Enhanced fabrication of dual-compartment artificial cornea C-Clear via precision moulding and continuous polymerisation: biocompatibility and functional efficacy in rabbit model.

This study introduces C-Clear, a novel artificial cornea based on a HEMA/MMA-based copolymer, developed through continuous polymerisation and moulding. C-Clear comprises a transparent optical core and porous support skirt, specifically designed to enhance tissue integration and minimise inflammatory responses. In vitro evaluations demonstrated excellent biocompatibility, characterised by high levels of cell adhesion and proliferation, while in vivo assessments using a rat subcutaneous model confirmed successful integration and biocompatibility. Furthermore, a 24-week corneal implantation study

Janus silk-based patch with temporary adhesion for inflammatory mediators removal in corneal alkali burn treatment.

Corneal alkali burns cause persistent inflammation, leading to corneal vascularization and fibrosis, which severely impair vision. Here, we developed a temporary adhesive and detachable Janus silk-based patch to capture and remove inflammatory mediators from the ocular surface. The lower silk layer of the Janus patch incorporates of polyamidoamine and heparin, offering adsorption capacity for inflammatory mediators on the ocular surface. The upper hyaluronan layer imparts lubrication, alleviating foreign-body sensation and reducing shear stress from blinking. The integration of the silk and hy

Unusual case of an intraocular tooth as a foreign body after a car accident.

PURPOSE: We report a case of a 56-year-old man who sustained open-globe ocular trauma in his left eye during a vehicular accident, resulting in the identification and surgical removal of intraocular tooth fragments. OBSERVATIONS: The corneal wound was closed during initial surgery. An intraocular foreign body was not detected on mode B echography, complicating the diagnostic process. During a subsequent surgery, a vitrectomy was performed, leading to the discovery and removal of an intraocular tooth fragment. Two weeks postoperatively, the patient's best-corrected visual acuity was 20/800. C

Etiological characteristics of 3,691 cases of microbial keratitis: an 8-year longitudinal study.

The etiological spectrum of microbial keratitis exhibits significant regional variability. However, existing domestic and international resistance monitoring systems do not adequately address the specific needs of clinical practice. We analyzed a cohort of 3,691 patients diagnosed with microbial keratitis in the southern region of Zhejiang Province, China between 2016 and 2023. The patients' ages ranged from 2 to 93 years (979 men and 403 women). The microbial culture positivity rate is relatively low (38.72%). Trauma and foreign body entry emerged as significant risk factors. Mixed infections

Unintended Presence of Human Cilium in the Anterior Chamber After Phacoemulsification: A Report of Two Cases and Literature Review.

Cataract surgery has consistently demonstrated safety and efficacy in restoring vision through the removal of visually-significant cataracts. Advances in surgical techniques and technology have led to excellent visual outcomes and minimal complications. Despite this, rare complications can occur, such as the introduction of intraocular foreign bodies, including cilia. Although extremely uncommon, the presence of cilia in the eye post intraocular surgery poses potential risks, including infection and inflammation. This study presents two distinct cases of intraocular cilia found in the anterior

Inclusion cysts after manual small incision cataract surgery: insights into presentation, management and outcomes.

We report a series of three patients who developed conjunctival inclusion cysts following manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS). Presenting symptoms included foreign body sensation and ocular irritation, sometimes mistaken for filtering blebs. Diagnosis was confirmed through slit-lamp examination, ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). Surgical management varied: two cases underwent complete cyst excision with fluid aspiration, while the third case was managed by aspiration alone. Histopathology consistently confirmed epithelial incl

Thermoplastic silk-plasticizer membranes for biodegradable artificial corneal endothelium.

Corneal endothelial dysfunction (CED) induces stromal edema through aqueous influx, disrupting collagen organization and causing corneal opacity, with chronic cases progressing to fibrosis. As a major cause of corneal blindness, CED currently requires corneal transplantation for treatment. However, the scarcity of human donors necessitates the urgent development of artificial corneal endothelial transplant materials. Previously reported non-biodegradable polymer materials suffer from inadequate adhesion and poor water barrier efficiency, with long-term implantation potentially causing foreign-

Lash Lamination as a Nonsurgical Approach to Lash Ptosis.

The authors report a case of nonsurgical management of lash ptosis using eyelash lamination. A 36-year-old male presented with persistent foreign body sensation and visual obscuration. Slit lamp examination revealed elongated, ptotic upper eyelashes that rested on the cornea and extended into the pupillary axis. After thorough consultation, the patient declined surgical correction and instead elected to undergo a semipermanent eyelash lamination procedure, which relies on thioglycolic acid and polyacrylamide. This chemical treatment lifted and reshaped the lashes, which redirected them away fr

Managing corneal foreign body injuries in a primary eye care setting.

Corneal foreign body removal is a common office-based procedure conducted by primary eye care practitioners globally. In Australia and New Zealand, optometry is a therapeutic profession capable of removing embedded corneal foreign bodies. In Australia, it has been estimated that ocular foreign bodies account for more than 44% of eye-related presentations to a hospital emergency department. Studies have shown that the majority of these patients can be effectively managed by the community optometrist, reducing the burden on hospital admissions. Regardless of the setting, the use of standardised ter

Plastic Corneal Foreign Body Removal From a 2-Month-Old Infant: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Infantile corneal foreign bodies (CFBs) are rare and frequently result in delayed diagnoses and treatment challenges. This report describes a case of a very young infant with a small plastic CFB that was successfully removed. CASE REPORT A 2-month-old boy was observed to have a "small dot" foreign body on his left cornea by his parents. No crying response to the CFB or other symptoms had ever been identified. Slit lamp examination revealed the presence of a small, oval, plastic foreign body in the corneal epithelial layer. This CFB was determined to be an ornament affixed to the dre
