Conjunctival Phlyctenule and Nodular Scleritis in a Patient with Previous Herpes Simplex Virus-2 Exposure: Causative Agent or Innocent Bystander?

INTRODUCTION: Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis is an inflammatory condition arising from a type IV hypersensitivity reaction, presenting with inflamed nodules on the conjunctiva and cornea. Scleritis is a severe ocular inflammation linked to systemic diseases, potentially vision threatening, and involving immune responses similar to phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis. This case report discusses a patient with a history of herpes simplex virus (HSV)-2 infection who primarily developed phlyctenular conjunctivitis and later progressed to nodular scleritis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old female

Diagnosing Corneal Pigmentation in Small Animals.

The transparency of the cornea is critical to its role in transmitting light. Loss of corneal transparency results in visual impairment. Corneal pigmentation results from melanin accumulation in the epithelial cells of the cornea. Differential diagnosis for corneal pigmentation include corneal sequestrum, corneal foreign body, limbal melanocytoma, iris prolapse, and dermoid. These conditions must be excluded to reach a diagnosis of corneal pigmentation. A myriad of ocular surface conditions are associated with corneal pigmentation, including qualitative and quantitative tear film deficiency, a

Wessely corneal ring phenomenon: An unsolved pathophysiological dilemma.

The cornea is a densely innervated avascular tissue showing exceptional inflammatory and immune responses. The cornea is a site of lymphangiogenic and angiogenic privilege devoid of blood and lymphatic vessels that limits the entry of inflammatory cells from the adjacent and highly immunoreactive conjunctiva. Immunological and anatomical differences between the central and peripheral cornea are also necessary to sustain passive immune privilege. The lower density of antigen-presenting cells in the central cornea and the 5:1 peripheral-to-central corneal ratio of C1 are two main features confer

Yearly trends in the incidence of ocular traumas and the effects of COVID-19 pandemic: a nationwide population-based study of Korean data.

BACKGROUND: Ocular trauma can cause irreversible visual impairment, and its incidence is higher than that of other ocular diseases in young patients. Past studies on ocular trauma have been limited in terms of small sample sizes, specific age groups, or a short period of assessment. Moreover, no studies have yet investigated the effects of changes in lifestyle during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on these trends. Therefore, we aimed to determine the yearly trends in the incidence of various ocular traumas over a 10-year period (2011-2020), and to evaluate the effects of the

Toxic External Exposure Leading to Ocular Surface Injury.

The surface of the eye is directly exposed to the external environment, protected only by a thin tear film, and may therefore be damaged by contact with ambient particulate matter, liquids, aerosols, or vapors. In the workplace or home, the eye is subject to accidental or incidental exposure to cleaning products and pesticides. Organic matter may enter the eye and cause infection. Ocular surface damage can trigger a range of symptoms such as itch, discharge, hyperemia, photophobia, blurred vision, and foreign body sensation. Toxin exposure can be assessed clinically in multiple ways, including

Biomechanics of open-globe injury: a review.

Open-globe injury is a common cause of blindness clinically caused by blunt trauma, sharp injury, or shock waves, characterised by rupture of the cornea or sclera and exposure of eye contents to the environment. It causes catastrophic damage to the globe, resulting in severe visual impairment and psychological trauma to the patient. Depending on the structure of the globe, the biomechanics causing ocular rupture can vary, and trauma to different parts of the globe can cause varying degrees of eye injury. The weak parts or parts of the eyeball in contact with foreign bodies rupture when biomech

Observation and assessment of the immediate use of a silicon hydrogel contact lens after transepithelial corneal cross linking: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Transepithelial corneal crosslinking (CXL) is a novel surgical approach for the treatment of keratoconus, which is a bilateral asymmetrical ophthalmological disease accompanied by progressive corneal ectasia. Silicon hydrogel (SiH) contact lenses have been extensively used in clinical ophthalmologic medicine, as a postoperative ophthalmological intervention. However, the ideal lens application duration after transepithelial CXL remains uncertain. Here, we aimed to investigate the effects and comfort of immediate corneal contact lens use after transepithelial CXL for keratoconus. M
