Effect of Platelet-Rich Plasma on Corneal Epithelial Healing after Phototherapeutic Keratectomy: An Intraindividual Contralateral Randomized Study.

PURPOSE: To assess the effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on the healing response of the corneal epithelium in eyes undergoing phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK). METHODS: We prospectively examined 20 eyes of 10 patients undergoing bilateral PTK for granular corneal dystrophy or band keratopathy. Patients were randomly assigned to start topical administration of PRP ophthalmic suspension (PRP group) or artificial tears (control group) 4 times daily for 2 weeks. Immediately, 1, and 2 days, and 1 week after PTK, we quantitatively measured the staining area of the corneal epithelium, using sli

Comparison of Two Cases of Foveal Laceration Caused by a Mower.

We report and compare 2 cases of open globe injury with foveal damage incurred while mowing. Case 1 is a healthy 67-year-old man presenting with an intraocular metallic foreign body and eye pain in his right eye after using a mower. The foreign body perforated the cornea's inferior area and damaged the foveal centralis, leading to central scotoma and decreased visual acuity. 27G pars plana vitrectomy was performed, and the final corrected decimal visual acuity was 0.1, but the visual field was preserved, except for the central scotoma. Case 2 is a healthy 50-year-old man presenting open globe

Penetrating injury of the cornea by a barbed fish hook and its surgical management by "Cut-it out technique".

Fishing is a worldwide pastime enjoyed by millions of people. Ocular fishing injuries though uncommon may cause potentially devastating ocular trauma. We report a rare case of penetrating injury of the cornea by a barbed fish hook and its successful surgical management by "cut-it out technique". We are discussing the various techniques available for removal of fish hooks. The hook can be successfully removed with minimal trauma to ocular structures by understanding the structure of the fish hook and by employing the appropriate method of extraction.

Crystalline deposits in the cornea and various areas of the kidney as symptoms of an underlying monoclonal gammopathy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell dyscrasias (PCD) are characterized by an abnormal production of intact monoclonal immunoglobulins or parts such as heavy or light chains. In most cases, the monoclonal protein (also termed paraprotein) is produced by a clonal plasma cell population. The production of monoclonal proteins can result in deposits of various types and localization depending on the type, amount, and electrochemical properties of the paraprotein. One histopathologic presentation, albeit rare, are crystalline deposits. They can form in various organs and hence cause a wide spectrum of symptoms.

Retained Metallic Intraocular Foreign Body With Excellent Visual Outcome.

A healthy 25-year-old gentleman sustained a left eye perforating injury involving a metallic intraocular foreign body. Upon examination, his best-corrected visual acuity was 6/6 in the right eye and 1/60 in the left eye. There was a full thickness cornea-scleral laceration wound with uveal tissue prolapse at 7 o'clock. The pupil was peaked inferonasally. The anterior chamber was deep with cells grade 4+ and a hyphema level. The posterior segment could not be visualized due to a vitreous haemorrhage. The computed tomography scan revealed a high-density foreign body embedded in the posterior wal

Reconstruction of Lagophthalmos of Upper Eyelid With a Subcutaneous Pedicled Propeller Flap.

An 11-year-old boy presented with lagophthalmos of the left upper eyelid after traumatic scar contracture. Chronic eyelid hypophasis could produce dryness, foreign body sensation, cornea exposure. To reconstruct the upper eyelid defects after scar release represented a significant challenge in terms of recreating functional eyelids. The authors applied the orbital subcutaneous pedicled propeller flap for one-stage reconstruction of the lagophthalmos. Four weeks after surgery, the patient had functional eyelid with no ectropion, cornea exposure or conjunctivitis and the appearance of eyelid was

Superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis: a comprehensive review.

Superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis (SLK) is characterized by chronic inflammation of the superior limbus and superior bulbar and tarsal conjunctivae. Patients also often have fine punctate staining of the limbus and adjacent area, superior limbic proliferation seen as thickening of the limbal epithelium and surrounding conjunctiva, and occasionally filaments at the superior limbus and upper cornea. SLK frequently presents with ocular irritation, foreign body sensation, and photophobia. SLK can be associated with other ocular and non-ocular conditions, such as thyroid disease. Although the pa
