Filarial Worm Infestation of the Nasolacrimal Duct: A Rare Orbital Presentation.

Filarial infestation of the nasolacrimal duct is exceptionally rare and often misdiagnosed as benign lacrimal pathology. We present a 12-year-old boy with progressive medial canthal swelling initially suspected to be a dermoid cyst or inflammatory lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-defined enhancing lesion at the nasolacrimal duct with preseptal edema. Histopathology demonstrated a parasite with a thick eosinophilic cuticular wall and inflammatory infiltrate rich in eosinophils and foreign-body giant cells, consistent with filarial infestation, possibly Onchocerca species. Plastic Corneal Foreign Body Removal From a 2-Month-Old Infant: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Infantile corneal foreign bodies (CFBs) are rare and frequently result in delayed diagnoses and treatment challenges. This report describes a case of a very young infant with a small plastic CFB that was successfully removed. CASE REPORT A 2-month-old boy was observed to have a "small dot" foreign body on his left cornea by his parents. No crying response to the CFB or other symptoms had ever been identified. Slit lamp examination revealed the presence of a small, oval, plastic foreign body in the corneal epithelial layer. This CFB was determined to be an ornament affixed to the dre

Magnetic removal of fragmented Crawford hook during nasolacrimal duct probing.

We present the case of a 13-month-old girl with Down syndrome who underwent probing to alleviate nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO). During the procedure, a distal portion of the deployed Crawford hook fragmented and became lodged in the right nasopharynx. Traditional intraoperative methods of visualization were unsuccessful; however, extraction of the fragment was achieved by using a nasogastric bridle magnet. This case demonstrates a novel method of metallic foreign body removal, which may be useful when exact location cannot be determined.

Pilomatrixoma in a Young Adult With Epiphora Mimicking Dacryocystitis.

Pilomatrixoma is a rare benign tumor originating from hair follicle matrix. It is commonly misdiagnosed clinically. The authors present an unusual case of a Pilomatrixoma in a young adult with epiphora mimicking dacryocystitis. An 18-year-old female presented with right eye tearing and nodular mass (12 mm × 10 mm) localized under the medial canthal tendon, resembling acute dacryocystitis for 2 months. Following 1-week oral antibiotic treatment, nasolacrimal duct obstruction was detected with lacrimal irrigation. On palpation, the mass was nontender, painless, reddish in color, and hard in cons

"Fly in the eye: Oestrus ovis" - a case report and a review from India.

Ophthalmomyiasis externa is the most common manifestation of Oestrus ovis (sheep nasal botfly) in humans. Several cases have been reported from various regions of India with the first case reported by Elliot in 1910. Here, we report such a case from North India along with the review of literature from India of the last fifteen years. A farmer presented to us with unilateral ocular symptoms of redness, foreign body sensation and severe watering in left eye who was misdiagnosed as acute conjunctivitis elsewhere. On slit lamp examination, multiple translucent larvae were found in his conjunctival

Genetically predicted asthma and the risk of abnormal spermatozoa.

BACKGROUND: Several previous animal and human studies have found a strong association between asthma and spermatozoa quality, but whether these associations are causal or due to bias remains to be elucidated. METHODS: We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to assess the causal effect of genetically predicted asthma on the risk of abnormal spermatozoa. Asthma, childhood-onset asthma (COA), and adult-onset asthma (AOA) (sample sizes ranging from 327,670 to 408,442) were included as the exposures. Genetic information for abnormal spermatozoa was obtained from a genome-wi

B-Cell Lymphoma Arising From a Nasal Implant: A Brief Clinical Study.

Continuous exposure to foreign substances initiates a sustained inflammatory reaction in the body, and subsequent chronic inflammation is recognized as one of the causes of lymphoma. Most lymphomas caused by foreign bodies are composed of 2 major phenotypes. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma arising from metallic prosthesis, also called metallic implant-associated lymphoma and T-cell phenotype anaplastic large cell lymphoma, commonly associated with breast implants. Augmentation rhinoplasty is often performed to improve the esthetics of the nasal dorsum and various synthetic materials have been us

Boraginaceae plant fragment as a foreign body in the lacrimal duct: Multidisciplinary diagnosis.

Foreign bodies in the lacrimal drainage system pose a substantial challenge in clinical practice due to their potential morbidity and diverse origins. Many foreign bodies are inorganic; however, organic foreign bodies, although uncommon, present diagnostic challenges. We present the case of a 57-year-old woman who had epiphora in her right eye. Patient's physical examination suggested an obstruction in the nasolacrimal duct. An external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) was scheduled. The surgery uncovered a polyp-like intrasaccal structure, which was subsequently identified as an organic foreign bo

Large Number of Eyelashes in the Lacrimal Sac Found by Dacryoendoscopy: A Case Report.

Foreign objects sometimes enter the lacrimal sac. Here, we report the case of a patient with many comb-shaped eyelashes in the lacrimal sac and discuss the potential of using dacryoendoscopy to detect and remove foreign bodies from the lacrimal apparatus. A 65-year-old woman with a teary eye underwent dacryoendoscopy. There was no abnormality in the canaliculi. The internal ostium was blocked by a large number of black, comb-shaped eyelashes. Numerous bunched eyelashes covered with small white debris were found in the upper part of the lacrimal sac. No eyelash bundles were present from the low

Demodex Species and Culturable Microorganism Co-Infestations in Patients with Blepharitis.

We aimed to determine the prevalence of Demodex spp. and bacterial infection in patients with blepharitis and also to investigate the relationship between culturable microorganisms and Demodex spp. in this study. The study included patients diagnosed with blepharitis (n = 128) and volunteers without ocular problems (n = 113). Eyelash sampling was performed by epilating eight lashes, which were then tested for Demodex spp. using a light microscope. The examination consisted of assessing the patient's vision with and without ocular correction and tonus in both eyes and a careful examination of t

Intraorbital Wooden Foreign Body in a Soldier.

The authors report a case of an intraorbital wooden foreign body that was misinterpreted as a radiolucent area of retained air on a computed tomography (CT) scan. A 20-year-old soldier presented to an outpatient clinic following an impingement with a bough while cutting down a tree. He had a 1-cm-deep laceration on the inner canthal area of his right eye. A military surgeon explored the wound and suspected a foreign body, but could not find or extract anything. Thereafter, the wound was sutured and the patient was transferred. An examination revealed an acutely ill-looking man with distressing
